GPS issues on Nexus 7 2nd Gen

Hey all!

Bought my first tablet a few days ago after owning an android phone past couple years.

It is amazing, but the GPS chip seems to randomly stop working, although it is activated. I bought the tablet for back country navigation, as my phone requires the mobile network chip to activate if I want the GPS chip.

Ive done several tracks using Backcountry Navigator Pro, and the GPS chip stops working until I do a reboot. Longest it worked was about 20 mins, the shortest probably under a minute. Same problem using GPS Status app.

I work at a National Park, so have no need for Google Maps. Havnt even used it, so not 100% sure if it is app, OS or hardware related.

I look forward to learning more about this tablet and our community!

Edit: BTW - activating the GPS chip is a real pain in the arse. I get spammed to agree to Google's location junk.

There are a few things you can do to test it. I suggest GPS Status App from the Play Store. Use it to determine if the GPS works longer than it does in your App.

Also, if you got asked to approve the location service more than once something is wrong.
 
Colchiro it seems a rocky start for the Nexus 7 Gen 2. This just brings back bad memories of the LTE Gnex....
 
Thanks for the heads up and the links. Very clear this is a widespread problem, with no fix. Google and Asus apparently know about the problem.

I bought this for GPS navigation, so it is a brick to me. If there isn't a fix in a couple of days, I'm going to return it.

I was a late-comer to the Gnex so missed out on all the fun.... :D

I didn't get one until April 2012. I took an early upgrade to the Note II last month and love it.
 
Don't claim that you haven't had GPS issues if you haven't used it for more than 2 minutes... and I bet you were weren't traveling. Try using it while hiking, jogging or driving; it is worthless. GPS promptly stops working and won't work until a reboot.

Maybe they haven't.

I'm pretty sure not every device has an issue.

And there's now word of the Gnex upgraded to 4.3 is now having GPS problems! :eek:
My 1st Gen N7 on 4.3 via CM10.2 is finding my location exactly in just a couple seconds.
However, I haven't tried using it for navigation. My S3 suffices just fine. :)
 
Yes, I jog with my GPS devices on the trail. It is called trail running. Topo maps are not always 100% accurate when it comes to placement of the trail on a map, altitude, distance, etc.

I also conduct research in forest plots that are off trail, and are typically located using GPS coordinates.

cool sounds a lot more fun than just boring running on a street.
