Root [GUIDE] How to Root the HTC One V

i am in hboot and have followed your directions exactly. but every single time it put in the fastboot command it says ''fastboot' is not recoginzed as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.'
i am located in C:\Users\Caroline\Android> ...
I tried the environment variable thing but again the same thing happened.
i don't know what i am doing wrong..

so i unlocked the boot loader and am now on the cwmrecovery.img part. it says when i try to extract it that winzip doesn't support .img unless its iso or something like that.. so i uninstalled winzip and tryed 7-z? nothing, still. Any advice?

you need to have the phone in fastboot, not hboot. you are getting the errors becasue the fastboot and adb utilities prolly think the phone is in the booted OS,since they do not recognize the hboot mode of the bootloader.

first of all, sorry i didnt realize you had worked past the post i quoted :o

if you are looking at a .img file, you do not need to extract it. an .img is what you need... you only need to use winzip or 7zip if you cannot naturally unzip the PxxxIMG file that contains the recovery image.(.img file)

I had assumed that since you were trying to extract the file you already had it downloaded.

What issues are you having downloading?

oh i am an idiot. i had it downloaded with no problems but the error message confused me.
now i am in the rooting stage. i have that file on my sd card and my sd card in my phone. when i press install from sd card it brings me to a black screen with a hat and circle with an error and squiggles around that. it hasnt moved from this page for fifteen minutes. is this page an error page? because it never told me to choose which file to install..

you can unlock the bootloader and flash/boot a recovery without an sd card. however you will need a method of flashing the superuser .zip file.

if the recomended recovery(i do not own this device) allows you to flash zip from emmc, then you can transfer and flash the superuser file from internal storage.

alternately, you could simply borrow an sd from a different device for the purpose of flashing superuser :)

i just realized i hadnt responded to this... i assume youve figured it out,but for others, pressing the power button in clockwork takes you back a menu,or if youre on the main menu,to the circle with the hat ;)

use the search softkey to select,or if the recovery is cw touch, just touch the menu option. :)

home softkey should take you to main menu, back arrow will also take you back a menu

The soft keys don't work on cwm for the cdma version. You will need to scroll all the way down to the bottom using the volume down button. Then press volume down again to loop back to the top, press volume up to loop to the bottom, press volume down to loop back to the top. You should now see a pop up at the bottom of your screen, something about menu and back buttons IIRC. Now you can use the power to select. Or you can install the TWRP touch recovery, which I prefer.

need some help... lol so i unlocked bootloader and im trying to root. now i can't seem to get recovery image for my CDMA HTC One V usa virgin mobile. :( sends to me to 404(page not found) error.

When you click on cwmrecovery.img to download the file, you get a 404 page. Does anyone have an alternate link? I'm stuck on this step.

Edit:I got passed it using: recovery-CWM-5.8.3.1-Build6.img

But now, When I am trying to root, I go back into HBOOT and select recovery and it gets stuck on the "HTC quietly brilliant" screen with this is red letters:

This build is for developmental purposes only. Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's Written Permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action.

Has anyone had this happen before? If so, how do I get past this screen? I let it sit for 30 minutes before just rebooting the phone.

Ryan, first make sure that you've downloaded the correct recovery for your device whether gsm or cdma. If your sure you flashed the right recovery, try 1) reflashing it or 2) flashing an older recovery know to work.

Hope that helps.

I am new to the rooting of a phone, But can anyone help me with the setp four i cant get it to work.It says no image or wornge one.

Dear Sirs,

I find your guide on how to root the HTC one V is very comprehensive and wonder if this guide is also workable for HTC Desire VC?

Best regards,
Vincent

Though the two devices are similar, I doubt it would work since recoveries are device specific as are rooting binaries. If you are willing to take the risk, make 100% certain you have the RUU for your specific device on hand before you try. If you are uncertain what I'm talking about, I would discourage you from trying.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I've been sitting here reading all this. This is my second Android. My first one I rooted and had working fine. No recovery unfortunately... :( Hard bricked now(You really don't wanna know how haha)
I'm sitting here in the command prompt waiting.

C:\Android> fastboot flash recovery cwmrecovery.img
< waiting for device >

It's had this for like 10-15 mins now. Everything was running smoothly up until now...
Help please?

what youre having is a lack of conectivity to the phone in fastboot, not nessarily a prollem with the recovery image,or its location, those would cause different errors.

make sure the device is fastboot, not hboot(or the booted OS ) it should be a white screen with colored letters, and youll see a red fastboot usb

if you are there, non conectivity can be any of the following:
-drivers not installed. i forget what the OP recomends, but i personally would use thes from revolutionary: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe download and run the .exe
-bad usb cable or port. try switching cables and ports on the PC. ive learned the hard way not all usb cables are created equal ;) sometimes things just want an unplug/replug. sometimes a reboot of the PC will get things working again.
-something runing on the PC causing interfearance. you need to disable or temporarily uninstall everything capable of talking to the phone: htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, even itunes can casue issues.

once youve tried some things, and are ready to flash the recovery, enter this command first:
fastboot devices
if it spits back your serial number, then you are good to go with the flash command. if it does not, then you still have an issue.

you can try manually updating the drivers if you need to. plug the phone in,in fastboot mode. find it with device manager(assuming youre using windows). right click, and update drivers. point the wizard to the unzipped revolutionary file i linked above.

hope that helps :)
