GPS and battery usage question..

OrKo

Android Expert
I was wondering how the GPS effected the battery usage. My g/f recently had her attain stolen at school, so I decided to get the GOTYA! app for us both and in order for it to fully function you must have GPS on pretty much all the time. So I guess my question is addressed to those who use GPS a lot, how does having it on all the time effect the battery?

Thanks in advance OrKo.

GPS will probably drain anywhere between 10-25% of the battery itself. It's something that is literally CONSTANTLY re-establishing a connection with a tower in order to work effectively, and properly...
The process of gps is about like this.
Phone turns on, gps kicks in, searches for satellite, connects, authorizes itself, searches for nearest cell towers, finds one, authorizes itself, sends your phones info, establishes connection, searches for wireless networks around (if you enable that part) collects them into a files, sends that info through the cell tower pinpointing your location to the servers to get more accurate data. Transmits that to the satellite then redoes it every half second or so...

So yeah, lot of battery going to be in play there.
