I took the chance of the ota and have root!

-used the odin thread to flash back to stock 100% including recovery
-downloaded the update zip (interdpth) renamed it to update.zip
-installed it in stock recovery

-used the odin thread to install cwm recovery(unplug and pull battery as soon as it turns off)
-booted into cwm recovery and installed a superuser zip(http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip)

-rebooted and have root

using a root explorer do the following
find and delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install_recovery.sh

rebot and reodin the cwm recovery image
you have custom recovery

i could not get the volup and power to boot the recovery so i downloaded a reboot recovery app from the market

I also just noticed it reboots back to the system after the 2 min

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!! It works :):):):):):):):)..I just flashed the superuser zip with cmw .now I have 2.3.6 with root yess!!!!!!!

If you have cwm go into backup and restore and backup then post the folder it makes zipped up. To make sure people don't get all your phone numbers and account info you should factory reset first but then you may need to repeat part or all of this process..

Which means you're gonna have to keep a copy of whatever root explorer you are using on your sd card so you can install it without having to sign in to google playstore. If you want to copy it from your phone to sd card you can find it in /data/app.

Awsome. Now that you are root go look for a file called install_recovery.sh and delete it. That's what is preventing us from getting permenant cwm.

Thanks for the outline of the steps. I was able to do this on my Sprint Ultra.

Steps I did different:

- copied and renamed stock update from /cache to sdcard before starting.

- stock sprint odin files wouldn't work in odin for me. Had to extract the images from those files and dd them to the phone. The cwm odin file worked fine in odin.

- after you flash the root zip in cwm you can use su in adb right away without rebooting so you can delete those 2 files and avoid having to odin cwm a 2nd time.
