Root GPS will not fix.

I have updated to JellyBean via CWM SO far everything has been going great. Except for the caution triangle on boot. ON now I notice this GPS will not fix.. it takes a long time, if at all it fixes. I have tried GPS test. had the phone outside.. everything.. Why is this happening? Any insight?

Thanks.

I was really excited to get JB. I, too, upgraded through CWM using zjones' JB ROM. I ran into some performance issues, which I believe I was able to resolve by doing a factory reset.

However, the one problem I couldn't resolve, or live with, was that the GPS was no longer functional. I use the GPS functionality all the time for navigation and for logging the distance of my morning walks. The Jellybean update isn't worth it for me if the GPS won't work. I've wasted hours now between all the time I've been spending in CWM and Titanium Backup and RootExplorer, trying to find a way to get it all working, but I've given up for the moment and gone back to ICS.

Please let me know if you (or anyone else) manages to find a solution to this.

Thank you! I am going bavk to ICS for now. GPS is a must have for me. Hope too see more roms for this. WIll also Start testing, and coding myself.

I had the GPS not locking on problem the first time I used it after upgrading to JB. It eventually locked on after about 2 hours when I moved it into a clear area and didn't move it around. It would not lock on in the moving car which was a problem at the time. Now it is working normally and lock on times are normal. I'm guessing that the satellite ephemeris was lost or screwed up or something, and it had to download it again, but I thought that would never take more than 15 or 20 min to acquire.

I tried it after a factory reset and it still wouldn't lock. I think I got it to lock once during my 35 minute walk. I then went back to ICS and it was able to lock within less than 30 seconds and was able to easily track my position during my entire walk. I'd love to find out how to have both working, but if I have to choose, I want my GPS working. That's a very big part of what I love about having a smart phone.

Yeah, something is not right about the GPS software since the JB update. I get lock and then randomly it drops and endlessly tries to fix again. I downloaded an app calls GPS Status and it shows it's picking up Sat signals but doesn't get a fix. I've seen it get a fix while I was driving then next thing you know it's gone again.

Edit: I'm checking around some things, can someone who has ICS on their phone and working GPS post the contents of your /etc/gps.conf file? I want to compare.

madmikess,

I'm currently on stock ICS and here are the four lines in my /etc/gps.conf file:

NTP_SERVER=xtra1.gpsonextra.net
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

Ok, that's a bit different than what was showing in my own GPS.conf file in JB. There are a few extra lines. But since posting I had an issue that caused me to have to wipe and flash again. All I did was edit the gps.conf file and save it and then I couldn't boot back up again, suck at the samsung animation. Damn picky phone. I had made other changes without a problem so I don't know why it pulled it this time. I'm going to try and change my gps.conf to what the ICS conf file has and see what happens.

Edit:
For those that want to know, this is what mine showed:

XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

# GPS Capabilities bit mask
# SCHEDULING = 1
# MSB = 2
# MSA = 4
# ULP = 0x20
# ON_DEMAND_TIME = 0x10
# default = MSA | MSB | SCHEDULING | ULP
CAPABILITIES=0x17

I think my fix is faster than it was before. I'd download GPS Test from the app store to see if that helps figure out what's going on. - sheureka

I restored my JB backup and tried FasterGPS. I still saw the same problem with GPS not working on JellyBean (installed using zjones' ROM). So, I went back to my ICS backup.

Does it obtain and hold lock all the time? I could get mine to grab lock but it would drop it sometimes immediately and sometimes after like half an hour. On ICS it never drops lock unless it truly loses signal.

It didn't immediately drop. I can't assure you that it won't stop in like half an hour, but it was working the few minutes I was testing it.

Make an nandroid of your current setup and give this a go in jellybean.
