Root [[GUIDE]] Recovery For Stock L9 With Locked BL

After some trouble I figured this out and wanted to make a clear cut guide to installing recovery on your stock rom with a locked bootloader. You can install flashable zips that are compatible with this device (do your research) and backup/restore.

!!!!!YOU CANNOT FLASH ROMS!!!!!

You'll first need the L9 recovery installer apk created by the developer here...

You can install it like a normal app just allow installation from unknown sources under settings if you don't already have it checked.

You'll also need busybox 1.21.0. . You can update to 1.21.1 after installation.

I recommend busybox by stericson or pro by stericson, both found on the playstore.

Once you've installed the correct version of busybox and the installer apk open the L9 recovery app. Select install recovery then jb/ics stable, grant it root rights. Once it says installed power down the device. After you boot up you'll see your front keys blinking this means you have recovery success. To enter recovery press and hold volume(-) while lights are blinking.. You are now in recovery!! I repeat !!!!!!YOU CANNOT INSTALL ROMS!!!!! This is mainly to be used for backup/restore.

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REASON IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE FLASHING NON COMPATIBLE ZIPS OR ANY ROMS!!

ALWAYS make a backup before doing any modifications.

Could you take a look at my post under" I screwed up" and tell me if this will work.
 
I couldn't really understand your post. What exactly did you remove? Unless you had installed this and made a backup prior to deleting probably not. Explain in detail exactly what you did (on your thread not here) and I will see if I can help you.
 
Question: Would the Factory Data Reset work if by some chance down the road I screw something up? I just only rooted with one click and changed the build prop for apps to SD. didn't touch the bootloader at all, but did delete Facebook and weather and office suite with the SU
 
I installed this about a month ago. When I originally went into recovery to make a backup I was getting a error message ( I can't remember what it said now) and I was unable to make a backup. I didn't bother with it after that. Anyways my brother accidently reset my phone several days ago. I went to recovery afterwards and it allowed me to make a backup. All this is really besides the point. Recovery is working fine so I'm wondering if I can uninstall the L9 recovery installer app?
 
Successfully made a backup using the 2nd init CWM, use backup to SD card. You can't use the internal storage to back up system and write to it at the same time. Internal SD card is emulated at data doing so...make sure you use the backup to external SD, worked perfect. I have no sd-ext partition so I'm good as gold. Thanks.
 
Hello swainsmith thank you for taking the time for explaining this to the community.

I am still relatively new to rooting, and I don't entirely understand the difference between flashing zips and flashing roms.

Does this mean that Cyanogenmod cannot be install on our phones?

There are a couple of reasons. For one, the current method for unlocking the bootloader is risky. It works great if you follow directions, but it can be quite meticulous so it's certainly not for anyone. The second is some of us are happy with stock ROM and just want to remove bloatware and flash other mods over it, since there aren't that many options for custom ROMs to install for this phone.

There is a guy over on xda, kuma82, that is working on making it pretty much completely scripted but still requires offline flashing kdz.. apparently the actual code for fastboot (required for unlocking) was removed from all versions of the L9 code except one version for europe.. i'm to the point I'll believe it when I see it.. think I bricked this phone a few times the first week I had it in different ways (don't even think it was actually functional much that week), and from what I've seen the phone is pretty much unbrickable if you are willing to spend the time learning how to recover it.. it is finicky..

I have installed BusyBox Pro (1.21.0-Stericson) but 1.22.0 is available. Someone can tell me if latest version play well with this recovery?
 
When you open BusyBox, there's a drop down menu for what version of BusyBox you want to install and where to install it (xbin or bin) use v1.21.0 and istall to xbin. After you install... power off the device and make sure the lights on the keys are flashing and you can get into CWM, if so change the backup format to TAR and make a backup to external sdcard. After you get into CWM you should be able to update ypur BusyBox version.
Personally BusyBox by (Stericson) gave me problems booting into CWM. I had to install BusyBox X to be able to boot to CWM.

I have no problems with Busibox by Stericson 1.21.0, but with 1.21.1 cannot backup/restore on recovery, I do not know if 1.22.0 works OK, that's why was asking... I use my phone for business so cannot brick it, need confirmation before update.
 
I would wait for confirmation from someone then.
Like I said BusyBox by Stericson gave me problems... After i updated to v1.21.1 and booted to CWM all seemed fine, then i rebooted back to the OS I got an error, (Encrypting - Reset Phone) I had to boot back to CWM and restore a backup and then I couldn't get back into CWM after that.
 
I have this recovery installed and everything seems to work. I make a system backup to external SD and it works fine but the file is huge. Then when I reboot the media scan takes forever and the phone gets hot...Am I doing something wrong? I want to be able to install X-posed framework but want to make sure I have a back up that is working...Is this normal?

Hi joeseffi, you could use the free app Scan Media Root and scan only when you add new medias.

This type of recovery uses a blobs folder to make restoration faster. Yes media scan will run forever and the file is huge. What I used to do is copy the backup to my computer and move it back to the phone before I started toying with any system mods.
 
HI i installed this recovery on lgms769 from metropcs, was successful the thing i cannot boot into recovery, when the leds start blinking i press volume down they stop blinking but nothing happens it gets stuck on lg logo. i followed everything to the letter. any suggestions?
