Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Hello....

I am glad that worked!!! =)
Outstanding!

I was wondering if it is necessary to partition my SD Card?? I currently only have a 2GB SD Card and on that posts says I have to make "a 1GB Link2SD EXT4 partition and 512MB Linux swap partition ". Do you think is worth doing it or can I just use like that?
Yes, it's necessary to make a Link2SD partition but not the Linux swap partition. I only have a 1GB card in my wife's WFS and I only have 300MB allocated for Link2SD and that's more than adequate for the apps she uses.

Also I was wondering if I can delete the stock ROM .zip file that is currently on my SD Card since that is already installed on my phone or do I have to keep it?
Trash

I did a recovery backup before I installed this stock ROM so in case everything goes wrong I can use that, but I will do
+1

To backup everything with Titanium I have to do one application at a time??? Or I just backup apps I plan on deleting and then if something goes wrong I can restore just that app I deleted???
Unless you buy the full version you have to restore and delete one app at a time. I usually do a bunch in a row and haven't killed a ROM yet. Like I said, just be careful not to delete anything that looks related to the operation of the ROM. Try to delete only stuff you see in the app tray. You should be fine.

Thanks so much again!!! You are great CafeCampuchia!!!
Thanks :D I'm just glad I could help.

As you mention in Step 4
Note:
this will only work if your phone's bootloader is successfully unlocked (you see ***_UNLOCKED_*** on your HBOOT screen) or you happen to have an S-ON phone.
So,
I have an S-ON phone so do I need to unlock Bootloader ? I mean do I need step 3 in order to root my HTC wildfire S A510e ?
Thanks 👍
Welcome to Android Forums :hello: Stick around long enough and I you'll wind up with a rooted phone that has plenty of memory for your apps :D

Yes, you do have to run step 3, but you'll make it!

alright so first i download the two files and htc sync and make sure that my android connects to the pc then go to [Tutorial] How to root CDMA wildfire s and s-off and other great tutorials - xda-developers and do steps one through twenty?

when i connect my android to my pc it wont mount as a disk drive and i have htc sync installed

and how do i back up my sd
Yes on the first question, then come back here for steps 4 & 5.

On question 2:
1. Install HTC Sync and kill it in task manager. You only want the HTC USB drivers that come with it. If the program is running it will cause conflicts.

2. When you plug the phone in via USB, make sure that it's in Charge only mode! I know this is counter-intuitive, but it's right.

3. Make sure that USB Debugging is enabled on you phone by going to Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.

Wallah!

Question 3: Use Disk drive mode and copy the contents from your phone to your computer. BTW, rooting will not erase the contents of your SD card. Not even a factory reset does that.

so i have the htc sync software installed and stopped tru task manager and android attached in usb debug mode and tryed charge only and disk mode but simple gold card will not recognise the android no error messages or anything just looks like this (attachment)

so i completley re installed windows and then installed htc sync first then connected the android to the pc but it cannot find the drivers for the device.

hey...thanks for the procedure.. it was very usefull . pls how do I know that my phone is completely rooted... I hv followed all the procedures and even installed the clockworkmod recovery as u hv described. I was also able to backup my HTC Rom but I couldn't flash the cyanogenmod7.2. so Is my phone rooted at all? how can I know if I rooted the phone correctly?

Hello...

More questions:

Do I have to install the stock ROM and follow all the other steps that are listed under post #385 or just partition the SD Card?

When I was using Minitool Partition Wizard Pro Home Edition and in one of the steps it says: "Use the down arrow in the middle field "Partition Size:" to change the value and consequently the value of the "Free Space After: field as well until you have created around 1027 MB of free space. *Warning - Do not create free space before the first primary FAT32 partition!!! If you do discard changes and start over! "

The initial value was 1884,03MB in the partition size and as I use the down arrow I could not go lower than 1474,42MB and the unallocate space after was 407,90. I was kind of lost how much I should leave since I could not go lower to 1027MB

Thanks
Debora

Make sure that you have all of the following in order :

Before beginning, make sure that SDK tools for Android, Java runtime, and HTC Sync are installed on your Windows computer. If you run Mac, I can't help you. I avoid all that narcissistic iStuff like the plague.

Before you begin, make sure that your computer can properly recognize the phone:
1. To get up-to-date USB drivers for your device, install the latest version of HTC Sync. But the program sometimes causes conflicts, so during this procedure, make sure it is not running. Open Task Manager in Windows and kill it. If you don't use HTC Sync, you may also open Control Panel and uninstall it without uninstalling the drivers.

2. With the phone on, connect the USB cable. Make sure the phone is connected in Charge only mode.

3. Enable USB debugging by going to Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging.

Yes, this phone is rootable and it already has an updated bootloader. You may proceed from step 3C of the guide. But make sure your computer can properly see your phone when connected by USB. See the post above.

Install and open any app that requires root permissions such as Titanium Backup. When you open the app, SuperUser should put up a dialog box asking if you want to grant Titanium Backup root permission. If not, Titanium Backup will tell you that it can't access root permissions and the phone is not rooted.

And if you have installed ClockworkMod Recovery, then it doesn't matter of your stock ROM is rooted or not. You should be able to flash CM7. Recheck the directions for flashing the ROM.

Not necessary. You can do this with Insink71's ROM or any other rooted ROM for that matter. What I don't know is if his ROM supports ext4. If so (he'll mention it in the op) use it for the Link2SD partition. If not, stick with ext2.

Hard to say since I'm not looking at your screen. When you open that dialog box, you should just be moving the slider on the graphic to the left until the number reads how you like. Hope that helps.

well i was able to create my goldcard but now when i try to transfer the diag files to it my computer freezes. upon reboot it shows the files on the sd card but when i try to go into the hboot it scans for the files but nothing ha[[ens

I was trying to root my friend's phone and ran into a problem right from the beginning...
I tried to update the RUU. So i double click on the exe file and the first pop-up comes up where it says 'preparing to set-up' and then....that's it...the installation wizard just disappears.
Not sure what's wrong... The HTC drivers are installed, HTC Sync is not running (I even uninsalled it afterwards to try and see if it works) but nothing seems to work...
Am I missing something here?
Could it be an antivirus issue?

edit: the only thing I can think of is that when I first plugged the phone through the USB cable, it first gave some errors when it was installing the drivers or whatever it is that the laptop usually does. But I'm not sure if those errors got sorted or not. Not even sure where to go to check. I unfortunately now have windows 7 and and I am used to windows xp so I'm finding hard to find anything at all...

Are you doing this with the sd card in your phone or a card reader?

Caro, you can always flash the ROM.zip from the SD card using procedure 2 of my upgrade guide. That takes USB out of the equation temporarily, but you'll have to get it working before updating the bootloader.

BTW, try uninstalling the USB drivers first from device manager (with the phone plugged in) and then from control panel. Then install the latest htc sync.

Ok. The bad news is that the sd card has to be in a card reader for this to work. If you can't rustle one up, you may have to unlock your bootloader instead. :(

i was able to locate a micro sd to usb reader so what do i do now i tryed to transfer those two files to the sd card through the usb card reader and it still froze

Struggling here :)

I successfully rooted my GF's Wildfire S (Virgin Mobile) phone, and then she did the 2.3.5 update.

Then she decided to reset it to factory defaults (back to 2.3.4) and now I cant root it.

Bootloader appears as:

I used the htcdev bootloader unlock last time. They wont work this time.

Whats my next step? (OTA upgrade to 2.3.5 doesn't work, either. Says it's up to date).

Thanks!

EDIT: Got the bootloader unlocked, moved on to the next steps, and hitting option 3 on the HTC Supertools errors (cant change permissions, asks if I am rooted).

Not rooted.
