Root Google Voice Help

Hello all.

I just signed up for google voice. It has apparently made some changes to my texting capabilities.

Do I always have to have my data connection enabled to be able to send text messages now? Can I send messages through the default app if needed?

Incoming messages pop up in both the google voice and messaging app. Can I pick one or the other?

From your PC log into Google and go to Voice. In settings go to Phones. Here you can select whether or not to receive messages via Voice.

On the phone, open Voice and in the settings you can select to either receive messages only in Voice or both apps.

Yes, you can send texts with the default app.

I'm pretty sure you'll need access to data to send or receive texts via Voice.

I had to disable it for now until I have some more time to play with it.

All messages that I tried to send via Messaging app would fail to get anywhere. I never got any error messages or anything. With google voice disabled, now my text messages are sending again.

That's odd.

I use them both without any problems.

Under Settings, Sync and Notifications, Receive text messages, I have "Also via the messaging app" selected, and online, my phone is selected to receive texts.

And if it matters, I think that when I set up Voice on my phone I selected to always use Voice for outgoing calls. Keep in mind that Voice uses land lines for outgoing calls so if you have a limited amount of "non-cellular" minutes those calls will count against that limit. When you call out, your phone calls a Google service center in your area to a non-cellular phone and that connects you to whoever you're calling. So according to your carrier, no matter who you call, you're making a call to a non-cellular phone.

So last week I downloaded Google Voice to try it out since I can't get Sprint VVM to work on my 3.5 ROM. I used the Sprint integration setup so that my Sprint phone number would be my Google Voice number.

Everything seemed to work well as far as voicemails coming through. The only feature I didn't care for was that my texts came through the Google Voice app as well my stock app, but that was not a huge deal.

So after a week of reading different reviews on Google Voice and the nightmares that people had with disabling it and going back to the regular Sprint voicemail I decided that I would disable it and try for myself to see if the horror stories were true.

I disabled my Sprint phone number on Google Voice through the online option, I then place a call from another line to my phone, left a voicemail and sent a text and all came through just fine. I did have to re-set up my Sprint voicemail account as if it was the first time I used it...in fact when calling my voicemail for the first time after disabling Google Voice I got the "Sprint first time voicemail message". I also get the annoying text from 9016 telling me I have a voicemail and another from 9016 with a number to dial that tells you about continuing to receive voicemails on your SMS voicemail enabled phone.

So my question is am I missing something about all the horror stories of Google Voice hijacking your Sprint number when using the integration option or have I just not experienced any issues yet and are they yet to come?

***UPDATE***

I just wanted to make a note that when I logged into my Sprint online account I noticed that there were two separate changes to my plan/service, one on the 23rd and one on the 28th. I can confirm after a call to Sprint costumer service that those were the enabling and disabling dates of Google Voice, so all must have worked correctly for this to even be noted on my account.

I was owndering if you guys could help me with the optimal setup as I will be travelling to Europe for a few weeks.

Here is what I currently have:

Phone setup for normal Sprint Voicemail and SMS
Google Voice app on my phone
GV using my primary gmail account to use my business number

I also have another GV account through my secondary gmail address. This number is rarely if never used.

GrooveIp app

What I would like to accomplish while on wifi in Europe is this:

I sign into GV and GrooveIp with my secondary GV account.
Forward calls and SMS from my primary Sprint number to my secondary GV number.
Have my primary GV acount just go to its GV voicemail.

So, frowarding calls to GrooveIp I figured out. In order to get the SMS feature, does Sprint voicemail integration help to achieve this?

Any help is greatly appreciated !

Hello all.

Data connection is a must as you won't receive text messages. I use GV for my phone so I can receive text messages on my Transformer Prime.

You can send text messages through the stock messaging app but since GV doesn't allow mms messages yet, this is the only time I use the stock messaging app.

Yes, you can pick one or the other
