Hi all , quick question , is it better to leave GPS turned on so apps like my weather locator can update to my place or will that be done over a data connection and also does GPS use battery when left on ????? Cheers , Dave

i think data will suffice for the weather locator. I would have thought GPS would be fine to leave on battery-wise if you're not using it. i might be wrong

Its part of the android magic. I know latitude can be busy but generally nothing to worry about.

GPS only uses battery if an app requests your location, some apps (like a weather app) will request a location in the background(with the screen off), thereby using battery in the background. however most apps have a setting to turn off automatic location detection and will only update upon your request. Or some apps have the option to only use cell tower location rather than gps.

Mine is on, it only Turns itself on when an app needs it, otherwise it just stays idle, not consuming any battery.:)

I’ve always left GPS off because I don’t want to constantly tell the world exactly where I am... for no particular reason. As for apps like weather, most of them let you tell them your zip code and it shows that location.

I leave GPS on. As has been said, it only uses power when an app uses it (and I tested that pretty rigorously myself a few years ago).

I do however leave wireless based location off most of the time, as I reckon Google collect enough info about me already ;)

I can confirm that GPS only uses power when an app uses it.

In terms of being tracked I reckon the wireless location is more intrusive, as that's continuous, so I leave that off except when I think I have a need (if GPS were on constantly that would show up!).
