Help GPS auto activates?

Hello,

When I drag down the top status bar to look at the Quick Settings, I see that everything is off apart from Mobile Network (e.g. GPS is off, Wifi is off, etc). I'm keen on optimising the battery life.

Yesterday I was standing on the street and fired up Maps, and the GPS automatically identified my location. How did this happen if it's indicated as Off?

Thank you.

it should of asked for your permission to use google locate but could have to do with maps settings maybe even a fluke and skipped the authorization. you could have when something like that asks permission gives you the action to perform this by dault without always asking so when you turn gps apps on it will not ask for authorization if you chose that by default to turn on.

Hi ShortGamma, both Google Maps and HTC Locations use the mobile network to locate you and how close you are to the masts will determine the accuracy. They will also use your WiFi connection if it is switched on. In my case, when I'm at home, WiFi gives a more accurate location than the mobile network, and although I haven't tried it, would no doubt be the same from, for instance a BT Openzone hotspot. If you switch GPS on you get an even more accurate location once it has locked on, usually accurate to about 20 metres or less, depending on how many satellites are locked on to. Both Maps and Locations will prompt you to switch GPS on when you request navigation, but for the basic location they don't need GPS on.

Hi Tommo,

Thanks a lot! That explains it precisely. When I was on the street, the Maps approximated my located. To be honest given that I thought the GPS had kicked in, I would've expected it to be more accurate. But that explains it.

In this case, I'm happy to keep the GPS and just use the mobile network - this is good enough for me.

Thanks again.
