GRJ90 Update info 7/25/11

I must admit, the update (which I installed manually, thanks for taking your sweet time, google!) has definitely increased my speeds on both 3G and 4G. Wifi is pretty much the same as before updating.

However, the loss of tethering seriously blows goats. I don't want to root (namely because it confuses the S&$T outta me) but I just may have to. I would love to be able to tether 4G data speeds to my laptop and/or tablet.

Glad to hear the update helped your data connections!

Have you considered the Easy Tether app?? If not, check it out.

I got my Nesus S 4g on May 9th. And I just got the update notice this morning when I looked at my phone.

Well I did it. As I posted on another thread. Thought twice about NOT doing it. Loss of Hot Spot. I did lose hot spot function. It still sends out signal and lap top connects. But no data transfer!!!!

Good news is my signal seems stronger on internet data. At home, use to get zero bars but still get data at a veeerry slow speed. Now one to two bars at a surprising much faster speed.

Since I really did not have use for the hot spot, other then when traveling or emergencies. I guess this is a good trade off.

Still pissed that they gave it to us then took it away.
But we do have options!!

Hope this helps.

Just did the update today. I have noticed that the signal is definitely stronger. 3G data speeds have doubled. Before the update, I would get about .5 megs/sec downloads... Now I'm getting just over 1 meg/sec downloads, and even better when tethered to a laptop. :) (can't test 4G here)

Its been a GOOD update for me!!

Benchase7, what do you mean by "even better when tethered to a laptop"
I didn't try tethered connection to my laptop. Does that still work after the update?

I firmly believe that 90% of the impetus behind sending out this update was to take away the free tethering. They knew they were losing dollars by giving away this highly desired functionality and wanted to charge for it. All of the other stuff they mentioned in the update was hype in my opinion. My speeds may have increased moderately but I really dont think it is significant enough to talk about. Funny how in the press release that I read they said absolutely nothing about the loss of free tethering. I believe thats because they didnt want people to know they would lose tethering and then not update just to keep it. Having said all of this, I am still happy with this phone and believe they will continue to do things to make it better.

No, the tether feature does not work after the update, at least from what I hear, I haven't tried it. It sounds like you have to pay or root to get it to work now.
I use an app called EasyTether (in the market, $10) and it allows you to tether via USB cable. I was saying that when I tether, the data speeds seem even faster then when not tethering.

Just applied the update, but honestly, before the update my phone seemed about as good reception-wise as my Evo with CM7 RC1 did. 4G is 2500mhz, and generally blows when it comes to propagation and building penetration. If you guys are new to Sprint, that may have thrown you off. Basically 4G barely works in buildings, no matter what.

Also, stock Android, much like Cyanogen, shows very low bars for reception compared to a stock Sprint phone, even though the dBa are the same. My phone's reception is almost identical to my Evo's, if not just slightly worse (Samsung's have never been the best at reception).

I just got the update, so I'll report back if I have better data/reception.

Just got the update this morning as well. I guess i'll compare it to cleaning my air filter in my car...you know its a good thing to do, even though you don't necessarily feel any "gains".

For the non car peeps out there, it means it updated but doesn't feel like it's done too much or affected signal strength.

That being said, no complaints really because it was working just fine before, and I wasn't tethering regardless.

Well I got some good news for me anyway. At first I did not see any real change after the update. But now I do.. I Drive a Ford with SYNC system and my BT before the update would always disconnect if I had WiFi on. That was a PITA. But today after I paired it up with WiFi on no more disconnect. Woo Hoo.

I'm with you on this one. I was upset that GRJ90 no longer allows for it. I'm considering flashing back to GRJ22 or rooting. Any recommendations?

It doesn't have zoom as it is the default, vanilla, android version of the camera application. Other phones you have had were ones that were tailored and modified to that manufacturer. But being a Nexus, it's goal is to be clear of manufacturer modifications to Android, and clear of Cell Carrier modifications to the Android OS. I have found some apps, I have played with them, but I haven't tried any zoom features out yet. I'll let you know if I do and if any are good. The one feature I miss compared to my Vibrant was the ability to touch to pre-focus the image. But it's ok, I have learned how to use this camera quite well, and I like it a lot better. The night mode takes good pictures as the Vibrant did without the flash. I definitely think this camera is better, however, the video is something that is definitely lacking of any HD, I do miss the 720p HD from the Vibrant.
