Help GS2 update Fail

I have a Virgin Mobile (USA) GS2. I just tried updating from Android 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. I tried using the general updater, not Kies to do the update, which I downlaoded from the Samsung site. At some point the USB connection was lost (Windows 7 computer) and now the screen on the phone says
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
So, I downloaded Kies and it won't connect to my phone. I looked at the "Emergency Firmware Recovery" and my phone is not there.
Am I totally hosed?
Thanks.

sheeesh!!
I really envy you guys who get a smooth upgrade.

I tried Keis. it won't recognize the phone. just sits there with the progress wheel spinning.

I downloaded the tool from Samsung. which apparently is a Keis package also. Then went to firmware upgrade and input my phone data (they could have told me which form of MEID to input, but I fumbled through to the Allpha version.

Then I get a message "can't verify your information??

Phone from Radio Shack. Is that tied in somehow??

At least "Ice Cream Sandwich" is a pretty good ROM.

I swear!! I don't know what has become of my skills.

Thanks for any help or hints.

I temporarily retract my previous rant.

I couldn't find the actual updater program. Upon another look it was there and I am running it (trying to anyways) even as we speak.

I MAY be part of the problem.

The Odin tool seems to have worked. The phone is rebooting now. Thank you for your patience with an old coot.

Seems to be working fine. PHEW!!!
