Newbie
My current contract on my HTS Desire is up in mid August and so I am just beginning to consider what to replace it with. It seems to me that it is a choice between the S3 or the HTC One X.

A useful feature on my Desire is the free Sat Nav, which I use quite often and is very effective. Just prior to getting the Desire, I read lengthy threads on this site about how bad the Sat Nav was on the Galaxy-think it was probably the predecessor to the S2. I don't want to get into a contract for a phone where an important feature is not up to standard.

Could people with the S3 post here to let me know how effective their Sat Nav is? Also, anyone with any views on the best selection out of the two phones would be most welcome.

Thanks

Bertie

I'm sure you will get some posts eventually but this phone isn't out yet. So we don't know.

Sorry-rather a basic mistake to make. Had seen it advertised everywhere with prices, and so thought it must be out. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply in any event-much appreciated. One of the values of sites like this is the willingness of those with knowledge to share it so readily.

Sure, although obviously this isn't based on user experience of the S3 (I do have the international version of the One X). You should also check out the comparison on the two by GSMArena here.

In favour of the S3:
Better CPU
Better GPU
Better GPS (has GLONASS, the S4 Krait One X's on AT&T have GLONASS too so likely no advantage over those)
Better battery life, removable battery
Storage (SD slot up to 64GB with exFAT support, if you think you can live within 25GB of user-available memory on the One X this won't be a difference that matter to you neccessarily)
Better sound quality (see GSMArena comparison, the S4 One X's are likely to have better SQ in comparison to the Tegra 3 ones if the One S RMAA recordings are anything to go by, don't know how those will compare to the S3)
USB OTG support
Unlocked bootloaders (sure, you can unlock the One X's, but that'll void your warranty as you have to go through HTC to do it, with the Samsung you should be able to do it without invalidating warranty)
Much better video capture, although future firmware revisions for the One X may negate that advantage
Better loudspeaker

One X over the S3:
Better materials
Better design/more appealing looks
Tegra optimised games (although most of these will be able to be run on the S3 via Chainfire 3D)
Sense UI (although that is a subjective thing and since launchers are freely changeable not a great selling point for me)

Unknown:
Stills camera quality - probably advantage to the S3 in decent light and advantage the One X in lower light, most users will be happy with the images produced by either though
Screen - I've been a fan of AMOLED for a long time but I struggle to believe the S3 screen is better than the One X screen, that said GSMArena think the S3 screen is better, so I guess it's one you have to see for yourself and there is a fair amount of subjectivity involved here

FWIW, GPS doesn't work on my One X. I'm going to have to send it back to HTC for repair. I know I'm not alone with this problem, but I don't think it is very widespread.

Same problem with my One X. Up to date ICS maps etc.

GPS is shot, won't hold down a position for long, wanders up to a mile away from actual location.

Tested in various Nav apps, indoors outdoors all weather, always same behaviour.

Really crap when trying to drive with satnav, constant rerouting and jumping of position, useless for navigation until fixed.

Asked Amazon to replace and they sent second handset which does same thing....

HTC fix this fantastic phone please!
