GS3 Case discussion thread

I don't know why you say this. It seems obvious to me that silicone will offer high impact protection because of its elasticity.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying it seems to go against my intuitive understanding of material properties.

well, from what ive read in this thread, peoples personal experience seems to back up what i said. also, perhaps if they made particularly thick silicone cases, they might provide high impact protection, but as they are now, much of the force from a fall will be transferred straight through the case into the phone. whereas a stiffer case made out of TPU or hard plastic will direct more of the force around the phone, much like the way the frame of a car protects the people inside it.

Providing a direct link would make it easier for others to provide relevant feedback....

I found the case from ebay. Haven't found any kind of review or feedback on it. Was hoping someone on here may have already tried it.

I'm thinking it's similar to the iphone Batt/Cases which were pretty nice when you had to travel and needed that extra batt juice.

The white ones are out so are the plum for three commuter. I waited on three night sky for a month and finally canceled my order. Good luck

Really???
I ordered a white commuter from Amazon.com and my order is shipping soon. I don't remember seeing an "out of stock" message...

Hopefully I got one... amazon.com are reporting that it is out now. But other sellers have it.

Same, ordered a white the other day and it said it was in stock. I've had good luck with Amazon being truthful about stock, so I'm thinking they might have some on hand. (Watch, with that comment I just probably jinxed myself...)

Woo-hoo!
My order shipped. Should be here this weekend!

So, after a few weeks using my SG Maxx case, I find it is going growing on me. The volume and power buttons are easy to push and i am getting used to the feel of the case. The back and menu buttons can be tricky to hit by times due to the design. The case protects well, phone dropped and landed straight on its side and was no worse for it. I did not use the screen protector that came with it, i have an xtreme guard instead. I may cancel my otterbox defender order.

Sorry if this has been addressed....I'll own up to not having read all 26 pages of the thread.

Is a case for the S3 really necessary? I know the gorrilla glass is tough stuff. Is the case mostly for impact protection in case it's dropped? Will a cheap case provide that?

No way! So do I!

Benny

Wow - that's crazy!

If only there was some place where we, and others like us, could get together to discuss our views on things like this. A "forum" if you will. Now I don't know you and I probably don't live in the same city as you, so it probably makes more sense if our "forum" were linked together via computer which would make it easier for us to compare notes. Hmmmm. Gotta think on this one for a bit. :hmmmm2:

And maybe if there was such a "forum" then others who approached our virtual conversation looking for similar information would have a way to get the benefit of our past conversations.....perhaps our conversations could be saved and then would be readable by others.

Well, one can only dream I guess. Maybe in the future some smart person will design such a system.

Until then......glad to hear you have a case that you like. I like mine too! Take care my friend! :D

Up to you. GG is tough in terms of being scratch-resistant (but not proof) but it will crack like any other glass. A cheap case likely provides equivalent protection given a certain form factor (ie a cheap TPU case of a certain thickness that costs $5 probably is similar to a $25 branded funky-looking TPU case of the same thickness.

Cases add some tactile benefit since the GS3 is pretty slippery on the glossy back. They also protect that back from scratches and give people another way to personalize their phone. Case design is very subjective person to person so you sorta gotta decide what looks good to you.

I first purchased the case mate phantom because I was getting tired of waiting for the otterbox defender in white to become available. I had left my 2 s3's sitting in a box until a case that we wanted (otterbox defender) was available. I received my case mate first and first impressions was it was a nice case. Built in screen protection was what I was looking for and protection of the phone. I didn't really need the clip since I normally carry it in my purse.

My husband received the otterbox defender case and between the two the otterbox was less bulky. Then just last week I had a need to use the clip and what I found was if you clip the phone into the clip facing in the clip will catch the earphone flap. The only way to avoid this is to clip the phone in with the screen facing out. Not an option for me.

I received finally the otterbox defender in white/grey on Friday and it was what I really wanted. I have the phone in white and I like the look more stream line and a nicer feel. I also did not like the bar that went across the top of the phone where the Samsung name was on the casemate. I felt it interfered with the info bar when trying to swipe it down. I also felt it took away from the look of the phone. Just my opinion.

I'm still going strong with my Case Mate Barely There. After reading this thread and a few others, I purchased a Rock Quicksand, an Elago Breathe and an iSkin Vibe. I prefer the Barely There to all of them. Looking at the Spigen ultra thin air for when this case gets too chipped/scratched for everyday use.

Lost the bid on the black gameboy case but i ended up buying two cases via Amazon.com I feel these should hold me til the Nightsky commuter otterbox is released.

Mind you both of these are cheap, but you can't go wrong i spent Under $10.00 for both

Amazon.com: Ace Skull Hard Case Snap On Cover For Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300, 1747 (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon): Cell Phones & Accessories

A case is only necessary if you drop the phone the wrong way. Or if you want to customize your phone.

I went naked with the iPhone 4, aside from a felt sleeve. My OG droid I had was as tough as it was buggy. A case for that was totally pointless. This, feels delicate. The phone is also big enough and slippery enough where I don't feel like I get a good grip on it. I can see myself dropping it in a rush when I am getting out of my car or something. I'd feel more comfortable with an otterbox. When friends say an otterboxed iPhone can put up with two kids treating it like a tonka toy, I'm sold.

thanks , i just bought them both on impulse, i have my s3 naked but omg i love these cases , i am very careful with my phones so i only need minimal protection against accidentaly putting the phone down too fast on the table or forgetting its faced down, my Droid X survived with zero scratches thanks to a cheap silicon case like those, my S3 will look so pro as a gameboy and that dark one its cool too if i ever get bored of the game boy look :p

I've heard otterboxes are great, but how thick are they? I love how thin this phone is an how easy it fits in a pocket.

Also, what is the difference between the defender and commuter. I see the defender has some kind of built in screen protector...is that it?

I think the defender is thicker, has the built in screen protector, and has a belt holster.

I love how thin the phone is too, but I don't feel like I ever really get a secure grip on it and I can easily see myself dropping it if I don't pay attention.

I have both cases. I use the Defender, the wife has the Commuter. The main difference between the two are that Defender has a plastic inner-shell that that goes around the phone (2 pieces that snap together), and the top piece does have the built-in sceen protector. Then a rubberized outer-shell goes around the plastic covering the sides and the back of the phone. None of the plastic is exposed, save for part of the area that surrounds the screen. The Defender also has a holster while the Commuter does not.

The Commuter has a rubberized inner-shell that covers the phone like a typical TPU case, but not quite as thick and is flimsier by comparison. The inner-shell is then surrounded by a hard plastic outer-shell. The corners of the rubberized inner-shell are exposed, however they are reinforced or "cushioned", so to speak, for impact absorption.

The Defender makes the phone feel heavier vs. the Commuter, and the Defender also makes the phone feel 3 times the size. The Commuter feels just right to me, although I have large hands.

Here's some comparison pics that shows the thickness of each case (sorry, I'm not a photographer).
