That's good to hear, at least it makes it look less like i'm lying when i say mine's fine! Just keep hearing these people who still have trouble on JPO, especially claiming the battery drains fast overnight.
All i did was factory reset BEFORE flashing as i always do, and sometimes i even do it again afterwards just to be sure. Just feel it's good practice. And hey it can't hurt!

That is EXACTLY what I did..... I used the 3-Button Recovery Mode and Factory Reset the device before adding Froyo JPO.
I don't know why some users on JPO have issues whereas others like you and I are extremely happy.... Part of it is down to how the Froyo was implemented, part down to what is installed and part in how these Apps are controlled.
Just as you say my battery is superb. Granted I help it along the way by using SystemPanel.
SystemPanel is a great tool for a number of reasons, most noticeably in that providing you set it up correctly you can identify which programs are in a loop and hitting the CPU. With this iinfo you can stop them dead in their tracks and restart when you leave SystemPanel.

As an example ~ I use 'Data Counter Widget'. Occasionally it gets into a conflict and hits the CPU which in turn grabs a large slice of the battery. All I do is terminate it, come out of SystemPanel and restart it. It's then up and running again only this time not grabbing the CPU's time.... Job done.

As far as Samsung are concerned the latest Froyo and combined fixes should have sorted out the GPS.
It's still debatable that they sorted the lag and I told them I do not believe it did... but as their support team are still working on improving the filesystem one could easily take from this they too do not accept the lag is cured.

In reality, I suppose this will never be a final answer as some say it's fixed whilst others continue to have issues.

Personally, I upgraded to Froyo (using Odin as Kies temporary bricked the phone) and with the JPO version installed my GPS is absolutely spot on.
For the very first time not only am I seeing multiple satellites with SNR signals below 20 but I am getting an almost instantaneous lock and the position is extremely accurate. Not only that but I can obtain satellites from within the confines of my home, something which was totally unheard of before the upgrade.
I use a variety of GPS Apps from Google Maps through to My Tracks, OS Atlas, Google Earth, GPS Compass Map and CoPilot.
Then for additional data I have GPS Test Plus and Ulysse Gizmos with finally Layar for augmented reality. All of which now makes using GPS a total breeze.

To note I have also used RyanZA's z4root & OCLF which have ensured the SGS is as quick and smooth as I could ever wish for.

I kinda get that BUT it isn't extremely accurate but fairly so... and it finds my location fairly quick... But this is where I think the (atleast my) problem is... even tho it is much better at holding the fix on sattelites and isn't dropping them all ever so often it is still all over the place (still in "same area" tho with a span of around 200 meters) and often zigs and zags this way and that... This is recorded with myTracks and is from the Phone in my hand staying in the same place for about 20-30 minutes:

GPS madness

In google maps I quite often got the pumping GPS icon and my location jumped about 500-1000 meters (strangely almost always in same direction) while my buddys Phone (X10) was centered almost dead on or 5-10 meters wrong and staying there.

This isn't fixed in my book and even tho I "can live with it" it still bugs me that neither they/nor I can get it to work properly... Would any of you (with a "working" GPS please make a similar test with f.ex. MyTracks with the phone just sitting in same place recording for x amount of minutes? Just to compare...

Couldn't agree any further....

Just as a side-note: I've recently taken hold of a Galaxy Tab (I know, I know... I said I wouldn't get one but the offer was just too tempting to resist). Anyway, the reason for this side-note is this:-
Both the Galaxy S & Tab are new high end phones designed by the same company. Both have been submitted as the very best in high end mobile communication.
Here's the bit that matters.... whilst the SGS has been blighted with nothing short of a horrendous start and with little support, the SGT is going absolutely great...
It works straight out of the box, superbly responsive and gives nothing short of excellence in it's daily use.

The point being, Samsung can make excellent hardware and when they get it right boy do they get it right.....
However, when they get it wrong, boy oh boy do they get it wrong!

I've exactly the same issues as 'Cleanermonkey'.

Froyo onboard and with/without 3rd party apps the GPS is marginally better than 2.1. The overlay of the GPS track verses the route actually taken can briefly be spot on but often then jumps about 100 - 200m from where I am and back again.

I amended my settings to update position regularly but it just doesn't seem to be following my track or updating as often as it should. Sometimes the track continues in a straight line 200m past where I did a 90 degree turn.

It also takes what feels like an eternity to find it's location when the GPS arrives in a different country from where it was last used. I did a 45 minute drive recently with the SGS in full view of an unobstructed sky and it only got the strong lock on in the final 5 minutes.

A final complaint I have is the fact that sometimes applications can't access the GPS signal. 75% of the time, the applications will start the GPS when a GPS position is requested. However, sometimes the only way I can get the application to get a position from the GPS, is by turning the phone off and on.

To my mind these faults are just not acceptable. Samsung have had enough time to resolve this now.

I purchased my phone using a credit card in the UK about 4 months ago. I am now considering whether to return the phone using the protection that all UK credit cards offer in the form of the Consumer Credit Act - Section 75. Google it or try MoneySavingExpert websites or even asking your credit card company themselves about it to find further information. I have used this before in another example where the product failed and the shop refused to accept that it was a design flaw. The credit card company refunded me reasonably swiftly with minimal hassle.

Samsung reps if you are reading this beaware that if you do not rectify this, keep customers updated and acknowledge faults rather than getting Indian call centres to pretend that it is the user, UK customers will take matters into our own hands and seek recourse elsewhere. You will then have the banks complaining to the telephone retailers regarding the refunds and the retailers > to suppliers > to Samsung. All parties will not want to touch Samsung phones or products again!

You have brought this upon yourself and I feel that you should be made an example of this shameful customer service, support and product design.

Firstly, please could you direct me to the app that will let me see how my GPS is working in terms of satellites etc. I don't have a problem, but want to know out of interest.

Secondly, is there an app that will give me good directions for walking on foot. I have used the sat nav with a degree of success, but would like one specifically for walking when I'm in a town or city.

Thirdly, is there one that would help me on walks in the countryside that I could follow and link into an ordnance survey map or something similar? I regularly get lost when trying to follow the walks set out in the circular walk type books.

Fourthly, (off the topic, I know), is there an app for a variety of smilies that I could buy?

As seepage mentions GPSTest is about the best App available for this task.
It is available direct from The Market and note there is also a Paid version which offers a little extra.

For this I would recommend My Tracks which is also available on The Market.
My Tracks is Free.

For this I would recommend either OS Atlas which can be obtained either Free or for better results the Paid version.
Another is the Free App OS Map again available on the Market, is Free but I have not tried this App.

They did indeed have a problem Andy with the antenna on this new phone. I'm hoping the new design has rectified it's shortcomings.

I really love the phone but I really hate that I payed alot of my hard earned money for something that is not working like it's supposed to and one that I wouldn't dare rely on in a situation where it was to guide me from A to B and I didn't kind of know what way to take in the first place. (Which sort of removes the need for a GPS in the first place)

i dont think we can do any thing as samsung have not said that there a problem with the gps but released some sort of fix for it in the us.. but nothing in the uk i think there wanting every body to forget about it for froyo but its still the same when im sat in my house on goole maps im running up and down my street...there some thing else why remove the car dock before it get released because the gps is rubish if some thing happend samsung would be liable

Plebs on Orange... indeed. I phoned up to cancel my contract so I could go over to Vodafone and pick up a Nexus One... Orange tricked me into staying with them offering a free Galaxy S and the promise of regular android updates.
