GPS tracker app

Hi All,

I'm looking to use an old HTC phone as a GPS tracker. It will have a PAYG SIM in. Basically I want to use it to track groups of students who are walking unsupervised and be able to find them in case of getting lost. I've tried a couple of dedicated GPS tracker gadgets but they are very unreliable and very difficult to set up etc.

I don't want it to be a real time tracker as this will drain battery life very quickly. All I want is to request a GPS location (by calling or texting the phone) and get a coordinate back.

Does anyone know of an app that can do this?

Well Tasker has the ability to send coordinates when it receives an sms. However, I don't think you'd be able to install it on every single student's phone. Otherwise, i'm not sure there is an app to do exactly what you're requesting (if i'm understanding correctly). Sorry

I wouldn't need to install it on every students phone. I'd give each group an old phone with a PAYG SIM in it. That may work then, thanks.

Is there any chance you could instruct me on how to set this up? I've never used Tasker before.

Cerberus will allow you locate a phone with SMS. You can use it for 5 phones, how many do you need it for? It's not free but it's a really nice app, there is also a companion app.

Would only need it for 2, maybe 3 phones.

I use where's my droid there is a free and paid version. You can. Send SMS for tracking as well as calls or online. Works great for me!
