Help GT540 not syncing with Google

Only two of the contacts on my phone will sync with Google contacts. I'm obviously missing something that it seems everybody else knows, but I would sure appreciate an idea of what I'm doing wrong. I tried to sync to PC Suite IV, but with the same result. Is the reason because the majority of my contacts reside on my SIM card?
