Root GPS / Compass ???

vce2005

Android Expert
Hi,

well, I am fairly new to the town I am in right now..... But being an outdoors-fan, I certainly know where N / E / S / W are and how to determine it with out a compass.....

Well, I got THREE different compass apps on my Prevail with CTMod3.68 and sure, I thought one of them should work properly. But they don't.... They show me SOUTH where NORTH should be......and EAST where WEST should be...... Never followed a sunset to the east ! LOL :)

And just to be really sure, I got my Garmin GPS out, also with compass and my Garmin GPS shows me the correct N / E / S / W directons....

I looked around but couldn't really find anything about a reversed compass.....

Anyone knows what that could be ?????

I know that ctmod has compass issues in the past. I'm not sure if they were fixed or not. If yours isn't working then I guess it wasn't fixed.

Well, I "googled" a lot about the GPS/Compass issue....... seems like MANY, MANY people have exactly the same problem with South being North...... And they have different phones and different ROM's.....

Navigation is working on the phone, so no problems there, but all compass apps I tried, even tricks with "up-side-down" calibration and such didn't work......

Guess for the "Compass" I'll stick with my reliable Garmin !!!! ;)

EDIT 1 : Found another post here in the forum, suggesting to "move" around and the compass will adjuts itself...... Well, didn't work either...... Might be a phone hardware issue or something......

EDIT 2 : I wonder if this would fix the issue, but I am to dumb doing that. Maybe someone more experienced with ROM's can see if that would be possible :

Many other phones specs are listed as having a compass but not the Prevail.

Might be part of the issue. Not sure if these apps would run off the built in compass sensor.

A compass will work on the Prevail. It worked perfect for me on CM7.

Blood has mentioned several times in the CTMod thread that he was having trouble with the compass. It has been some time ago since he's posted anything about it or I've seen anyone post on the subject.

I may be wrong but I think the compass problem started after CTMod 2.5.

If GPS is enabled, any GPS app with compass should display correct headings.... It does not seem to be a "Prevail or Custom ROM" issue, many people with different phones ( HTC, Samsung, LG, etc ), rooted or stock seem to have this exact problem. It might be able to be fixed with a custom ROM, but from all the searches I did, it's not a phone issue, but rather something on Gingerbread !!

Maybe someone knows how to fix it with a flashable or script solution.....

The issue I'm talking about WAS a issue with CTMod. The arrow on Maps would literally spin round and round. Compass apps wouldn't work either. I was almost positive the Blood fixed that issue. The problem you are having may be completely different from what I'm talking about.

As I stated above, my compass app worked perfect while running CM7.

Yeah, definitely a different issue.... It's not "spinning around", it's just displaying wrong.... like with many other phones and mod's !!!

But maybe, the link I posted above will help Bloodawn or someone who undewrstands more about it to maybe get it fixed..... We'll see..... ;)

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, you always could send me your Marquee....... I'll send you my spare, brand new Prevail back !!!

Hey, vce- got a solution to your problem
LOL....nicely done....the simplest of solutions. On a side note, I used a compass app before, and it told me to make figure 8 motions for a few seconds to calibrate each time I used it. I believe the app itself was just called Compass. Not sure if that will help you though.
