GS3 Case discussion thread

Anybody have a good recommendation for a case for the blue version? I want something fairly minimal (not bulky) and I'd prefer something "clearer" to let the blue show through. Most cases I'm seeing only show what it looks like in white, which doesn't help me :) Thanks!

You should scroll through again.....

If you go clear, you will be giving up protection. Personally additional protection is more important to me than being able to see the back of the phone, but YMMV :)

I also preferred the darker color for the front due to lower reflections in bright light.

I personally went with the following from Amazon described here for $20 (where I also show a clear case, but in white) :

A similar case for ~$12 shipped is here.

I prefer dual layer cases which provide additional protection with relatively minimal bulk.

For me, protection isn't as important, I'm very careful with my devices, so I just need something to mainly keep it from getting scratched up sitting in my car or when I plunk it down on the bar. The most I've dropped my current phone over the last 2+ years is off the couch onto the carpet.

Then just scroll through this thread.....

There are lots examples of clear/translucent cases (some with blue phones and others in white).

Samsung Genuine Flip Case?

This case seemed like a good idea to me, partly because it preserves the phone's thinness, but then I read that it interferes with the camera. Anybody know if that's true? Any other disadvantages (other than price)?
Thanks for your advice.

Holy cow, I wish I would have thought to read through this thread before I wrote my post #sarcasm

I think I saw one case similar to what I'm looking for pictured on a blue phone in the links you posted. The last 2 just link back to the same page my post is on...

To me the case would only interfere with the camera if you flipped it all the way back, no?

I don't believe the cutouts bother the flash or anything like that.

They each link back to a particular post, I didn't verify if they were on separate pages ;)

In the end, there are *lots* of choices, but no right one for everyone. Some people (like me) opted to go with a cheapo case until they settled on a more expensive one they liked. In my case, I happened to buy both before I even got my phone (still waiting).

Others have more cases than shoes :p

BTW, most people I know at the end of theads *do not* wade through the previous posts, even if it is just to look at the pictures :)

The first thing that strikes me about that type of phone is that it would be awkward to hold while taking pictures and might interfere depending on the angle of the flap and the lighting (e.g. shadows if light is behind you), not the cutouts.

Well, like I said, when I click on the last 2, they just come back to this page. Sorry, I don't mean to call you out, it just ticks me off when people post the classic "read back through the thread" responses - I did read through it, a few times, and had I found what I was looking for, I wouldn't have posted.

If there is anyone who has a blue version of the phone and has a case they like and hasn't done so yet, please feel free to share a pic or three.

I have always used the SEIDIO Active Case it comes in like 5 colors and excellent protection. Not to change the subject but I use the Smiley Androids and the ones on the Galaxy 3 just aren't right, looks as if the were run over by a TRUCK.

Then state ones you *did* look at but didn't like (yes, there are at least a couple of blue ones listed in the *links* I posted), then it might have been more obvious that you actually looked through the thread. It goes both ways:confused:.

I just ordered the active case combo from seidio. I've used the surface combo with my EVO the past two years and have loved it, but this galaxy s3 is so thin, I figure I can put that active case on there and the thickness won't bother me like it did on the evo (which is why I switched from the active to the surface on my EVO, it was really thick on the EVO)

just got my Seidio Surface as well. the lip is great at protecting the curved glass. The cut down size of the Steinheil Ultra Nano ends up being right at the edge of the Surface, so perfect.

I dropped my SGS2 in a surface case, face down from waist high to smooth concrete. I was chasing our 2 yr old around a store and just missed my holster. Anyway, it bounced corner to corner, face down about 3 times. No damage.

They do feel slippery at first, but after you use them alittle, they get a more grippy.

Don't worry anyone about it being slippery. It's hard to explain, but it is kind of a smooth rubbery, very secure in your hand, yet slides easily out of your pocket. Doesn't attract lint at all and dust wipes right off.

One thing I like as I mentioned earlier is that it feels like it's part of the phone giving the whole phone a solid feel, not a wrapped up feel.

I ordered this case as well had it on my captivate for about a good year and a half. I don't mind my phone being a little thicker for the extra protection.

I was going to offer you a phone case suggestion but it looks like if the answer isn't to your liking you will bite my head off.

Here's a Few suggestions:

1. In your original question it would help if you actually state that you've looked through the previous posts in that thread and didn't find your answer. Laptopquestion is right when he says that some (Most?) people don't bother to read through the previous posts.

2. When someone goes through all of the trouble of providing you with an answer with 5 links in them maybe you could manage to actually show a little gratitude instead of angry sarcasm. Laptopquestion spent at least a few minutes of his time scrolling back through this thread copying links to insert into his answer to you. It may have not worked out perfectly for you but that hardly seems like it warranted 2 somewhat negative responses from you.

3. If this thread doesn't offer you what you're looking for there are other resources. How about doing what most other people do and spend an hour (Or 4) scrolling through all of the "Galaxy S3 cases" (Search) on Amazon and Ebay. You'll be so busy looking at cases you won't have time to snap at people trying to help you.

I've read the entire thread and seen a bewildering array of cases! About the only thing left I would question goes out to those who have (FINALLY! ) :) received their shiny new S3 ....... I'd like to know about the "pocket friendly" aspect of any of the "grippy" style of cases as you use them. As an example, I just read above that the Seido Surface pulls easily from a pocket.

My S3 is due to ship this week and its time to get off the fence, as it were, and order a case. I prefer one I can get on Amazon (Prime if possible). I'm leaning toward a TPU case or one styled that way which would have good grip for my incessantly dry fingers, yet come easily from my pocket. (I remember the days of the extra effort it took to slide a Palm Graphite PDA out of its slip case, and how many times I dropped it doing so - no Gorilla Glass back then - dealt with broken displays more than once.)

I've also noticed some case+S3 pics showing an apparently curved back on the phone, yet others look very flat.

If you go clear, you will be giving up protection.

Here's a transparent TPU case that appears to be very clear. But it's hard to tell from the picture. With this particular case in mind, I have to disagree with your statement above. I think TPU provides excellent protection from falls. I've had one on my DroidX for almost 2 years and it's survived some nasty falls onto concrete/asphalt on far too many occasions. Combined with a Steinheil screen protector there isn't a scratch, dent or mark on it anywhere. TPU is the perfect case material in my opinion. It's relatively thin but has just the right density to absorb impact while not being so soft that it eventually sags or pulls off too easily. Dirt cheap too...Which fits right in with my budget.:)

I prefer dual layer cases which provide additional protection with relatively minimal bulk.

I agree that a dual layer case can provide additional protection but they are usually more bulky than a single layer of TPU. I've never seen any comparison tests done but I would guess that for the average fall to concrete/asphalt from a height of 3' to 5' or 6' the results would be similar between a double layer case and a single layer TPU case that wraps all the way around the edges of a phone and has a lip sticking up in front. Kinda like the idea that a foot of steel doesn't provide any more practical protection from a bullet than 6" of steel does. As I said, I've never seen any actual physical comparisons of this before so I'm just guessing based on how tough my TPU case has been and from the experience of some family members and a few friends.

That being said, I happen to have a couple of dual layer cases for my (As yet undelivered :( ) SGS3 and they not only look cool but also look like they could help a phone survive a higher fall, like from the top of a roof if I were in construction. In reference to my analogy above, this would be like an armor piercing anti-tank missile penetrating the 6" steel but not the 12" steel. ;) For those interested I posted links to cases I have ordered including the 2 dual layer cases in post #463 on page 12 of this thread.

How is the inside of the case? The outside seems to have a rough texture. Is the inside of the case which rests against the phone rough as well? to the point where it will scuff up the back plate?

It's the same texture on the inside. I don't think it's rough enough for it to scratch the back. It fits snug so it won't move around. Had it for a few days and so far nothing.

Since the phone is curved, does the Surface case follow the countour and fit flush all the way around

You're right, I apologize. I realize a lot of people don't read through long threads before posting a question. However, I did read through this one a few times, and spent a couple of hours on Amazon looking, etc. and while I have found cases that seem like they might be what I'm looking for, very very few have had real world photos of them on the blue phone.

As I thought about it, I realized I'm wasting way too much time looking for the "perfect" case for a phone I'm 50/50 on whether or not I'm even going to keep once I get it. I'm just going to get the cheapest thing that might work until I decide if I want to keep the phone -then I'll look for something better. I might even end up with a few cases, and one of those would be something with a bit more protection for when I'm out in the woods with it or I toss it in my backpack or golf bag. That Rock quicksand case that was posted looks pretty cool too, I love the look of the grey one on the blue phone. But first things first... I need to make sure I'm going to keep this phone before I waste any more time/money on cases for it.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. It might not have seemed like it at the time, but I do appreciate you taking the time to try and find a few suggestions for me!
