Root [GUIDE] How to Root the Wildfire S

Reboot with the volume down key and power key pressed at the same time. After a moment you should see the hboot screen. If you have s-off, it will say so at the top.

For those still looking for a software solution to turn WildFire Marvel S-ON to S-OFF i found this tutorial online.

I can confirm it works because after trying every other method, and even going to some dude who claimed he can and couldn't, I just stumble on this just RIGHT NOW and it works, I couldn't believe it at first but It really works.

forums.androidcentral.com/htc-wildfire-s/134629-tutorial-s-off-virgin-mobile-cdma-s-off-without-xtc-clip-confi.html

unfortunately you might have to become a member to download the files, but hey, it's better than paying for the clip right? Good luck folks

And now i can officially confirm that my HTC Wildfire S is now rooted, thanks to the guide in this thread, awesome job.

Worked on my wildfire s 2.3.3 (unlocked from telstra). Needed to stop quickboot in settings first and also suggest allow third party apps.

by the way, I have the Non-Sim Version of HTC, for those who are probably wondering.
i think this thread is for GSM only - not cdma...

perhaps the thread title & OP can be amended to reflect this?
Let me clarify this a little: "Non-Sim" means CDMA as opposed to GSM.

CDMA phones can be rooted by changing S-ON to S-OFF by producing what's called a "Goldcard." For such phones, refer to [Guide] How to root Virgin Mobile CDMA wildfire s.

GSM phones can be rooted by obtaining S-OFF with an XTC Clip (~$50 USD) and the guide you are presently reading, or following this guide for free: [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S A510e GSM with S-ON.

Original post said it needed confirmation on US carriers, so here's a confirmation that this works with MetroPCS Wildfire S.

After unlocking the bootloader through HTC and achieving S-OFF, this was simple. Recovery works great (Is it CWM based?), root.zip worked as stated. Thanks!

You're a total LEGEND! That worked a treat thanks!!!! :D

HTC Wildfire S - Unlocked on HTCDEV.com then S-OFF with XTC Clip followed by this guide and I'm rooted! Thanks a million

Q: Superuser force-closes when an application requests for root permissions.
R: It will not FC when the 1st app requests permissions, but will FC when a 2nd app does. It happened to me on the Bell Canada firmware. It can be fixed by clearing the Superuser application data and then running Superuser from the app drawer. It will request an update of the 'su' binary, and once installed, the error wont ocurr anymore. I guess I could definitely fix this by finding the su binary and packing it into root.zip, but I have no idea of where to find the latest version.

ETA - I got the force close crash thing (European) and it would not let me update 'su' binary it kept saying checking for updates but did nothing. I had to find superuser on Market and select it, obviously it said already installed so I clicked update, once superuser was updated it then let me update 'su' binary.

would this process work if i have s-on BUT my bootloader is unlocked
You are misunderstanding the problem. To root the phone you either have to have S-OFF or an unlocked bootloader. Since most WFS ship with S-ON and the bootloader locked, before you had to buy an XTC Clip to get S-OFF to root the device. Then in December 2011 HTC released the unlockable bootloader making it possible to root the phone even with S-ON.

So the short answer is that this procedure should work if your bootloader is unlocked, as it says in the OP:
Requirements:

  • A Wildfire S with unlocked bootloader or S-OFF.

I ran into a problem at the 1st stage as i tried to update. Once i booted into recovery mdoe so it can look for the update it kept saying CID incorrect!. Here is what i see at my bootloader screen.

Me and another member had the same problem as you but If you are still not rooted, just skip that step (1) and went to step 2 and I am now rooted. I don't know if that will work for you but try it.
