Root [Guide] Root for Official 2.3.5 With Guide

How do you Install ClockWorkMod? I know I can download Rom Manager and try to flash it with that, but on other devices, it has never worked and I would have to install manually through an update.zip

Now I have this Captivate, but cannot find a Clock Work Mod Recovery updat.zip, and now I'm worried if I have to depend upon ROM Manager to finally work or not.

Is there a way to manually flash the rocovery for the Captivate? (2.3.5)

CWM from the market will not work with 2.3.5 captivate, it won't recognize your device, and it is way behind in version. You need to flash a kernal that has it infused. I use corn kernel which has CWM 5 already in it. I will post link when I get back to a PC

Edit:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477

I use V7.05 because 7.06 was giving me random reboots. Flash this using Odin like the root guide tells you (put it in the PDA slot) only replace my downloads with the Corn Kernel, once you flash it on there, there is no need to flash back to stock Kernel. So just one flash of the Corn Kernel and you will have CWM Recovery installed.

Geeve

Edit 2: You can root as well with this Kernel once flashed, it is in the advanced options, I won't get in to that here though.

Sorry I am new to this, but I just updated to the official 2.3.5 if I root will it erase my data or anything else on my phone? Thanks.

Geeve, thank you. I will try this when I get home, thanks!

Okay, I installed the kernal with ClockWorkMod on it.....but it wouldn't let me install a ROM....what I mean is that CWM didn't even see any ROMs on my SD card.

I'm rooted and everything, just can't install Roms, any ideas fellas?

Not sure. You can try to flash the kernal again and see what it does. Other than that make sure you have the zip file for the Rom in the right place on the phone so recovery can see it. Are you getting errors or is it just ignoring the zips?

Geeve

I'll try flashing it again. I just flashed Corn instead of the Stock Rom. I think that is what you said to do, right? I put the Rom (s) on the root of the SD and it just didn't see it. I clicked External_SD, and it wasn't there either.

I rebooted, and checked the built in file manager and it saw the Roms in the root of the SD. But when I booted into Recovery, CWM didn't see them.

Also, I could only boot into recovery manually (volume buttoms, power), but when I tried to use ROM Manager, it wouldn't even boot. It was weird.

That is weird. I just went back to stock and flashed the corn kernel. Rooted it using recovery and was able to flash a zip rom no problem. Hmmm definitely try to reflash it and yes just flash corn and leave it. Yeah the only way to get to recovery is volume buttons and power. Let us know after you reflash and I will see what I van come up with.

Other than that yeah make sure your zip is sitting on the root of the main SD.

Edit: you are seeing the corn boot screen right? And when in recovery it is showing version 5.0.1 or something along those lines.

Edit 2: this may seem silly, but when you get to recovery and are at the stage where you see all the files make sure you scroll all through them. Sometimes zip files end up at the very bottom and you won't see them unless you scroll completely through the list. Also check in other folders like downloads etc.

Hi there,

So I'm still struggling to get ROM Manager to recognize my phone. Here are my details:
I have a Samsung Captivate i897. I recently used mini-Kies to maunually update to Gingerbread 2.3.5. I first used your guide here to root it using the kk4 kernel, which CWM doesn't recognize. I went through the steps listed in the guide again and used the Corn Kernel found at "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477", (version: CornKernel_UCKK4_v705.tar), in place of the KK4 stock kernel and flashed it to the phone using Odin. I rebooted the device and went to Applications, found Superuser and confirmed that BusyBox is installed with superuser privileges.

I see the Corn kernel loading page when the phone starts up. Going to Settings > About Phone I've confirmed:
Firmware version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: I897UCKK4
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CORNv705
Build number: GINGERBREAD.UCKK4

I then:
> Re-booted device
> Removed ROM Manager
> Re-booted device
> Re-installed ROM Manager from the Market
> Re-booted device
> Ran ROM Manager
> Pressed Flash ClockwordMod Recovery

But the list it shows me does not include the i897 Captivate:
Google Nexus S
Google Nexus S 4G
Samsung Epic 4G
Samsung GalaxyS i9000

What am I doing wrong? Any help would sure be appreciated.

Thanks!

Allen.

The corn kernal has CWM recovery already installed. The CWM from the market will not work on 2.3.5. There is no app like there used to be, it is all done from recovery. You have to download the rom zip you want and store it in the SD of the phone. Then power the phone off completely, hold both volume buttons and the the power button, release the power button at the att screen, but keep holding the volume buttons. Recovery will boot, select install zip from SD, then select zip, then find the rom zip to flash.

I repeat the app from the market will not work with 2.3.5, don't even try. There will be no icon it has to all be done in recovery mode!

Ah, well that answers that then. How do I back up my current ROM then? I find that I'm reluctant to go ROM adventuring without making some kind of emergency backup in case madness and bricking ensues.

Thanks again!

LOL, I know that feeling! Well you can use nandroid from the recovery screen, it is under back up, Or use Titanium Backup as well. Make sure you read descriptions in the roms thread though, some report bricks using nandroid. Personally I save my contacts as a vcf to my external, pull my pics and ringtones and keep my phone pretty bare so flashing and set up are quick and painless. I also keep updated phone pulls on my pc just in case. I don't worry to much about texts or game data. I also keep a Odin KK4 1 click ready to go back to stock if needed.

Thanks for the quick response. I keep my contacts saved to the SIM, photos on an external SD card, and I'm not really a ringtone nut, so there's now worries there. I recall reading something about nandroid throwing a fit with Samsung phones. I will have to read more on it and get caught up. How does Odin KK4 1 click differ from the steps you mentioned earlier in the guide? I would assume that if it is consolidating the steps taken into 1 click, that there's much less granular control over what is being flashed to the device. Is that correct?

It takes it back to total stock, no root or mods and a repartition of the phone. Just like a fresh update from keiss. I find that if I go back to stock before a flash I have less trouble :)

Geeve

Edit: yeah a 1 click is what it is, no changing components.

It looks like Titanium Back up is pretty highly touted as the way to go to back up the data on the device, though I'm unclear on whether or not it simply saves app data, app settings and system settings, or if it actually grabs and backs up the ROM too. Do you know Titanium's parameters and the limits of its features and functionality? I need to grip a walk and quit staring at this bloody computer screen. I'll check in here once I'm back.

Thanks again for helping me out with getting caught up on all of this.

It does app data, user data, app settings and system settings, it is not a rom image. It is a great program and makes backing up and restore pretty painless. Past that I use the free version to uninstall bloatwate and such. I am really not familiar enough with it to give you a full break down. I have in the past used it to save and backup data, but found keeping my phone bare was just easier. Sorry I couldn't be more help there.

The more I did read though, stay away from nandroid at all cost. They are still working out the kinks in the new version.

You have just made my month! After the last os update with the tethering issue I was about ready to office space my captivate. I had been wanting to root but did not have the reassurance it was going to go smooth. Your tutorial was flawless and you should get paid to write stuff up like that. I'm now bloatware free and finally free of the tether demon that made me hate my Droid.

I don't suppose you have a link for that 1 click do you? I was just searching and scanning around for it, but I appear to be not seeing the tree in the middle of the barren field. -_-

Thanks!

Glad I could help!!! I wish I could get paid to do guides like this :) I have a few more I am going to do over the next month or so. So keep an eye out! If you just hit the thanks button on the guide, that will be payment enough :D

Edit1: Yes, and Yes. Edit 2: I did look in the downloads folder too, lol! I got worried and was like "what the heck?"

I think I may have figured out what happened though, and I apologize for omitting this information: Basically, the phone is on Simple Mobile. Not sure if that has to do with anything.

But the real omitted comment is that when I first booted into recovery, I selected Wipe* (Factory Reset) and let it sit for like 5 minutes....nothing was happening, and I thought the process got stuck, so I pulled the battery (I never had a wipe ever take that long on any other device I've owned)....afterwords, when it rebooted, some app icons said "SD" but when I went to click them, they said "not installed on device", so basically I just went to the market and reinstalled them all (after I reinstalled the market)

I even had to reenter my data settings for Simple Mobile. Otherwise, everything remained the same.

After that, THEN I tried to flash a ROM, and CWM did not see them. Maybe the partial wipe had something to do with it? I didn't even know the phone was still wiping.......5 minutes later?
