Google Voice issues

I'm trying to setup GV for voicemail and am having some problems. During the process it tells me to dial *289192851466 in order to setup the voicemail. When I do, I hear two beeps and then it hangs up... everytime. Also, whenever I hit back to exit GV, the inbox reloads again. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

That's all I got too but it works after the beeps. Have you tried to call your self to test it? I was unimpressed with the useful feedback, but it did work.

Went through the same thing today. Tried a few times, each call lasted 3 seconds. I thought, hey maybe it actually worked, and was then able to set up GV.

As they both mentioned above, that is the exact way to set the voicemail up, once you get the 2 tones your phone is transferred. now if you want to set a voicemail up you go on your PC and login into GV and then go to V/Mail and set up a new message, it will then call your cell number and allow you to create a new message from your phone, then save and you are good to go. Once you have all that set up, then create a widget on your screen the G/voice widget and set to the inbox one and then when you get a message you will see them there and listen to them from there, thus never using your minutes. Now one more thing, you can go into your settings once your logged in to your account, you can have it send you a text message once you have a V/Mail or have it send you an email, your choice. If ever you want to de-activate G/Voice you simply do *38 and you will hear 2 beeps again and your V/mail is deactivated.

Has anyone tried porting their real phone number to Google Voice yet? Sprint is allowing that now without much hassle.

I was sort of wondering what the pros and cons of that might be. I kind of like having my Google Voice number to hide behind when I hand it out to less familiar people for voice calls and text messaging. I suppose I could have my real phone number as a Google Voice number as well as the Google Voice number I use now. My other concern was what would happen if you ever wanted to switch carriers after your real phone number had been ported to Google Voice.
