Help GPS Programs cause phone to restart

I had the same problem on Fresh 2.3.3. These are the steps tried.

1. Removed all apps that were installed by me. Still would reset as soon as the gps icon at the top would pop up.

2. Made nandroid back up, wiped nand, cache, and ext. Restored... and still resets. (didnt think this step was actually gonna help but was worth a try for future references)

3. Made backup of all apps and app data with Titanium Backup (could not live w/o it).

4. Wiped nand, cache, and ext, reflashed Fresh 2.3.3.

5. Restored EVERYTHING with Titaium backup, phone was the same exact as before minus the GPS resetting it.

Hopefully the bug wont come back. But this causes me to believe that it is not a app that is causing these problems, seeing as how I restored every app I had from before and even re-ran them just in case they were changing a system setting or something. Still running fine...

Hello All,
I posted this on another post, it has worked for me with no problems for about a week now. Maybe it will work for you.
1. Call Sprint and have them give you the MSL CODE for your phone.
2. Dial ##GPSCLRX#
3. Enter the MSL code that you recieved from Sprint.
4. Your phone will reboot.
5. After your phone starts up again it should not reboot because of a GPS crash (test it out).

I had the same issue where my phone rebooted whenever I used any navigation or map application. It also rebooted if I used Layar or any app that needed to use GPS. Hopefully this fix actually sticks. So far so good. Good Faith Evo family.

Sprint/HTC still need to find and correct what causes the GPS to malfunction and issue new firmware.

In the meantime, Sprint *2 gave my 6-digit MSL code/password without hesitation. Dialing ##GPSCLRX# (##4772579#) and entering the MSL code worked like a charm as a stop gap measure so I once again have GPS.

I text'd myself the ##GPSCLRX# and my MSL Code, locked the message so I will have it next time I have the problem.

Thank you to AndroidForums for the ability to share these tips...

I've been going back and forth w/ Sprint advanced tech support for the padt few dayd on this issue. Their first response was a hard reset. I advised them I wouldn't go that route. I've "rebuilt" the phone three times now, 4 if you count the 2.1 OS upgrade.
They next advised I take the phone to the sprint store. I did that and the first thing they wanted to do was a hard reset. I walked out. I spoke later to a cust sat rep & advised I would not state I was satisfied until they fix the problem.

Called Sprint to see if this "fix" would wipe the phone. The tech couldn't find any info on it so after ten minutes of searching I suggested they try it on a phone they had there. She stated it didn't wipe the two contacts she added before the "fix" so I took the leap and tried it on my phone. It worked, GPS is working again and nothing was wiped. Thanks all for the assistance.

I'm sure you were worried, but were glad it worked as you hoped. Thanks for doing this and reporting back to the community!

I have not tried that as it is stated that it will wipe the phone. As I mentioned I will avoid any #fix# which wipes the phone. Can anyone state definitively that this will NOT wipe the phone?

Read again bro, it does not wipe the phone, do it and your issue will be resolved!!

Continue reading, and you'll see that he did it, and it didn't wipe... I don't blame him for being cautious. :)

OOpps my bad I thought he was saying he would not do it because he originally read it would wipe it, LOL eyes are not what they were, LOL

I registered just to give my input on this problem. I personally fixed the issue by uninstalling the "WHERE" app, and the Google Places Directory app. Now I don't know WHICH one of these were the issue, all I'm here to say is, I had the same GPS problem that caused the program to crash (Sprint, Google Navigator), and after I uninstalled these two apps, I ceased to have the problem).

Welcome to the forum! Thanks for sharing your experience. Isn't it weird the different experiences we each have on the Hero? I have been using these exact two apps, without any GPS issues since last Nov. It's possible that it is something I am doing differently than you. I reboot the phone daily (turn it off at bedtime and charge it up over-night).

Interesting because I too removed those apps plus all the others I'd loaded and the problem remained. I went so far as to reboot after removing each app and again as I loaded the apps back onto the phone. I'm happy to hear that you were able to resolve the issue as I am accutely aware of how frustrating it can be. It was made worse by the fact that I was traveling to a city I am not familiar with and GPS would have been useful. Here's hoping none of us have this problem ever again.

I kind of need to modify what I said earlier. While I still believe either the WHERE app and the Google Places app was the problem, initially when uninstalling them, it didn't fix the problem. What I did was use the RESET function in one of the menus, then went back in and reinstalled EVERY app but these two. I just didn't say that in my original post, just for the purposes of simplicity, but since people responded, it's only fair that I'm completely honest. So yeah, 1) reset, 2) don't install WHERE and/or Google Places Directory.

I had the SAME problem... anytime I used any app that had GPS my HTC Hero would suddenly just restart...

I did a factory restore on my phone and the problem was gone... then I reinstalled all my apps and the problem was back...

I did another factory restore and reinstalled all my apps one by one except for Twitter... I suspected that was a problematic app... and viola! No problems for 3 days....

Now this is the official Twitter app... I know they just released an update about 2 days ago for the app and I don't know if that fixes a problem... I hear that people are having problems uninstalling the twitter app...

I say restore and reinstall all apps except for twitter and other apps mentioned on the forum as being problematic... see what it does for you

Think about it... The twitter app came out after the 2.1 update.... the app itself was never updated the whole time... buggy stuff

If I open any google map/sprint nav program phone restarts every time. I have installed google map update, updated firmware, PRL etc.. and nothing seems to work. Just had Sprint store install 2.1 and was very happy with it up till now. Any ideas on what would cause this?

I too have this problem. CONTINUOUSLY!!
I finally called and got a competent Tech.
said i needed to reboot my GPS
##GPS257#
it then asked for a password which he supplied.
It worked
HOPE THIS HELPED
G'LUCK!

Hi all... Long time lurker, first time poster... :)

I have been having this crash problem for a couple days now and tried the ##GPSCLRX# fix mentioned above. For now, it looks like it's working!!

The only thing I ran into that might help someone in the future-- make sure your GPS is switched on when you try to enter the MLS code (mine was toggled off the first two times I entered the code), otherwise the phone will just sit there forever and say that it's verifying the password.

Fingers crossed that this is a permanent fix and thanks to those who posted it!!

My phone is crashing as well when I push the GPS widget. A work around is to remove the GPS widget, don't use it. Instead, slide your finger from top of screen then down to pull down the Notifications window, select the Quick settings tab at the bottom, Now you can turn on/off GPS without crashes. I still want a fix, but don't have the time to jerk around with lousy sprint CS/tech support. Hope this helps those of you like me that need the GPS for work/directions.
