Help GPS still works on Airplane mode?

I flew last night and put my phone on Airplane Mode. I noticed the GPS icon still going off.

I thought Airplane Mode meant that all signals are stopped? Especially if it's using aGPS?

i don't think gps affects anything and won't cause problems. agps relies on data network from carrier. im curious did it locate your location correctly when you were in the air?

a-gps doesn't work on the ground either . Here's to hoping for an improvement in the coming 2.1 update.

That's right, it's a receiving function. So it's okay on an airplane.

Depends on which drink server -er- stewardess -er- FLIGHT ATTENDANT (that's it!) is on your flight. They don't understand a GPS unit is only a receiver and made me turn mine off, while people were using wireless headphones all over the place.

Aside from that, many flights now have free wifi on the flight. Not to mention the fact that radio towers, radar signals, satellites, and the freaking SUN do not stop transmitting just because we're in the air.

Yes, airplane mode just stops all (but the most miniscule) transmissions from the phone.
