Help Green squares flashing across screen?

porcelain

Newbie
Little green squares have started appearing on the screen of my phone. They occur in the exact same spot every time. They are closer to the right side of the screen and start from around the middle of the screen and extend all the way down to the bottom where the back and home icons are. The green squares appear whenever I turn the screen on or off. They also appear whenever I open my photo gallery or pull down the notification bar.

Any idea what could be causing this? I did some searching about green squares appearing on screens and it seems like it might be a graphics issue? I'd really hate to have to get a replacement phone...

Also... I updated some apps last night and the problem just started this morning. I doubt that could be the cause, right?

Edit: The green squares turn light pink on the white screen of WhatsApp and the squares stay on the screen and move instead of disappearing. I had the app open for a minute while I was typing messages and the squares ultimately went away and didn't come back when I turned the screen off. But I'm sure they'll come back in a little while.

I wonder if you've impacted the screen in those areas, causing dead pixels. Do you keep your phone in a tight pocket, or with other objects? ...etc..

Nope. :\ I never put the phone in my pocket. I keep it in the cell phone pocket in my purse when I'm out, but nothing presses against it then.

does a screen capture show the squares? try to get them to appear, and when they do hold power and volume down...the screen capture will appear in the gallery.

in my backwords thinking...a screencapture would capture anything going on with the system and would NOT capture phisical screen defects or manufacturer defects.
so if the screen cap shows the squares, it is a software issue and a factory data reset should correct the problem (it was probably one of the apps you just updated) if it does not show the problem, it is probably a hardware issue.

either way, it is not normal and should be fixed quickly. neither one is something to be overlooked b/c a hardware issue will only get worse, and an OS issue will also, only get worse.

The squares don't show up in a screenshot. So, if it's like you said, I guess it's a hardware issue then.

They sometimes come and go. If I have the screen on for a while if I'm texting, the squares won't reappear for a while. I turned the phone off for a half-hour and they haven't reappeared yet, but they'll probably come back.

I guess my only option now is to get a replacement from Verizon. :\

Update: The squares are still appearing on my screen at random times. However, they aren't there constantly. I went all morning without any issues. Since I'm still not sure what exactly is the cause, I'm going to wait and see how the phone behaves over the next few days.

I don't expect it to go away, but I'm trying to hold off on getting a replacement. It doesn't sound like people had good luck with the refurbished phones Verizon sent them...

Well the thing is, you aren't having good luck with your current phone!

You might as well bite the bullet and get it exchanged before it possibly gets worse.

Sometimes on computers, green blocks on the screen mean the graphics processor is dying. It may possibly just be defective.

Hey guys
I am wondering if anyone has seen this issue posted anywhere else, and if anyone has any kind of definitive answer?
I just flashed back to stock and relocked my Gnex because of something similar.
Unfortunately these steps solved nothing.
Every time I wake up the device the screen flashes green before displaying the lock screen.
I really don't wanna get a replacement, but I really really don't want my graphics card to crash making it next to impossible to un-root and re-lock.
ideas?

[BUMP] After flashing back to my ROM of choice AOKP M5 the flicker of green at wake up actually went away, hurray! But now it came back and worse, what to do? Anyone? Ideas?

Ummm... try the screenshot diagnosis above, then talk to your phone provider for a replacement if it's hardware related? :D
