Got my NFC tags!

So I bought 5 Samsung NFC tectiles- yes I know there are cheaper ones. I used NFC task launcher and it works fine. I got it to try it out and the one feature I can think this could be useful is when I turn on wifi/turn off data and vice versa. It's a pain to do that all the time. I try to stay off the mobile data when I can.

So far I used two tags already:
Home tag- it turns off the mobile data, enables wifi, and turns up the volume on the ringer (sometimes I forget I have the phone on silent when I'm working).

Work tag- it turns off the wifi, turns on mobile data. I peeled this off and put it onto a old business card and put it in my wallet so that the tag is on the outer most money sleeve. So now when I go to work, all I have to do is swipe the phone across my wallet and presto!

NFC at this point, especially on Verizon is a fun feature. But it is pretty cool.

What would be really cool is if could use my nfc phone to act as my rfid id for work.

I just mine today also. How do I actually program them? Speak slowly I'm a natural .... I need and idiot's guide; step by step.

Not to be mean or anything, but I already do that with an app called llama. hehe
Im sure NFC has a lot more features, if you find them I will be glad to hear them, because I also want to buy me some :)

I'm using NFC Task Launcher, or I should say I will be, when mine get here. But I've already set up 5 tags so I'm ready to program them when they arrive. Google some NFC videos, they have simple clear instructions for programming and using.

Thats what I use for mine

i have one setup in the cradle in my jeep so that it turns on GPS and bluetooth, and one at home on my desk so it turns it off.

That is so cool, I may be going overkill, but I set up 5 so far:

I'll have two in my truck - one in the cradle to do what yours does, and another on the door out of the way for when I get out to reverse most of those settings. (I know one could be set up as a "switch", but I'd rather not worry if one setting gets out of sync with the others, then the switch won't work as I want).

One by the front door for when I get home to set wifi, screen timeout, etc.

Another on the night stand for alarm clock/do not disturb mode at beddy bye time.

The last one will be in the cradle on my road bicycle, to switch on my training apps, screen timeouts, and play list (I don't ride with earbuds, don't worry - with the extended battery, 2 hour rides are nothing)

If all this works, I'll be having kittens!:D

Thanks all. I have the NFC Task Launcher and I notice there is no provision for GPS which I need. Any suggestions?

GPS is really something you can leave on. Its not actively tracking your location or using battery if its not being used by an app like maps

When you are putting the tasks together for a new tag, and you select "Add action", then select "Settings", then under Wifi, Bluetooth, & Connections - there is GPS On/Off...is that what you are looking for?

Well, I followedd the video which seemed simple enough and got nowhere. Did it exactly, step by step; but what happened was a request to connect to internet which is not was programed.

Got my 5 tags in today - this is the coolest feature yet!

Only mistake I made was sticking them too soon before really getting them in the perfect locations.

I put one on the casing around the front door, but up high so the Mrs. wouldn't really notice - works great but kind of awkward to reach up like I have to.

Same with the car dock - it's just a hair too far away to activate by merely placing the phone in it, have to wave it closer when first getting in the truck. The other one in is in the plastic door jamb to reset it for not being in a vehicle mode - perfect.

But the bicycle and nightstand nfc's are perfect - especially the bike - it turns off wifi and notifications, dims and sets the display timeout, locks the screen orientation, starts the gps exercise app, and finally pulls up my music playlist and sets the volume - all in about 10 seconds vs. a couple minutes at least before a ride.

EDIT: Only pisser was my extended batteries aren't NFC - I didn't know it was done that way until now

It's working well for me, if you want to post each task you want the NFC to do, we might be able to identify if an app is making the internet request. It also can (or not, just depends) matter what order the tasks are in - I had to rearrange the order of tasks on one so they could all be accomplished without "stepping" on one another.

I'm loving the NFC tags. I have one at my desk at home, desk at work, car and next to my bed.
My favorite is the one before I go to bed:
Turn off wifi,
Turn off bluetooth,
Turn on silent mode,
Turn off vibrate,
Set Music volume to 45%
Lower brightness to 20%
Update Facebook status to "sleeping"
Turn on Alarm for 7:30
Launch Podkicker Pro and play.

Coming from iPhones for the last 4 years scanning this tag at night never fails to make me smile.

Is it possible to do something like, if in contact with the tag then do [this] and when not in contact don't do [this]?

I don't think so. Can you give a more specific example of what exactly you are trying to do?

From time to time, if mine is in the bicycle mount, it will re-read the tag once in a while - but that is an anomaly, not an actual intended feature.

Normally they act as a switch - your phone "reads" the tag and performs the assigned tasks, then ignores the tag after that. I have two in my truck - for when I get in, and when I get out - to allow 2 separate scenarios that fit my location needs best.

I believe there is a location-based app that can perform certain tasks if in a certain location - like work, home, or gym - but not from room to room in your house. Not sure though.

Hmm I guess I was thinking like if it was attached to the inside of your case, so while your case was on it would be set to something. Like I only put a case on my phone when I go to class because it's in my bookbag getting jumbled around. Not practical I guess, just curious of the capabilities.

Something like Tasker wouldn't really work unless I set it for every class location. My classes are at certain times, but I don't always go, or get out early. Or if I went to the library after class..ect

You can set tags up as "switches". So if you had it on the case, and the tag was set to "turn wifi on/off" - then when you put the case on, it would turn wifi on or off, whichever it isn't at the time. When you take it off, just distance the phone from the case, swipe it past it briefly, and the tag would tell it to reverse the state of the app (IE turn the wifi back on or off)

Did that make any sense??? :-)

Yeah for sure! I get the switching mechanism, but I think it wouldn't work out to have the phone in constant contact with a switch because it would probably just switch back and forth constantly (I assume) from connecting and then reconnecting. So I guess that isn't a good use for a tag :)
