I have Handcent & the defualt app for text messaging and was wondering if it's possible to send a "group text" to people. I know I can add more recipiants but I was looking for something like being able to create a group such as "people from work", "family" etc. and then just select that group of people and it would send the message to all of them instead of having to try and add 10 or 11 recipiants every time I send a message.

Thanks

i wish there was a way to create a message and click on the names instead of adding them. they need a simpler way of adding names to a text

In Handcent... when you have your list of threads up.. click the compose button (upper left hand corner.. look like a page with the corner turned down and a pencil).. then click the green plus sign in the upper right corner.. you should have tabs at the top... contact, group and recent.. if you have groups already made in your contact list.. you should be able to click the group tab and select whatever groups you have in there. I also use aContacts as my contact list... but I don't think that makes a difference, but I like it better than the stock.. more options. Hope that helps :D

Thanks !
Later i work today I will mess with that. I noticed that last night and was going to post and ask how to "star" contacts to set them up as a "group". I see it will allow me 2 "starred in groups" and a contact "system group: my contacts". I will figure it out in work.

ok... played with my phone for a bit.. I couldn't find a way to add people to a group or creat a group with the stock contact book (except adding them to favorites.. which is the "star" that you mentioned. I think the "system group: my contacts" is basically everyone in your contacts) I have actually used a few different contact books from the market... phonebook, contacts evolved, aContacts, etc... I decided on aContacts after playing with them for a while... but you can check them all out if you want to. I'm pretty sure that if you make groups with any of these programs, the stock contact book will actually recognize the groups and they do automatically transfer between the different contact books if you switch. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I found it easier to add and manage groups on the gmail web site contact page. It will sync them to your phone. The group will then show up in handicent on the group tab.

duh... thanks Mike... I always forget that you can edit contacts online with your Google account. Sometimes I get to thinking so hard about making a solution that the simple things slip my mind... lol.

Is there a way to not add someone to your contacts list when you reply to someone with gmail ? I think everytime I send or reply to an email it puts the persons email address in my contacts.

You can download the app "groupy" from the marketplace for free which allows you to edit those system groups directly on the phone by selecting the contacts you want and moving them to the certain group. Basically a copy and paste method.

What Android is really lacking is Smashtalk. Smashtalk is patent-pending technology that allows for text users to benefit from "Reply-All" functionality without any change of usage behavior. Best of all, Smashtalk embedded into Android would allow any of the SMS applications mentioned in previous posts to have access to this technology.

Getting the attention of Andy Rubin @ Google has been more than challenging. Smashtalk would make Android a better communication tool that the iPhone, BB or WinPhone.

Imagine how the world of text messaging would change if every Android device supported text messaging with "Reply-All" functionality and had full compatibility with non-Smashtalk devices. www.smashtalk.net
