Google Voice News

I'm waiting to send videos and voice notes to other hangouts users. It's still tied to Google+ as well, so I disabled it again.

Here's that updated APK, BTW: APK Download: Google introduces free voice calls from Hangouts

I'm still waiting on the GV integration (the server-side change that apparently started trickling out), but I'm able to make and receive VoIP calls in the Hangouts app!
I've never done this before, installed any APKs. What happen when the Play Store version comes after I install the APK? Will it update the apk or do I need to remove it?

Thnx.

This APK is cryptographically signed by Google, so it will behave exactly as if had installed it from the Play Store. It will be able to update just fine whenever another update gets pushed. :)

They need to make it able to send pictures without Google+.

They are literally avoiding making it a decent MESSAGING client and focusing too much on making it Skype 2.0...

It already can, by attaching pictures to an SMS (which becomes MMS) message.

Google Voice cannot send MMS to Verizon or AT&T. I tried it

For Cellular, Hangouts is useless to a lot of people as an MMS client due to its very limited support for multimedia transfer abilities. You can on attach photo and location, and record (not attach) video.

Stock Messaging on (for example) my Note 3 can Take/Record and Attach Photos, Videos, Voice Notes, Location, Music Files, Contacts, and Calendar Events.

That's a sizeable disparity in functionality. Enough to ruled it out in many cases.

Can't you just use Skype. You can sign up for unlimited minutes for about $3 a month, or pre-pay .23 cents a minute just to augment your 100 minute allotment. Is there anything stopping you from doing that? Doesn't give you a number and help you in receiving calls I know, but for outgoing, it would be fine. Yes?

I just got viber and love it.
