This might sound ridiculous, but I found that pushing the square portion slightly where the flash is housed, to try and get the contacts to touch a bit more works wonders. Used to struggle to get a fix even outside at times in the past, but since doing this, I even get a fix indoors with blinds down in a house. In apartments I don't though, have to be beside a window for a fix. Fixes outside are extremely fast too, usually in 10sec or less.
The only explanation for the fact that I get a fix inside a house is that the gps signal somehow can penetrate through the roof, considering it's not as thick as having a few apartments above you.
Give it a try, see if it works before you open up your DHD and potentially break one of the contacts
