Google Wallet apparently announced/launching today

With a maximum transaction limit of £15 I don't see it really making phones more valuable than they already are!
 
Its an interesting thought, but tbh the 1st thing that comes to mind when I think about it is security. I would want to highly research how secure it is, esp concerning lost and stolen phones.
 
Today I use my phone to pay for parking and internet banking.
Tomorrow I can see it being used for shopping. :)

It's just as easy for someone behind a counter to lift your credit card details when you make a transaction. Even easier for them to be stolen when you check into a hotel, or when you use paypal.

People don't seem to realise just how easily credit card details can be had.

This makes it more convenient, but doesn't make it any easier to obtain the card details.

There are some very smart crooks out there.

This is a new payment mechanism, and it's rightly so that people are concerned about the vulnerabilities and learning how to protect against theft.

I look forward to learning more about it myself, and seeing if it's a technology I can trust.

The stock market crash of 1929, the savings and loan debacle in the 80's, the crash of the technology sector, the real-estate crash, every large scale problem with the stock market since the beginning of the stock market, fools buying stock on margin back in the day, the Daffodil incident, the Bernie Madoffs and variants, every major financial problem we have suffered through, every site that has every been hacked where credit info is stolen, widespread fraud that cost thousands of people millions, every company that looses CC info that first boasts about their security and later apologizes for what they say will never happen does indeed happen, and Justin Bieber all have one thing in common: we are told that we are protected after it happens and it won't happen again because we changed the law and are now protected.

But it does happen, again and again and we are told it will never happen again, until it does.

I think the system just introduced will be safe for most users. That said, you should ask yourself if it does happen, can you quickly recover?

I use Visa and Am-Ex gift cards on-line and I max them out in one or two quick transactions. In my view, this is sensible because it further protects me from what I know can happen. I simply assume it can happen so I avoid it. I will never use a CC or debit card on-line.

I already see the headlines in my head and I hear the apologies from those in charge of Google Wallet.

Exactly. Most of the average people, however, are pretty dumb. I hate to say it, but it's true.

I work in Credit Card Fraud. 90% of the scams are pretty elaborate and well thought out, easy to execute and generally very hard to trace.

Honestly, it doesn't seem to me any less secure than carrying your wallet around. If I stole your wallet, I'd have your DL and your credit cards vs if I stole your NFC enabled phone, I'd have to have a pass code to unlock it and I'd need a pass code to use the payment stuff. Plus, you can't remotely wipe your wallet once I get it. You can wipe your phone. I can wipe mine just by sending an SMS to it.
 
That's the social engineering type fraudster - not your average jerk looking for a fast sale at a pawn shop. If said jerk thinks your phone is more valuable, then it is, to him.


I also don't like the idea of being bothered by coupons and other crap at checkout.
Right now, you would have to enable that, but who is to say that it won't become routine if your phone detects it? If marketers want to send info, then they can damn well subsidize the phone or give me a total opt-out option.
