No you do not haveto do all three in order to do the WiFi teather .....step one root the phone......iwould reccomend doing the recovery just cuz u can do nand backups and stuff plus that's what u use if you ever do want to flash a custom Rom....so root your phone do the recovery and PM me and ill see if I.can send you the teather file

Ok now I know this shouldnt be this hard, I cant even get past the pre-reqs.

7. Connect your phone via USB to your PC.
8. Right-click My Computer > Properties, and go to Device Manager. You should see a device with a yellow exclamation next to it, this is your phone (if you don't see it you probably forgot to enable USB debugging mode)
9. Right-click the device, select Update Driver. Browse to your Android SDK directory, and you should see a "USB Driver" folder in it now. If you don't, you forgot to download the USB Driver package when in "SDK Setup.exe". Select the driver in that folder.

When I get to step 9 the USB Driver folder is there but when I select it to install the computer responds "cannot install necessary software cannot be found". I have deleted out of SDK and then downloaded it again with the same results. OK What Gives??

Ok now I'm just annoyed. I cant even install the stupid USB Driver.

I have removed and reinstall SDK several times, each with the USB Driver. However each time I ask windows to install updated driver it tell says

CANNOT INSTALL HARDWARE
HARDWARE WAS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE WIZARD CANNOT FIND THE NECESSARY SOFTWARE.

ok so if i do step 1 and just root my phone that will work? i dont care if i lose all my info, i wrote everything down i have when i installed the 2.1ota. if i dont do the prereq and just do step 1 will that brick my phone or will it root it and just not save anything? is the sdk file just for saving stuff?

SDK is not for saving stuff. SDK stands for software development kit and it allows you to pretty much control your phone. There would be little point in rooting if you just put the file on your phone because there is not a lot you can do with root access without the developers kit and the recovery image (which you push using adb {android debug bridge} in the SDK)

To answer your question, it will not brick your phone and the only thing you will lose will be your apps and your contacts (which google backs up and as soon as you log into your phone it will restore)

Well I have spent the last 6 hours messing around and researching the whole process. I am sure everything is being done properly (USB Debugging, Downloaded the USB Driver Update with Android SDK, etc). Simply it comes down to the fact my computer doesnt recognize the driver in the USB Driver Folder, when i try to install the driver.

Any clue as to why??

I just got my eris and we want to root it so we can wifi tether. I am on a mac. I have placed the zip file on the sd card, but when I hold volume down and power I get to the screen but it never asked me to "push to activate" I get a bunch of lines saying no image and then just a menu. Do I continue to wait for it (I waited about a minute and nothing happened, ie never asked me to push anything). I am running 2.1 OTA. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

10. You can test to make sure everything is working by going to a command prompt, go to the \tools\ directory of the Android SDK, and type: "adb shell". If you see a "$" (or "#" if you're already rooted) sign you're good.

Where to I find a command prompt?

Yes it is. It took some time and some help from another person and me thinking I had installed the ota but it was the root. I was a little stressed for a min. Just got the recovery image done and now I'm going to download the ROM

i just just did it and it took awhile to work, but how do i know im rooted? when it started up, i had to start from scratch again like clicking english or spanish and setting my phone up like it was new, but how do i know for a fact its ROOTED?

I had this same problem. The fix was to wait a min in between each command... I hope this helps
