Help GPS issues?

Yes.

My understanding is RFS is just FAT with some form of journal-ing added and it performs appallingly, hence the lag.

The lag fixes that people have produced effectively replace this with something EXT like.

I know we are running way off topic here on the GPS issue but just bear with us for a short time everyone.

Re RFS and Lag... Have a quick read of this.

Sigh - are they even going to make any kind of statement about what has happened?

Their disregard for their customers is astonishing.

In a way though, isn't this being done for their customers? What I mean is that if they really disregarded their customers, they would continue to ship a product that didn't work right and call it a day without being willing to start over from scratch.

Granted, their transparency leaves a lot to be desired, but that is a probably with most businesses these days.

Hate to say it but earlier I gave an update to Froyo being yet again delayed now to the end of Nov.
It's now been officially confirmed by Samsung on Facebook.

As usual Samsung don't give anything away... simply sticking with the very basic apology and a revised date... nothing else.

I'll keep you posted on anything I hear.

Woa thats quite a delay.

I'm glad I found good settings for my GPS meanwhile. At the default settings it already worked okay except it would sometimes place me on the wrong road suddenly and confuse the navi software. Initially I didn't understand the 'Accuracy' setting in the GPS menu so I increased it from 50 to 100, which only made things worse, cause as I understand it now, its the maximum # of meters inaccuracy that it still accepts when tracking.

After putting Accuracy to 20, and with running TrackerBooster in the background, I now get accurate tracking. In Mytracks it sticks to the path I go just about perfectly and at the points where its not perfect, it deviates no more than a couple of meters. For navigational purposes thats more than adequate, and indeed navi progs work fine now.

Other settings Ive settled on are HotStart, MS-Based, SuplServer=AUTO, Skyhook=off, Use wifi for locaion=off.

It's still not quite as accurate as my Nokia but pretty close and perfectly acceptable for all practical purposes. I may be lucky compared to most SGS owners in that it already worked pretty well to start with, all it needed was a little adjustment in accurary.
Tested with 5 or 6 test travels of about half an hour each, spread out over a couple days.

For me that about settles my GPS issue. Sure I'm looking forward to further improvement in a future update, but for now I can finally enjoy my SGS fully without being frustrated about the GPS all the time.

Thanks for all the helpful and informative posts here, especially thanks to Beards for making such an effort to stimulate samsung and to keep us informed!

I appreciate the effort you have gone to but this is now old news.
I personally posted the dates here two days ago at post 609.

I know the NEWS is old, but the fact Samsung has finally bothered to officially release a press release (yesterday), is hardly old news :-D

It is when it has already been covered.

Yes, and then you stated:

We now have a lot more information (such as the new version of Kies etc) via an official press release.

Anyway I'm not arguing, I hadn't seen the press release mentioned on here (and I don't count Facebook or Twitter as official for anything), so I thought I'd post it. No offence meant!!

The fact remains they have not apologised and have failed to acknowledge that there are bugs to be fixed.

The press release reads like they're doing us a favour by planning to make 2.2 available.

No mention of delay, no sorry. It's an insult.

I also said it has been delayed until the end of November and if you read the heading in the Facebook link I posted it clearly says:-
"Hi everyone, sorry for not getting this to you sooner. The Android 2.2 software is being fully tested with UK operators and the upgrade will be available in the UK from early November. We expect all operator versions of the software to be fully tested and downloadable by the end of November. Let us know if you have any questions. Many thanks, Samsung"

Anyway, lets all work towards a common goal.

I know - I have been passing your information onto the Vodafone UK SGS forum, so don't think I have been ignoring your input - I very much appreciate it!

I know, but Facebook and Twitter are in no way official channels for press releases, they are little more than sound boards. The same thing happened with the September release date - that came from Twitter if I recall, but there was never anything official from Samsung UK via a PR. In fact this PR is the first one from Samsung UK about 2.2 - so if they miss November, THEN we really have something to moan about!

Anyway, lets all work towards a common goal.

I agree, and I thought I was :p

sammy really needs to get its act together, granted that it is not exactly the worst out there. SE for example still has 1.6 on its flagship phone... That being said I do feel like ranting about this whole debacle.

It seems that manufacturers are releasing phones in beta stages, (including apple). With very little testing and optimizing done.

I really long to the day that we can install whatever operating system on out phone like we do with computers.

If it was as simple as a software fix dont you think it would have been fixed by now.
I really believe they cannot fix it. With so many people complaining all kver the internet samsung surely would have patched it as a priority.
Why wait for froyo?
I think they are hoping people just accept it as we are tied into contracts.
I would love to be proved wrong.

I like how they list "Google Navigation" as if it is a new feature with Froyo, and how it is advertising a GPS that they have to know is hit-or-miss in terms of usage. Maybe this means it will be fixed with the update, or maybe it is just more careless PR.

Still advertising the GPS function kind of seems like mocking everyone whose GPS is not functioning though...

I apologise if this has been mentioned before but thought it might be of use.:)
There are some very good articles available describing how portable gps units work, here is one that I found usefull.
How does the Global Positioning System (GPS) work ?

The interesting part for me was the explanation of Agps, warm start and cold start.

This explains to me how after an update we all think its great when we get a lock within 15 secs.
The real test comes when you use the gps for any period of time.
There are times when my gps seams to be working fine, I drove from Glasgow to Birmingham and the gps appeared to behave in the main okay ( co pilot live)
now is this Co pilot software helping by locking you onto the road.
If I use the gps to drive from my house to work, 8 miles, sometimes its fine other times its total rubbish putting me 3 streets away or in a river.
If I use my tracks its almost always terrible sometimes just poor.
So if the system works fine on some days but so badly on others obviously the unit cannot get a good signal on the bad days.
If this is the case then the hardware set up is of a poor design or of poor quality and all the software updates in the world will not fix it.

I love the galaxy S for its screen and web browsing ( now ive got flash) but as a gps device its so unreliable that its dangerous.
:(

I've said so before in this forum but rather sadly, I'll say it again. I think you are absolutely correct. I have run an electronics design and manufacturing company and there's no way you would let this level of bad publicity continue if there was any kind of quick firmware fix. Having said that I suppose we used to actually care about our customers. Years ago I had a conversation with the CEO of a large US electronics company in the volume market and he told me that they only considered something a real problem suitable for recall if they actually got more than 20% of the product back!

If you think about it, if they can stall on the problem long enough to revise the design/manufacturing or even get a replacement product out then they can just tell all the new customers (the only ones they care about because it's new revenue) 'There's no problem there if you buy our products now..look at these recent reviews' They can also let the dealers and distributors replace units only for the REALLY angry and vociferous/ customers.

All very cynical but the alternative for them is to hold their hands up and accept all those faulty units back..and that's probably a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in returns and even more in bad publicity...a powerful reason to be economical with the truth.

The decision now is do I live with the gps issue and buy a proper gps device or do I Keep sending my phone back knowing that it wont be fixed .
