Help GPS problem: speech replaced by simple "dings"

My X is on Gingerbread OTA, unrooted. A couple times now, the GPS navigation suddenly lost is ability to speak english, and every voice notification/direction is replaced by an simple "DING!"

It takes a reboot to get normal voices back.

Is this happening to anyone else? Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

I have this problem too!

As of yesterday, I went to use the GPS. First voice was the robotic. Then it changed to the newer, more fluid female, and then went to dings. The rest of the car ride it only dinged when a turn/change was coming.

Don't see anywhere to fix this. Essentially makes the turn by turn useless.

Dings, different voices??? I'm on the current Google Maps Version 5.6.2 and have never had a single ding or a different voice...just the same kind of robotic female voice.

Go to settings... voice input & output... text-to-speech. See if you have more than one engine (pico) installed. You can play with the settings.

Tried this, problem remains. I also have eSpeak TTS but it isn't checked off. Any ideas?

Have you tried eSpeak?

I suspect it's a bug but sometimes messing around with the settings might fix it.

Found an app call SVOX which itself is free. You first have to install the app. THEN, you have to pick from a library of different voices and purchase one in order for it to work. The purchase price is $2.99. I chose US English Grace Voice and I like it much better than the stock Pico TTS robotic voice. You can also adjust the voice volume, speed and pitch of the voice to your taste.
