Help [GSM] Update to 4.0.4 fails, need help

MassacrMan

Android Enthusiast
My GSM Galaxy Nexus originally came with a 4.0.1 ROM called Yakjuxe, I then flashed the 4.0.2 image from Google and then received the 4.0.4 update OTA.

However, when I install the 4.0.4 update it gives me the dead android with a red exclamation point over him. I do not know why the update fails as it does not show any error message but this picture. My phone restarts soon after and indeed remains on 4.0.2.

Can any of you help me diagnose and fix my issue? I really want to update to 4.0.4 as well as future updates from Google.

I have factory reset my phone and re-attempted the update, same result occurs as I described earlier. I suspect the issue may be that my phone is still running the radio it came with originally. If so, could someone help me through flashing the correct radio?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your helpful replies.

Someone else can feel free to correct me, but I'll take a good SWAG here and explain why I think you're having issues:

You said that you were on a custom ROM, and you're trying to install an OTA that updates the stock software. Well, a lot of the stock software isn't there anymore to update! It was replaced with the new Yakjuxe operating system. Now you did indicate that the 4.0.2 image took, but I'm not sure that you're really back on a pure stock 4.0.2 or if you just really lucked out and successfully laid it on top of the 4.0.1 custom ROM. Did you do a full wipe when installing the 4.0.2 update?

It seems to me that the phone may be having some serious software conflicts; the 4.0.4 OTA is trying to install, but is unsuccessful because of the residual ROM you had installed. It's apples and oranges from my point of view.

You didn't indicate in your post whether you wiped the phone and flashed it back to full stock before this all happened. If you didn't, then there is still a Yakjuxe ROM driving everything, with some 4.0.2 Google mixed in. Stirring in a little 4.0.4 OTA could result in a catastrophic conflict. That may be why the phone is trying to install it, but ultimately rejecting it.

We need more information here, then. Did you wipe the phone and then flash the 4.0.2 from Google? Are you on straight stock again?

OP would you mind putting [gsm] in the title of your thread? Thank you :)

also we may need to move this to the All Things Root section.

I did indeed wipe the phone when installing the 4.0.2 update. After booting up the phone went through the first time setup like the phone was brand new.

Is there some way to tell if your suspicions are indeed correct or not?

I do not experience getting stuck on the Google page, it goes past that to actually installing the update before the update fails and shows the dead android with the red exclamation point floating over him.

Perhaps I will try manually installing 4.0.4 and hope OTAs after that work correctly. Otherwise I will be forced to manually update every time.

Sorry for the double post again, but I have successfully manually flashed Android 4.0.4 IMM76I along with it's radio and bootloader. Meaning this time I should be COMPLETELY stock now, so when the next OTA comes along from Google for 4.0.5/6/what-have-you I should be able to install with no issues.

I bought My Galaxy Nexus GSM used on Ebay! Came in great shape and everything! But I was wondering why it was still on Android 4.0.2! So I did my research and found out that mine wasn't the "International" GSM version.. Official Google firmware 4.0.4 Yakju{the phone Google directly updates!!). I had the yakjuxw firmware(Samsung variant! which means Samsung is in controll on updating the phone.. YIKES!!!!!) It was no wonder why my phone was still stuck on Android 4.0.2 lol.

I first downloaded this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lbGVjdHJpY3NoZWVwLmFzaSJd

To see what version of Galaxy Nexus I had(once u run the app, its under, System/Buildinfos/Product:). If you don't have Yakju, then it's not the one Google updates directly.

So then I followed this guide here and successfully installed the official Google firmware, Yakju 4.0.4! :)

Guide to Update Samsung Galaxy Nexus (YAKJUXW) to Android 4.0.4 and Get future Updates from Google

Its pretty simple for noobs like me hahaha! The hardest part is just getting the right drivers. Back up your device cuz one you unlock the bootloader.. it deletes everything.

Happy flashing!!
