Root [Guide] Easily Remove System apps on rooted Stock ROMS (updated 31st June 2011)

what if I don't have a custom ROM added. I have a US Cellular Desire. I just rooted my phone earlier tonight and haven't put a new ROM onto it since I can't find anything real stable yet. Can I still delete the bloatware off my phone? If so, how would I go about it?

You can either follow this guide ir look into s-off which you flash. There.us a thread about it in this rooting forum. It's by teppic74.

sorry for the amateur question, but how would I be able to follow this guide..since I don't think I have a ROM Manager to launch?

Rom manager is an app from the market.

This guide is not very new. All you need is clockworkmod recovery, which previously you needed Rom manager to get into.

You just have to boot into recovery if you rooted using unrevoked

Turn off phone, connect usb hold vol down and power and you'll get to the boot loader. Use vol to navigate the menu to recovery and power to select it.

If you get a black screen with red triangle press vol up and power.

Now you should be in clockworkmos recovey.

so i got to the command prompt and made it to c:\Android-sdk-windows\tools. I try to type in the command including 'ADB Shell' I get the message 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Did I just extract the Android SDK to the wrong location?

well I downloaded the Android-SDK-Windows file and sent it to the mentioned location but i can't find the specific file you mentioned (adb.exe)

I suspect it will, but would this method work for my issue?

I just upgraded to CM6.1RC1 and terminal won't launch, nor will it update...I get "error launching activity" and "Installation unsuccessful" respectively.

Someone suggested to remove Terminal via adb and then install it fresh...

Then I found this..

Like everything, you can read too much sometimes and end up doubting yourself :D

Yes bit there is an easier way for you. When you flash a Rom, /system is completely overwriten by what is in the roms /system folder in the zip.

Do open the zip either I. Winrar on pc or astro om phone, delete .apk from system and the flash the Rom again.

It won't affect data at all. No wipe needed

Ah..I didn't realise it wiped system...I thought it replaced existing stuff and left the others there

I will do that then I think...sounds considerably easier :D

It's what I do ;)

Yeah Rom over writes entire system partition but leaves data partition alone. Hence why when you upgrade Rom, user apps remain.

You cent update system apps from the market or anything.

To save space, user apps that dont get many updates you can put in system

Fantastic! Thx for making more space and dont have unused Apps on the phone :)
Where can i find this Quickoffice app in the List ??

Hiya Dan.
I was wondering, what is it about this persons set-up that allows him/her to delete apk's without adb?
Using either method, the odex might as well be deleted at the same time, right?

Loosely, is it,
apk for the app?
odex for the settings of the app?

Well nothing, because he couldn't from what I understand.

If you have S-off, apparently you can use root explorer to simply delete the .apk's

Personally, I just remove the apk's from the rom zip file on my sd card and reflash it.

This method now, really only any use if you have rooted your stock branded rom and wish to remove their apps without flashing a new rom.

Thanks for the real how to! There are many other threads on other forums that miss out the fact that you need to reboot in Recovery mode.

Not sure how relevant it is, or just a weirdism on my phone. Having deleted several apps and then wiped Dalvic I was down to about 1.5Mb free space on the phone. After panicking and looking around for a while and not finding anything I tried a reset and thankfully now have about 18 Mb free.

This thread over on XDA is quite useful with what to and what not to remove:

[WIP] /system/app APK's - Safe to remove list and functions - xda-developers

In the process I checked that Maps.apk doesnot seem to be installed, I removed Street(s?).apk thinking they may be related, but I still get a "Manual install is required" when trying to install Google Maps.

Any suggestions??
