Help Got 4.3 update, should I install?

I'm on 3 UK, wondered if I should install or not? Are there things this update removes, or is it all improvements other than bugs?

That is a decision you will have to make, depends on who you talk to, but keep this in mind, if you're not in a rush, don't pull the trigger for a few days until you have had time to assimilate the pros and cons first from others, then you can make a decision. Once you install 4.3 then you have Knox installed and there is not going back without repercussions.

I don't have this device anymore, but I am sure others will weigh in and give you something to think about. You can always root your device, and install a 4.3 stock base ROM without having Knox, so all depends on what you want and need.

This is the most important point in Donb's post. It's going to be your decision and an important one. If you plan on rooting, don't take the OTA.

If you do decide to take the OTA, it is recommended to do a factory reset immediately before or immediately after installing the update. It's a PITA but it will be better off in the long run.

I'm rooted and avoided Knox altogether. If you never intend to root or rom, it's no a big deal. Keep in mind this phone is still up for 4.4, which according to rumors is very close to release.

There's plenty of 4.3 reviews/threads here as it's been out or quite a while. For me? It didn't add all that much. Basically, the biggest difference I see is a rearranging of the settings menu's. I don't use or have need of all the air gesture stuff and use Nova launcher so the Samsung added stuff means little to me (also why my next phone will almost assuredly be a Nexus). Also keep in mind that I've been rooted since day one and have always used theme'd roms. On the rom side, the dev community is much reduced and the selection of 4.3 roms is relatively small. I've considered going back to 4.1.2 many times for its rock solid stability.

There are pre-rooted stock 4.3 roms w/o Knox and w/o a locked bootloader that you can easily flash to get all the good things about 4.3 w/o being locked in.

Thanks guys.

I'm not rooted and don't plan to be.

What is Knox?

I've been intending on flashing anyway as the phone has been a bit laggy lately, so this could be a good excuse to do so.

Is anything removed from 4.1.2 and 4.3?

What's the Samsung stuff? Or do you mean page buddy etc? I use Nova too.

I saw some reviews of 4.3 and the subtle improvements seem nice, like the auto complete on the dialler

IMO it's worth it just for the fstrim (file system speedup) although there are apps for rooted users that do this..

I'm on Three UK same as the OP and took the 4.3 update last week:

-Phone is a bit laggier.
-Home button not as responsive, sometimes needing a second press
-WiFi complaining that the connection isn't stable. Performing a cache clear may or may not have fixed this. Looks like it has so far.
+Email is better with a better colour scheme.

In short, this update is a crock of shit. Stick with 4.1.2.

Note also that after the install I performed a full hard reset in order to give this phone every opportunity to perform at its best but it's worse basically.

Hmm, so how do I tell my phone I don't want the update? It keeps popping up asking me to install and I defer it by 3 hours, is there a way to make that popup go away?

Sounds like it already downloaded to your phone and is just waiting for you to say yes to installation.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if you root, you could get a custom ROM w/4.3 and alot better ROM than the stock OTA. :D

Also, if you root, you can turn off these types of annoying notifications.

Really have no interest in rooting tbh.

Yeah it downloaded by itself, so I have no choice but to install it now?

No you don't have to install it but you'll be seeing those annoying notifications.

Someone else can chime in and see if it can be removed or if the notifications can be stopped. I don't take OTAs and don't deal with them at all. It's been 4 years since I took an OTA and that was an HTC EVO so I couldn't tell you what to do next.

OK, update:

After switching off the s-voice option "double tap home button to activate s-voice" and clearing the cache and switching to Nova Launcher everything is performing much more nicely. I'm currently "not unhappy" that I upgraded and won't be making any efforts to downgrade. In short, yeah, go for it.

I hope you removed all widgets from your screens BEFORE using Nova or you'll have stuff running in the background that could cause slow-downs and lag. :D

I never knew that! Nova says to clear launchers from the recent tasks list, so are they actually running?

Interestingly I keep seeing clock widgets in the wakelock detector list, even though I'm not using them. Anyone encountered them?

I've still not installed 4.3. Thinking of doing it today. Are apps backed up when we do backups?

Depends on what "do backups" means. :D

Your apps will reinstall if you factory reset, but if you're just installing an upgrade, you should have to do anything.* Of course if you have issues after an upgrade, factory reset is what's recommended.

If you have an app that does backups, you should specify what app that is.

* assuming you have a checkbox under settings... backup & reset... backup my settings to Google. (Sorry, don't have a stock phone so can't tell you exact terminology.)

Did you remove all widgets from your screens while running the stock launcher like I suggested? :D Maybe there's a clock widget there.

I hadn't but did because of what you said, but they're still in the list. Only One More Clock was being used anyway, but others were in the battery drain list

Today or on 4/15? If today, did you reboot?

You could go into settings... apps and force stop, clear data, possibly uninstall (unless they're pre-installed bloat). If they're pre-installed, uninstalling them just removes the updates, leaving the original app, which will then show up as an update in Play Store. This is one big reason many of us root our devices or install custom roms.

It's been since a reboot.

I think I'll install the update today after a kies backup. Worst case I'll do a reset because the phone isn't optimum right now anyway.

Well I've installed it, about an hour ago, and so far am really liking it. There aren't the same features as listed online though like auto complete in the dialer, but I do really like the new gallery and settings. Performance isn't any worse.

One thing I'm a bit peeved with, unrelated to the update, is Dropbox syncing with the gallery. About a month ago it was working great where photos uploaded to Dropbox, but then I did something by linking the phone and account and now all my Dropbox albums sync to the gallery and it says this can be stopped by turning off the upload. Is there a way to have the upload without the Dropbox files being on the phone?
