Root [GUIDE] Installing CWM and a custom ROM on the Motorola Triumph

One small addition I'd like to recommend:

1) Step one: Activate your stock Triumph with VM.

I just went through the MIUI process perfectly... only to not be able to use the ol' reliable ##VIRGIN# method of activation. Serves me right for wanting to be cautious! I had the pleasure of learning how to reinstall stock VM software, active, and then reinstall MIUI.

But, the other steps work flawlessly! :)

It sure is good that I am time machine and was able to go back...

After entering polling mode and connecting the phone to my computer (Windows 7) nothing seems to happen. The polling message on the phone continues to repeat but nothing appears on my PC.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

When you have your phone on normally and connect it with that same cord, does it work correctly? I would think it is possibly a bad cord. It could also be our auto play settings in the control panel.

Good call, I will post a reminder in there. I kind of assumed most people would get the phone and activate it, then search around for the fun ROMs and whatever. Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups.

Good assumption, overall. Only drawback for me was that my first root experience led to a bricked phone, so I was being uber-cautious.

As mentioned, the rest of the guide is fantatic. Worked step by step and I have a fanttic phone this morning!

Thanks a ton for the step by step. Will be getting my MT soon after ordered on cybermonday. Really want to install CM7 to take full avantage.

Question:
When doing the Nandroid backup, in your step by step I'm not clear on if the phone should be connected via USB or NOT connected at all when booting to CWM and then dong the Nandroid backup. From the steps it doesn't say. Should we have our phone connected to our computer or not when creating the backup?

I assume it WOULD be connected to have a place to put the backup directly. Or is this not true?

Just want to make sure I have a clear idea of what I'm to do to install the CM7

NOTE: Also, we should ROOT the phone first with Gingerbreak BEFORE any of these steps correct?

1. You need to be DISconnected from the computer in order to be able to go into recovery mode when holding down the power button + up and down volume keys.

2. Once you are in recovery mode, you can connect your phone if you want but it won't make a difference when doing a Nandroid backup. The backup is automatically placed on your SDCARD in the directory /clockworkmod/backup.

3. You don't have to root before replacing the recovery.img file. You can get into download mode without rooting. You can if you want, but it's not necessary.

EDIT: Just remember to ACTIVATE your phone BEFORE doing anything else if you will be using a MIUI or CM7 since you won't be able to activate it in those ROMS.

Mantera is right. The only reason you would need to root is if you have a bunch of apps and want to use titanium backup, which requires root.

Thx guys...

So if I understand the steps (in summary):

1. Open box and smile at new (hopefully) shiny phone :D
2. Call VM and activate/swap phone with my old one and choose plan (optional?)
3. Test it out for a bit to see if it works in Stock Rom
4. Get Astro File manager app and download Gingerbreak (optional)
4. Root phone with Gingerbreak (optional)
5. Install CWM Rocovery (following the steps)
6. Create a Nandroid backup onto the miniSDcard
7. Follow steps to install either CM7 or MIUI

Enjoy enhanced MT? ;)

Thank you very much for the guide man.
Worked perfectly on my brand new Triumph, running MIUI latest ROM now.

Pretty much, you only need to root before doing CWM if you have apps on your phone you want to back up with Titanium or the like.

You have to activate after romming? switching soon from prevail and no activation required with it so just want all the 411 lol

You have to activate it once. In my original post I assumed it had already been done. I edited it to clarify that you must activate on stock before flashing non-stock ROMs.

It has been mentioned many times in many posts.

I didn't want to activate mine but even I knew one could only use stock ROM to activate.

Why use Titanium if there is nandroid backup?
Because you can reinstall those apps+data in a different ROM. For Instance, I might have 60+ apps on stock and I didn't want to try to remember them all when I switched to CM7, and lose progress on say angry birds. That being said, it is usually better to reinstall them all from scratch. Chances are that you won't have any bad interactions form non-system apps, but it has happened.
You should never restore system apps from a different ROM with TB.

Yes, but some people won't read a bunch of posts before rooting/modding their phones. It is definitely beneficial to do so, and I am really glad you knew about it before you did so!

The little disclaimer isn't hard to add. Even if it only helps one person, it took less of my time to type than it would to have them redo all of this.

Just what the title says. It's installed and I can boot into it, get the cyan text, top line reads "CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6", but choosing ANY command simply results in the Top Hat with Orange Circle appearing but never commencing to the chosen task.

I tried re-installing (Shut down, disconnect, download mode, reconnect, /mobile/images, recopy) but I get the same result. No progress beyond booting into recovery.

Any guesses? My Triumph is rooted, I can undo that but from reading through the thread it seems that it should not make a difference.

Help?

EDIT: I was pressing the Power button to select my options (I thought I'd read that correctly.) Pressing the Menu button instead got me results. D'oh!

Use the menu button to select. I am guessing you are using the power button. The correct keys/buttons for that recovery are listed in the guide.

You are not the first that did this! Don't feel bad.

Just wanted to comment on root methods. From what I unserstand using the built in Sudo method basically has a zero percent chance of bricking the phone compared to gingerbreak. Just can't install Superuser or the phone can't be unrooted. In general though would recommend doing a backup in CWM before rooting, one of the benefits of installing CWM before rooting the phone."

I haven't heard of a single incident of bricking the phone either way. With the access we have to the img files we can put it back to stock quite easily, even if you messed up the partitions.

I don't even know if you can brick this thing. Maybe if you fry the processor or something else hardware related. I wouldn't recommend being reckless, but I haven't seen an issue from anyone rooting.

Has anyone ever had any issues booting into CWM holding down the power & volume keys? I’ve tried it 4 or 5 times today and my phone just boots into CM7 as if I just used the power button. I can select reboot into recovery via CM7 or Rom Manager but not by holding down both power & up/down volume keys. I can’t imagine it’s just me being stupid which is always a possibility but I have had this phone since the week it came out and have booted into CWM this way more times than I can imagine. Have also verified that both my volume keys are working as that was my first guess at the problem. Otherwise I haven’t made any changes other than flash manteras OC Kernel and I can’t see how it could affect anything when the phone is turned off.

It has happened a time or two, but I figured i just wasn't pressing them all at the same time. Like I let pressure off one to press another or something. The way that they are set up makes it difficult sometimes.
