Root [GUIDE] Installing CWM and a custom ROM on the Motorola Triumph

I think i messed up. I went through all of the steps up til putting cwm onto my phone. I copied the stock recovery.img then saved it to my computer. After that i deleted the stock recovery.img off of my phone and stuck cwm onto it. Well now i cant get into bootloader mode or cwm. My phone still turns on and everything. Anybody know how i can get bootloader back on my phone so i can try to put cwm on again? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for this thread--it's the most clear one I've come across!

I don't own a Triumph yet, but I'm hoping someone will have it on sale soon (below Amazon's $229) because the Optimus V I have is turning into a POS.

Anyway, I'm a total newbie at all this so I have a couple of questions:

1. If I understand correctly, flashing a custom ROM is not the same as rooting, right? Does flashing the custom ROM void the warranty?

2. Does a custom ROM (MIUI or CM7) give one the ability to uninstall the "crap" applications that take up space and that I'll never use?

Thank you. Once I get my MT, I'll probably live with the stock ROM for a while (just because I'm cautious), but everyone seems to say life is better with a custom ROM, so I'll probably take the plunge very soon.

1. All the custom ROMs come with root access, and you have to change the recovery to flash them. I would think that it would effectively void the warranty, but people have reported returning phones with hardware issues and not having an issue because of it.

2. All the Virgin Mobile bloat programs are not included in the custom ROMs. So you don't have to worry about it.

I would recommend testing the phone out for a bit to make sure that there are not any issues before doing this, but what you do is up to you.

...or several, perhaps :D

The Triumph ships with Android 2.2. Does that mean I have to choose a 2.2-based ROM (Froyocream Sandwich by Mobstergunz and ziggy46, bROM by b-randon14, PunkROM by punkmaxx, Thunder ROM by ziggy46, Princely ROM by Austrie)? Does any particular ROM have major advantages over another? I don't intend to start a big discussion over the particular strong points of any particular ROM, just wondering if there are any major differences.

Also, should I become dissatisfied with a custom ROM (geez, I hope I'm using the term correctly...), I would assume I could restore the phone back to the way it originally shipped?

Thanks for the help. As you can see, I'm new here, but I'm really loving these forums!

1. You can choose any ROM listed in the http://androidforums.com/triumph-all-things-root/385385-guide-motorola-triumph-all-things-root-guide-updated-02-17-2012-a.html
2. As long as you make a nandroid backup of your Stock ROM before you do this you can always restore that later.
3. You should just read up on the different ROMs and decide what sounds best to you, and pick that way.

hey folks, i just recently bought the triumph for my girlfriend from someone off craigslist.

phone works great and i know she'll be happy with it.

as i was going to do a factory reset, i was taking to the boot screen and shows that it has the clockwordmod recovery on it.

i'm not TOO familiar with modding, flashing roms, etc. so i'd like to remove it and just keep the phone stock everything.

how would i go about removing the clockworkmod recovery and keep the stock recovery?

i need help please

Basically you need to follow the steps listed in this post to put CWM recovery on the phone, only instead of the CWM recovery.img you use the stock recovery. I can upload that file and post the link here in a little bit for you.

Ok, here is the stock recovery file: recovery.img.stock

Just download it and rename it to recovery.img (get rid of the .stock I have added to the end) and place it in the image folder like the directions say to do for CWM. :D

I just rooted my triumph today and was wondering which ROM would be the best and easiest to install. I only have one triumph and don't really have the money to get a new one soon if i break this one so any suggestions?

The good news here is that none of the ROM on this forum are terribly risky. It's really a matter of what you need. If you need to be cutting edge, then the CM9 alpha is probably what you'll want to use. If you want to keep it simple, then Minimal Triumph is your best bet. The rest of these ROM lie somewhere in between; none of them will brick your phone. If fact, feel free to experiment and choose the one that is best for you.

When you've chosen, don't forget to thank the creator and consider sending a little contribution for the time and effort put in.

Enjoy exploring!

Thanks, i will probably explore im leaning more towards cutting edge ive been using my phone mainly to beta new mmo that r available for my phone.

Do you have to do anything if you want to change your sd card after installing CWM? I've been wondering that for a while, since this one and the intercept one puts things on your sd card, do you need to copy that over to the new card or just boot into recovery & change cards?

You can just switch them out. You should copy your backups to the new one though. They are found in clockworkmod/backups. They must be in that directory to restore them. It is probably easiest to just copy the clockworkmod folder to the new card.

Did you pull the battery out and try to boot into recovery?

i fixed but had to go back to stock rom.

it wouldnt let me do it so i had to go the round about way and do it but i got it back to normal.

thanks for the fast response though!

Did you change some of the boot animations in MIUI (using the built in theming tools, not doing it manually)? I know some of them will cause issues in which the phone will not boot.

Am I understanding correctly that it would be very difficult to do irreversible damage to my phone? If so, I feel a lot better about playing with rooting and maybe changing ROMs (I'm after efficient operation, and DO make a lot of use of the camera, so CM9 wouldn't suit me).

As long as you follow instructions on this site and ask questions, you shouldn't do anything to harm your phone that can't be fixed.
It's when people try to follow steps from another device or flash something from another phone that they get into trouble. As long as you are careful, you will be fine.

I would like to send out a word of thanks to everyone who posted in this thread.
I finally broke down and installed CM7-TG-Reloaded the other day, and between agentc13's directions and minus5252's videos, everything went smoothly.
Oh, there were a couple of minor hitches: phone didn't want to go into download mode at first, and then when it did my laptop saw the phone for a minute and then decided that the drivers didn't install, so *poof*, it was gone. Solved that my merely trying again. During the nandroid backup, I thought the process got hung up, but it just took a little while to progress to the next stage.
So far, I haven't noticed a huge difference in battery life, or that the soft keys work any better, but I'm still getting used to it. In good news, I'm not seeing a green blob in my camera (but I only saw it occasionally anyway) and I made it all the way to work today without dropping my bluetooth connection!
So big yays all around! Thanks for all your time and expertise everyone!

hello my roommate seems to have bricked his motorola triumph. we are trying to restore it using our mac and his phone has gotten to the point where the phone will not turn on but, when we plug it in we are able to get to the "mobile" file and there is nothing in there. we have downloaded the recovery files and when we try to paste the files into the "mobile" folder we get an error message on our computer saying that "the item cannot be copied because there isn't enough space. so now we are stuck and do not know where to go from here. any suggestions?
