Help GPS has failed

Please allow me to beat this dead horse into the ground. Part of the allure of this phone is the integration of Googleapplications. But Google maps isn't working and after several calls with Sprint (without a clue, they always digress into hard reseting the device) I'm stuck with a disfunctional Moment.

In fact, they recommend taking the phone back to original point of sale and trade in the phone. I suppose I could do that and waste another hour at Best Buy, however, I'd still find myself somewhere in West Africa when clicking on Google maps.

I'd think this missing functionality would press Samsung and/or Sprint into upgrading the firmware to 2.0/1.6 etc. If it simply worked as advertised I wouldn't be so annoyed......

I thought I was just challenged by new-to-me technology! This is my first "smart phone." I was playing with Sprint Nav and gmaps just to see how they worked... and they "kind of" worked for the first 1/2 hour I was trying them out and both apps just slowly stopped working until neither app was able to find my location. Now, gmaps has my location somewhere in Russia. I'm in Cleveland...

If I:

1) Turn off wireless networks to find "my location".
2) Turn on GPS ability to find "my location".
3) Then click on Google Maps

It properly finds me on the map.

If I:

1) Turn on wireless networks to find "my location".
2) Turn on GPS ability to find "my location"
3) Then click on Google Maps

It puts me in Malaysia or Africa

If I:

1) Turn off both wireless networks/GPS ability to find "my location"
2) Click on Google Maps

It does nothing. (which makes sense)

To summarize... you need to turn off the wireless networks ability to find your location, and leave on the GPS. Have fun w/the battery life!

My GPS (on google maps) kept showing me off the coast of Zanzibar!!! (I'm in TX).
I just got off the phone with Sprint techichal support about this 1) to see if they have any ideas on how to fix this and 2) to give them feedback that the GPS is sucking. The very kind lady told me to do the following, and so far it has worked for me!
I'm sure it is (probably) just temporary, but I wanted to share this with other people having issues with their GPS.
FIRST, turn off your GPS and Wireless "location settings" before you turn the phone off.
THEN, turn the phone off, take the battery out, and leave it out for 30 seconds.
Turn the phone back on with full boot, then turn the GPS back on via settings.
After I did that (turning the GPS BEFORE I turned the phone off and took the battery out), I went into Sprint Nav and it brought my correct location right up! From there, I went to Google Maps, and it too had my location spot on!
I'll post back if I am back in Zanzibar tomorrow but as now, my GPS seems to be accurate!

Didn't work for me, as I'm still apparently halway between Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa:(

Same for me.

The settings above work for me. Using wireless networks doesn't help at all. I use navigation to look for stuff as it comes up. I leave it on to not deal with the hassle of turning it on and off. I don't want to use an app for it at this time.

I've started to look forward to seeing where in the world my GPS puts me each morning. It's a big fan of Fiji and Bosnia. I don't know if that's funny or sad. Either way, If I turn off the 'use wireless networks' setting, are there any other downsides to having this off? (not that there are any upsides right now). Or, basically, is it going to affect anything else you can think of?

I'm hopeful Samsung will fix the GPS issue. My Mogul and Touch Pro both had GPS receivers that worked well but had small screens and low volume speakers. Add to that WM's perchance to crash at the most inopportune
times made them all but unusable for nav use. Now I have a stable phone with a larger screen and a loud speaker...but the GPS receiver sucks. Arghhh! At least my wifes Pre works well for nav.

I agree. I traded in my Hero for the Moment and the one thing I truly miss with the Hero is the "right on" GPS features - including the apps that utilized those features (i.e., 'Locale' and 'Layar').

I just hope it truly is a software issue that can be resolved with the firmware update rather than a hardware issue.

FYI

I think I have found out what is causing aGPS to not work. If you enable WiFi on the device, and enable Use wireless network option, the aGPS will function. You do not have to be connected to a WiFi network, or even have settings for a WiFi network, just the fact of enabling WiFi will allow aGPS to function properly.

Yeah.. I just realized this too. Earlier I was using WiFi in my house.. pulled up google.com's mobile site and it said my location.. with GPS turned off! I checked skyhook (I believe they map out WiFi positions) and my wifi location couldn't be detected on my laptop so it would seem the aGPS was working.. and accurately!

Wifi "On" + "Use Wireless Networks" On = Location found!

Hmmm. :D

Looks like a programmer mistakenly assigned the WiFi soft button with aGPS and the Wifi radio, when aGPS should have gone to "Use Wireless Networks" item in Settings. I'd consider this a software bug, big time!

So as someone who doesn't yet have their Moment (ugh... beginning to sound like a broken record here), what are the functional implications of this bug? Silly inconvenience? Minor issue, affecting performance/battery life?

So it seems celebrations aren't in order yet.. just tried at work and it says I'm in south america. Anyone having 100% success?

It seems that if you turn of all of your wifi settings, and only have your GPS on, everything navigation/location works fine. Now, you have to turn off your wifi in your location setting as well, not just the normal wifi.

It is really just an inconvenience that an app like quick setting makes minimal.

With all the Wifi settings off, I have not had issues with the google maps, or sprint navigation. In fact they work well.

It would be cool to have them work together, but I don't see it as a must have.

I was wondering the same thing. This bug to me could be a deal breaker. I have the Hero and was interested in the 800mhz processor in the Moment, but with the GPS so whacky it concerns me along with the battery showing falsly. What do you guys think??

How often are you driving with sprint navigator and need wifi?

I am 99% sure that unfortunately the aGPS problem is not fixed and the phone is using WiFi access points to determine location.
