Root GPS.conf mods via someone at xda forum

tried that too... still very slow for me. i think the gps is just inconsistent.

If you want to see a really really fast lock use the gps fix and toggle the "use wireless" setting in location and security I.e. toggle it off then back on, press accept and you'll see about a 7 sec lock i use this on my phone tons :-)

My GPS was really taking a long time to lock. Usually 10 minutes or so using GPS Status before it would lock. I tried both just using gps only and then also with wireless network and it still took a long time. So I updated the lbstestmode to use MS Based and the gps.conf file that was mentioned earlier and now I get a lock in GPS Status in about 8 seconds from a cold boot using only the GPS with no wireless network.

If anyone wants to try, I've attached a flashable zip. I took the zip posted by merkuralex earlier in this thread (thanks merkuralex) and added the lbstestmode.apk posted in this SDX thread:
Moment 2.2 GPS Fix update.zip

I'll repost the instructions here (thanks to cornaljoe on sdx for the actual instructions):

Flash the attached zip first then follow these directions:

1. After boot create a shortcut to Activities -> LbsTestMode -> .LbsTestMode
You may have to install LauncherPro if your launcher doesn't support the activities option under shortcuts. Once installed all launchers will have this option.

My note: Just an FYI, LauncherPro can be downloaded from the Market for free if you don't already have it. Or any other app that allows you to create shortcuts (such as AnyCut I think can also do that)

2. Start LbsTestMode and goto the application settings and set it to MS Based and press back until you exit app.

3. Reboot phone and then use GPS Status under a clear sky until you get a lock.
The main thing to pay attention to is the numbers labeled Error(m) and Fix/Sat in the lower corners of the compass.
Error(m) is the accuracy of your location in meters which shows after you get a lock. Fix/Sat is the number of satellites locked and in view prospectively.

right but this is not gps, this uses wifi and cell network data to help approximate position. In the middle of nowhere with no data you'll still wait a while for that gps lock (even with the hack because that IDs servers to use for time data). Sometimes you just get what you get. That wireless positioning works great with data, though. I use it too.

Agreed but rather than maps use a compass to check your position because I'm quite certain that the GPS is finding you the problem your running into is that the map isn't loading and if the map cant create a position the GPS telling the map to put you somewhere when the map doesn't have the required info to do such is resulting in a seemingly slow connection. If having the internet helps to position you faster wouldn't it seem that using it would be wise? Yes you should be able to locate yourself anywhere in the world n yada yada yada but how ofter are you really like lost in the middle of the ocean.... and conveniently have a working cell phone? I realise that the GPS is indeed a great feature and i do use mine very often for work but i also accept i did indeed buy a cell phone not a Garmin or tom tom... I wanted convenience and that's what I got, if perfect performance is what i needed than i would have gone a different route.

I've only installed it 30 minutes ago, but I'm very happy with the results so far. 30 seconds cold-start, <10 seconds guaranteed if anything else. If you don't see me responding in this thread, that means it's still working@@!!! :)

It still takes a long time to lock on during the daytime. Once it's locked it's good, but definitely not the great results I had last night. Still inconsistent.

Just bought a MT in hopes most of the problems were operator error or something else. The phone doesn't get GPS inside at all (one sat vs. 7 for Optimus), reluctant to make a network connection at all, and it sucks battery like crazy.

I mainly upgraded to get more internal memory due to the stranglehold on internal memory on the Optimus. Flash would have been nice too, but I don't care about a bigger screen and whatever the other benefits are. But my need to use the GPS and get a reliable 3G network connection are paramount.

I have seen all these suggestions for the GPS that work for some and not for others. Is all of this worth it when you still have the other problems this phone has? I just can't justify it and will wait for Black or some other better alternative.

BTW, I heard the receiver was the same as the Thunderbolt which also has some related receiver issues.

Thanks
