Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you please explain what you mean by backup stock ROM before I do anything. Because it seems like I cant back it up unless I root first.

And any idea to my other questions anyone please ?
You are right, you will need to root your phone first before being able to back up your rom.
For the other questions, I would rather not say anything because honestly I don't really remember anymore. But I know you should shoose the RUU based on your country & carrier and the number at the back of your battery.
Cafekampuchia will be able to guide you better than I can.
As far as question 4, I really have no idea. Since I didn't brick my phone, I wouldn't know :) But if you follow the steps carefully, you should be fine!

Also, the ROM No. version on the HTCdev site is your software version, not your Kernel, as far as i know.

Thanks for the reply, can you please tell me from my phone info what is my phone's ROM Version ? And if its not here, where can I find it ? Also is my HBOOT version fine or need to do something about it ? Can I update HTCDev RUU on this HBOOT version ? Anyone has or seen similar phone being rooted without any issues ?

I'm in the same boat as you. My software version is 1.33.401.2 and cant see, to get it working. You need to do the first Step to get the 2.13.401.3 version but it dont work for me

Well did you meant updating the software version to 2.3.5 ?

Q1. When I install HTCdev RUU, will that delete my stock Rom and everything ?

I have already backed up everything using app backup and restore, sms backup and restore and copied sd card to my computer.
It will delete user data including user apps, but not the ROM. I suggest upgrading to 2.3.5 because it looks and feels the same except for the lock screen but has a 20-30mb advantage in free memory.

Q2. Now how do I backup game data like highscores ? Any app to do it ? Any app to backup internal memory?
Sadly, only after you root using Titanium Backup. There are some apps in Google Play for backing up game data but they are game specific.

I like my stock Rom with HTC Sense, how do I backup the stock ROM before the factory reset ?
Can't be done, but like I said above, not necessary. The only part of the ROM it touches is the bootloader which the end user doesn't notice.

Q3. I have attached a screenshot of HTCDev's site which shows the Rom available for Wildfire S. Can anyone please tell me from my phone information which one should I choose. The kernel version of my phone (2.6.35.10) and the ROM version available on HTCDev site doesnt match at all or lets say I dont see anything close at all. The maximum version they have is 2.17.832.1.

Is my phone very different or already updated ? And why my HBOOT version so low, only 0.90 when most people has HBOOT version of 1.09 or more ?
You aren't downloading an entire ROM, just a new bootloader. The most important thing is that it match your part number (PG76100) as indicated in the guide, step 3B. Because your ROM is so old, there is no bootloader update for it. You will have to run with the HTC EU version for PG76100. Both you and Irishstevo will probably have to update it by flashing the zip file from your sd card per the sub-procedure near the bottom of step 3B. The RUU probably wont install it.

Q4. Which step causes the phone to go brick in these steps ? Will updating my RUU cause the phone to brick? Anyway to install or setup recovery ?
None of these steps causes a brick, especially running an RUU! Not following the guide carefully can. And if the phone bricks, it will be a "soft brick" from which you can recover. But it's very rare when updating the bootloader.

Q5. Is my step alright till now? First backup everything, then install RUU from HTCDev ?

Thanks in advance.
If you are carefully following the guide then yes, you're doing fine.

Well did you meant updating the software version to 2.3.5 ?
Yes, 2.13.401.3 is a 2.3.5 ROM. But that doesn't matter. The bootloader resides in a separate partition from the ROM. The most important thing is that it match your device's part number, PG76100.

Did you try flashing the bootloader manually per the sub-procedure found near the bottom of step 3B yet? Chances are that's the only way your going to get it updated short of installing the 2.13.401.3 ROM.

Is this the one you meant ?

Hi Sisu

Initially I followed the steps on HTC Wildfire S Blog - Tutorials, Root, Tips and Tricks for your Wildfire S but then I realized my phone was not rooted after all so I followed steps 4 and started 5 on this forum and I believe it is rooted now but I tried to install .sense 2.0 custom ROM and didn't work got stuck on 50% post-install step. The ROM .sense 3.5 has been discountinued so I could not find a ROM that is compatible with MarvelC to install.

I did update hboot before unlocking but I followed these steps:

Go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Information > More. Keep note of the Kernel Version.
Now go to HTCDev.com and Register for an account.
Once registered, go to the home page of HTCDev.com and select Unlock Bootloader.
On the right of this page, select the HTC Wildfire S on the dropdown box and Click Unlock Bootloader.
Accept all the long disclaimer messages, and click proceed to install instructions.
Now, scroll down to the bottom of the page. Find the ROM which has the same number as the kernel version you noted down before and download it. If you cannot find your ROM scroll to the bottom of this post. For example, mine was 2.13.401.3 so I downloaded the HTC EU one.
Once it has downloaded, plug in your phone, make sure USB debugging is enabled and open the file you just downloaded from HTCDev.
Now, follow the on screen instructions. It should be fairly easy.
Once it's done Congratulations! You have updated your bootloader.

How can I find a compatible custom ROM to install on my phone???

Thanks
Debora

Well, that's what what happens when I load into bootloader. Dont you have additional rows below that? Bootloader, recovery, etc...Once the messages are gone, you use volume down to highlight recovery, and click power button and go from there. I hope the issue is this simple and nothing else :)

And I do have all these options on HBOOT the problem I am having right now is to install a custom ROM.

EDIT: I just ran the RUU again and it worked , well it said the ROM was installed.

But when I booted my phone in HBOOT, it doesn't say unlocked, it just has everythiong the same:
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT 0.90.000
MICROP-0451
RADIO-7.46.35.08

So what now?

So at what stage during running the RUU should I look for temp folder/app data? I have tried this also but couldnt find it anywhere.

What RUU were you installing, the 2.13.401.3 ROM or an unlockable bootloader? Either one should have updated your HBOOT which strangely is still at 0.90.000 as if nothing happened.

What is your strategy, update the ROM to 2.13.401.3 first and then update the bootloader, or go directly to updating your bootloader?

Well i'm still trying to find a good download to update the ROM to 2.13.401.3, but no luck yet. Anbd I tried the bootloader directly (HTC-EU) which said it was complete but nothing changed. Also tried the O2/DE UK ROM but that just failed again as previously.

So i'm pretty stumped at the moment

Sadly there isn't much out there for MarvelC. For a list of currently available ROMs, check out the following thread:
[INDEX] roms/recovery/guides/kernel/root/...

Search the page for MarvelC, CDMA and A510c. You'll see some stuff, mostly modified stock Sense 2. Make sure you read the OP (original or first post) to see what is/is not working with a particular ROM.

Let's stick with updating the bootloader (HTC EU) since you have the file. Since running the RUU didn't work, you need to run the sub-procedure near the bottom of step 3B. Since you're having trouble finding the temp folder try this (step 1):

A. Find your temp folder. ie, C:\Users\[yourwindowsloginnamehere]\AppData\Local\Temp\. The AppData folder is hidden so you might have to change settings in Explorer or type it in manually (case sensitive).

B. Delete everything out of your temporary folder to make the RUU temp files easy to find.

C. Run the RUU...exe and wait until it has extracted all the files and the wizard comes up.

D. WHILE THE RUU IS STILL RUNNING, go back to the temporary folder. It will have created two sub-folders. One of them runs the wizard, one is the ROM.

Proceed to step 2 to find rom_02.zip in one of the sub-folders the RUU created.

OK, i have tried this. The only Temp folder i could find was in C:/Windows/Temp. I followed yuor steps, deleted all files, ran the RUU but it created no sub-folders in the Temp folder.

Thanks for all the help, I ll try again later but think i'll just give up at this stage :(

You aren't looking for a temp folder where my post says to look. :(

C:\Users\[yourwindowsloginnamehere]\AppData\Local\Temp\

As I mentioned, the AppData folder is both hidden and case sensitive so it can be hard to find.

Ok found it, i'll give it a go again

There was only a file rom.zip, here was no rom_02. I changed rom to PG76IMG.zip, but when i Hboot omn the phone, it says image not found or something, it doesnt load it.

UPDATE: Installed the PG76IMG.zip in HBOOT, shut down phone, removed PG76IMG.zip from SD Card, loaded up in HBOOT and.......Nothing. It's still reading HBOOT 0.90.000

If i cant manage to to get the RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.402.3 update, would it be the same process if i was to use RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.14.401.1 as there seems to be download for it on the XDA page?

Since your phone HBOOT Version is same as mine, I advice you follow my procedure.

If thats urs then do the following:

Dont download HTC EU, instead download HTC ASIA India 2.13.720.1

http://www.diigo.com/item/image/2olim/hi5g?size=o

hi5g

Do the flashing 2 times .Rename ROM1 to PG76IMG.zip and flash ROM1 first, then rename ROM2 to PG76IMG.zip and flash it again. Just like the user fyerwyer.

For me this was the hardest step, and I can confirm to others reading this that the flashing ROM from your MicroSDHC does work.

I just want to confirm something with OP (CafeKampuchia). CafeKampuchia, when I did this step I found it was necessary to use the Asia RUU, because the Europe RUU only had 1 zip inside.

Also, within the Aisa RUU there were 2 zips (rom_1.zip and rom_2.zip), and I was instructed to exectute rom_1.zip on the SDcard first (this one just updates the radio), and then rom_2.zip (which updates radio and hboot). Not sure if this info is valid for everyone, but it did 100% work for me. Let me know if things have changed recently (maybe the Europe RUU was updated) and I can edit out this post (to avoid confusion).

Thanks again for the kick-ass guide.

Copy token correctly. When you copy fromm MS-DOS, you usually leave a space at front. You have to select the first line and use backspace to move them to the left hand side.
Do this for the rest of the line if you see an error.

And select unlocked, it will factory reset :(

Once its unlocked do no 4. Make sure you turn off antivirus when you run Supertool.

in 4B, SuperToolv3 : 1 and 3 worked for me. Mine is rooted. I tested with screenshot app and do install SuperSU.

Thats what I have done so far. Had a little problem flashing Clockwork Mod img.

D:\> fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img

The command fastboot needs to be set up in windows to work.

Thanks so much CafeKampuchia for the wonderful guide. Followed all your steps till 4 and now finally rooted !!!! Installed SuperSU and tested with an screenshot app. (anyway any su command you know I can put into SuperSU or Superuser ? )

But I used HTC ASIA India and flashed it 2 times just like the user fyerwyer.

So far everything is fine. It updated my HBOOT into

UNLOCKED

My android version is still 2.3.3.

5. I'm finally rooted! Now what?
5A. Install ClockworkMod Recovery for WFS
1. Download the official 5.0.2.8 image at Index of /recoveries/. Make sure you choose the right one for your device whether Marvel or MarvelC. Extract the img file from the zip you just downloaded and save it somewhere you can find it later.

2. Boot the phone into HBOOT. (You are a pro at this by now, right? ) After it scans for PG7610.zip, select FASTBOOT and press the power button then connect the USB cable. The word FASTBOOT will change into FASTBOOT USB. If not, then either your USB drivers for the Wildfire S or Android SDK Tools is not installed properly.

3. Open a command prompt in Windows and navigate to the folder where you extracted the recovery image in step 1.

4. Type the following command: fastboot flash recovery [image name.img]. For example:
D:\> fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img

If you have downloaded the MarvelC image, the image name will be slightly different.

5. After flashing the new recovery, reboot the phone and head over to Google Play [formerly Android Market] to pick up the ClockworkMod ROM Manager app.

5B. Backup your stock HTC ROM in CWM5 Recovery!! Before you make changes to your stock ROM or decide to install a custom ROM, this is a must! Reverting back to a stock HTC ROM after installing a custom ROM can cause massive headaches. Restoring from a backup is MUCH easier. It will also help if you've ruined your ROM causing a softbrick. You just boot into CWM5 Recovery, do a factory reset and clear cache (including Dalvik) and do a restore.

So far I have followed all the steps and flashed marvel clockwork image into HBOOT. Then after I installed Clockwork ROM Manager, in the options Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery, I dont see my flashed file. When I click it, it asks me to download and flash one. Should I flash using ClockworkMod ROM manager again or is there another way to recover that image before I backup my Stock ROM ?

Will flashing it twice cause issues ?

I flashed recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img for my Marvel A510e

No need to flash twice and no file to see. Go back into HBOOT, use volume down to select RECOVERY and press the power button. Then go do a backup.
