I want to repartition my SD card from ext3 to ext4.
Been a long time since I did this originally, so have reviewed the guides, but am not clear on the process for just making a change? Can I just change the ext? or am I starting over from scratch, as if nothing had been done previously?

I recommend 4Ext instead. You can convert an existing partition from say EXT3 to EXT4. Will save your existing FAT32 data. I've noticed that EXT4 is more data efficient in terms of usage of storage space.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought I still needed to use gparted to convert my ext3 to ext4. OK, will use 4ext recovery to convert. I wish it had a users manual tho, lol. It seems to have a lot more options in it than clockworkmod recovery..
Once converted to ext4, I am thinking I should change the hboot tables? Is there much advantage to this, for someone like me? For example, mildwild rom suggests the CM7R2 hboot. From what I gather, there will be less 'wasted' space since the /system part will be smaller, therefore allocating that extra space to /data. An extra 100mb or so..
And the new hboot tables are flashable zips? That still how it will work with 4ext recovery, or is there an option in there to just enter the values and voila? lol.

There are 2 ways of changing hboot.

The first is to use fastboot to flash a new hboot. This is described in the adb and fastboot faq and/or root memory faq (worth reading both anyway ). It requires setting up fastboot on your computer, but once that is done is very simple. There are GUIs that use this (android flasher or something like that) but the command line is more versatile IMO.

The second is that the alpharev hboots can be downloaded as PB99IMG.zip files. To use these, copy the file to your sd card (top directory), rename to PB99IMG.zip (case sensitive), boot into hboot and confirm that you want to apply the update.

Most of the old hands here will fastboot flash. That's also the only way for the dGB hboots.

Do read the instructions in the root memory faq and alpharev.nl. There are a few other things you need to do, especially take a nandroid before and restore after. Don't update hboot until you are happy that you know what you have to do, as it's not something you want to mess up! And make sure you check the md5 before flashing.
