Root GUIDE: From stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1

Do you guys think if I root my phone that I will be able to change all those mms setting on metro? Cause it's currently blocked.

Just a little confused about the order of operations listed.

This is what I gathered from the first post
1. A- pre-requisite Android SDK
2. I - Root phone
3. run All in One Root script

Or do I need to:
1. A- pre-requisite Android SDK
2. I - Root phone
3. II- Install Amon's Recovery Image
4. III - Install new rooted ROM
5. run All in One Root script

Thanks in advance.

All in One Root script does I, II, III automatically (ROM installed is eris21official-root). Or you can do them manually.

I couldn't get the script to work (probably user error), but was able to do everything manually.

This is going to sound silly but...

I ran the SDK setup and was able to d/l and install all of the available packages and drivers.

I did set the phone in usb debug mode.

Upon connecting my phone, I do not see the yellow ! in device manager. I do see Android USB Devices>My HTC. I'm going to assume that my drivers are up to date and will proceed to the next step.

Thanks

I would like to ask if rooting gives you full access of the device would it let me edit the 1xev-do parameter settings because I am currently blocked from editing some of the setting.

Is there a way to remove some of the home screens from my phone? I am using the "eris21official-root.zip" rom and have found that the 7 home screens is way too many. Its not a huge deal if not but it is kind of annoying.

Thanks,
char561

I followed the instructions step by step and have 2.1 running, my only question is how do I know if my phone is properly rooted? I have installed apps that require root access and they all hang when doing the 'su' command.

After typing the superuser command did you look at the phone? The phone should have the superuser permissions app pop up and ask if you want to allow superuser access to your computer command prompt.

I'm sorry char561, but can you give me a little more detailed instructions on how to do what you're saying?

Do I need to connect my phone to the PC and try and execute a command? I have a program on my phone called "Superuser Permissions", when I open it though it just shows "Superuser Permissions" in a gray bar along the top and then just a blank black screen.

Yes, connect your phone to your PC and open the command prompt and go to the go to the \tools\ directory of the Android SDK. then type "adb shell". you should see an icon that looks like "$". The type the command "su" which basically means your are trying to switch from a standard user to a super-user. after typing that the superuser permissions app should pop up on your phone asking if you want to allow superuser access to the computer. Click always allow and after doing that the "$" icon on your command prompt should switch to a "#". This means you have superuser or "rooted" access. After doing that you should no longer experience as many force closes when trying to run apps requiring superuser access.

i've got myself rooted, and just installed the wifi tether (freakin awesome). but before i started playing with uninstalling programs and all, i was trying to do a NAND backup and got an error on my screen:
"Error...Run "nandroid-mobile.sh" via adb!

is there something obvious i'm missing??

thanks

Can you post more info such as what rom you are running and what version and whatnot? If you want help fast come to the IRC help channel. There is always someone on there to help you.

Char561 just wanted to post and let you know that everything worked. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Had to remember to put my phone in USB Debugging mode as well.

I'm glad I could be of assistance. Sorry the explanation was so wordy and poorly formatted but I'm glad it worked.

I kept putting the root off in hopes that VZ would release it, but I finally rooted yesterday.

Grdlock, thank you sooooo much. Followed the tut, everything went just like you said, and 2.1 is damned awesome. Any questions I would have had were answered in the thread somewhere, so I'm glad I read it all before starting. Made everything that much easier.

Thanks to anyone that answered anyone else's questions.

And thanks again Grd!

@peanut no, if you put the leaked unrooted version on your phone you are out of luck until someone figures out how to root the leaked version.

Okay so I downloaded the SDK and I am not yet rooted. I looked for my device under the device manager but I do not see a yellow triangle. I am on XP. I do see Android USB Devices. Is that the same thing? Thanks in advance from a long time lurker. Thought I would finally register.
