Root [GUIDE] How to Root the HTC One V

Dear Sirs,

I find your guide on how to root the HTC one V is very comprehensive and wonder if this guide is also workable for HTC Desire VC?

Best regards,
Vincent

i have a more usiversal guide,i can put up in your phones root subforum,if we have one here. however,im not sure what desire you have... if youd like help with htcdev unlock,pm me your hboot info so we can put a guide up in the right place. :)

edit:
ive found out a lil more about your phone, and found a recovery,so we just need to figure out where to put a guide. i *think* it would work on the whole desire v series.

Thank you. After a while I did all of the above, minus a restart.
Closed HTC sync and all that. USB is new, and never lost connection today at work on the pc while charging. All the drivers are new installed from HTC website yesterday. Everything was running smooth up until my friend showed up after I unlocked the bootloader and I closed everything to take a break and see her. When I re opened everything was when this started. I just got off work, so I'm about to reboot and try again. Wish me luck! =]

So, after my reboot I found the problem. Driver was reinstalling every time I plugged my phone in. The install failed. I got it working and everything went perfect. Got ROM Toolbox Pro how I want it, and just did a backup. Time to go ROM hunting! =D
Thank you!

awsome! glad you got it working :smokingsomb:

Hi

I was able to root my device. I checked it with Root Checker and I got root access.
But after I installed the Cyanogenmod, I lost root access (I checked it again with Root Checker). I know that root access is disabled by default in Cyanogenmod and there should be an option to enable this (under Developer options), but I haven't got this option.
Also, I cannot enable wifi for some reason.

Did I do something wrong? Do I need to download another version of Cyanogenmod? Some website advised me to install the 2012-03-27 version...

Welcome to AndroidForums :hello:

Cyanogenmod should come rooted as far as I know. Make sure that you have a superuser access management app such as Superuser or SuperSU installed, or the device will be unable to utilize its root privileges.

I have rooted ALL my android phones. And I am stucked with this one, HTC one V. I turned it on, and flashed the update OTA (battery calibration bla bla bla...), and followed your guide. I stucked at step 3, after connected to PC, "waiting for device". I am able to connect to PC, and see my SD card/eMMC. I think my USB driver is not correct. How do I install the right USB driver? can I use some other driver? I use 'other' USB driver for the kyocera Rise and got lucky, and it rooted. This HTC One V is fuzzy! The phone is not rooted yet... :(

HTC from black Friday one day ago, and flashed the battery calibration update. Have X86/java installed, adb working, winXP.

Thanks,

bun

Ok. Root is fixed now. I had to install CWM-SuperSU again.
But my wifi is still broken. I looked it up on Google, but no real answer popped up.

Edit: Check my next post.

installing htc sync should install the correct drivers(install or disable htc sync afterward) or try the revolutionary drivers i linked a couple posts up- they are in a .exe file you download and run.

aside ftom that, since you mention being able to see internal storage and sd,make sure you have the phone in charge only mode to use "adb commands in the booted OS.

make sure the phone is in fastboot mode,if using fastboot commands

notknowing what part of step 3 youre actually stuck at,we may need a lil more info.

assuming youre in fastboot mode, check out post #125,since that is the same prollem he was having ;)

it may be a prollem with that build,or it may be an issue with your flash procedure.

did you wipe:
-data/factory reset
-cache
-dalvik cache

and did you somehow install the correct boot image?

if you missed any of these steps, might try doing a "full wipe" of the things listed above andinstall the rom again :)

scotty85: Thanks for the revolutionary driver. That does it. I download and installed it, and the rest of the instruction followed thru without any glitch. Thank you again.

I still have a few noob questions, if you dont mind.

1) After a phone has been rooted, but no recovery installed, can one still use the factory reset? would the factory reset unroot a rooted phone, in general?

2) I believe one should never use the factory reset if CWR or TWRP has been installed, right?

3) I like to play with LCD density, One V became unstable when Lcd set below 200. Wonder if that is the same for everybody?

4) What is this thing called RUU eveybody is talking about? Only if one wants to downgrade or reset to stock ROM?

Thanks again

if you do not install a custom recovery, then the factory reset from hboot,or in settings will indeed still work.

the factory reset will erase all user data, leaving it in an out-of-the-box state. superuser and its matching binary are installed in system/app(not data/app where user apps are installed) as such,it will still be rooted after the factory reset. :) youll need to remove these in order to unroot. you can run an ruu, physically delete them with root explorer,or if youre using the "superSU" superuser,i believe it has an option to unroot.

2) I believe one should never use the factory reset if CWR or TWRP has been installed, right?
selecting factory reset from hboot or the menu settings will simply take you to your custom recovery. there is a custom recovery option to wipe data/factory reset wich will very effectively erase your user data when you want to flash new roms. the main difference is that the stock recovery seems to be able to wipe more obscure parts of the phone, wich could be handy if you encounter other unexplainable issues, such as unstable data or phone signals.
3) I like to play with LCD density, One V became unstable when Lcd set below 200. Wonder if that is the same for everybody?
i personally dont mess with lcd,nor do i actually have a one v,but i do remember that you should not make any drastic changes to the lcd number. that may be why your having trouble. chage it in several small steps to get to where you want, and maybe it will then be more stable

4) What is this thing called RUU eveybody is talking about? Only if one wants to downgrade or reset to stock ROM?
technically,RUU= htcs Rom Updater Utility. technically it is a .exe file that is run on the PC with the phone plugged in,wich updates your phone to newer software/firmware. the term "RUU" has come to generically mean any factory signed-by-htc software update,so when someone says "ruu" they could also be a .zip file that is updated via hboot. :)

its main use is to install facotry software. either to fix prollems,or to get to a different factory rom version.

Thanks again

hope that helps :)

Thank you for the detail reply, that is very useful. Changing lcd is a fetish for me :) ; I got my Nexus 7, rooted, changed lcd and got a soft brick, I softbrick my $240 Nexus7 in less than 4 hr. Luckily, there are instruction to unbrick it, and it was fine after 6 hrs of hard work. The bottomline, your advice NOT to mess with lcd are very important - you may softbrick your device; That being said, lcd changed is more than just the display, it also affects performance, to some small extent :) ; For the One V, I settled with 190 and it is table. 180 is not. I did not bother to test more.

I thought someone said sense 4 is probably 'the best' custom ROM. I tried to search for it, and cannot find anything. any links?

I done unlocked bootloader, rooted, and install TWRP. And now bootloader remained unlocked. I dont feel comfortable to have it unlocked. What should I do to have it locked? And if I locked it, do I have to unlock it everytime when I flash a custom ROM? Or, is there a command, like fastboot bootloader lock/unlock?

Thanks again,

bun

I wiped all these things a various amount of times.
But you say something about the boot image. This guy has the same problem as I have:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31353607&highlight=wifi#post31353607
How do I flash the kernel? And where does the boot.img file come from? It was not provided in the mod zip I downloaded.

Thanks CafeKampuchia for the instruction and also than you to ask this question - I touched the recovery by mistake and wipe off my system. Following the instruction and finally got back my phone.

Shipingli, welcome to Android Forums and I'm glad the guide helped you out! Could you please restate your question as I don't understand it.

Ok. I figured out what I did wrong.

For the ones who care...
I had to flash my kernel. So I downloaded the latest boot image for Cyanogenmod and flashed it (My Files -> I used the CM9 version, because I installed that one). I restarted my phone. The wifi was working, but my normal data wasn't working anymore. The solution is to reinstall Cyanogenmod (apparently mods must be installed AFTER the boot flashing). Everything works as it should be. Now I have root from the beginning.
Versions I used:
Cyanogenmod CM9-20121016.zip
Boot Image: boot-TK-USB-CM9-OC-VDD-201210112240.img

Thanks for this tutorial. The rooting itself was peanuts. Just the installation of the of the mod is a bit tricky if you don't know that you have to flash your boot first.
I'll consider a donation for Chainfire.

PS: In case your boot screen hangs on the 'development purposes only' shit, you have to reflash your boot with the right image. (If you flash your boot, this screen is normal, but it should only last for about 30 seconds.)

Im am unable to unlock the boot loader. I believe I have followed all the instuctions. I get stuck trying to get the token.after I enter the commands in the command prompt to get token. It just tells me its waiting on the device and nothing happens. Please point me in the right direction,

could be an issue with drivers, could be seomthing running on the pc,could be a bad usb cable. check the following:

troubleshooting connectivity issues:
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities
-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot,enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.

hope that helps :)

Cheflon how did you reflash your one v if you were locked into cwm. I have the same problem and nothing works. How am I supposed to reflash it?

Cheflon, How did you get out of the CWM recovery. I am having the same problem as you, that my one v is stuck on the CWM logo and when I press reboot now to get out, the logo appears again. I tried to click everything on the CWM boot but the logo appears and nothing happens. How did you reflash the recovery and which download did you use, because I used the one for CDMA phones (my service is virgin mobile), can you please help me to get out of the CWM boot and get the right CWM?

Hello all - first post. Looking for any feedback/ideas about how to get my One V rooted. I have a CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4 menu with these options:

- reboot system now
- install zip from sdcard
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced

Below that is the black hat logo. Where I'm stuck is that if I pick ANY of the above options I get a screen with the hat, but nothing happens. I'm trying to install the zip from the sd card, but no dice.

I have verified the sdcard is Fat32, and that the CWM-SuperSU-v0.9x.zip is present. I can still get into the stock phone OS (whatever it's called) as well HBOOT options screen with the white background.

Any ideas appreciated!
