Hey guys, just followed the tutorial here and I finally got it to work.

I have been rooting Android devices since the G1 in 2008 (remember that? It was like 20 clicks and commands in terminal).

Anyway, I have had all the great Samsung Galaxy S phones, starting with the Vibrant, then the SGS 4G, SGS II, Skyrocket and now... a Captivate.

As far as I'm concerned, the Captivate is a fantastic "secret deal" in terms of smartphones. I have never seen one until I bought the one I have, this week for $90. It is like new and boy was I impressed. I am using it on Straight Talk, which is another deal in itself.

So I am used to having rooted phones, mainly because I like to install the latest ROMS, and many apps, features, and whatnot can be activated when a device is rooted, etc. (for example, there's a tiny little app for Samsung Galaxy S phones called "Keep the Lights On." It requires root access and super user privileges. What it does is keep the capacitive hard keys lit full time (menu, home, back, search). In other words, they don't go out after two seconds.

I have been hassling with trying to root the phone FOR TWO DAYS! Come to find out that AT&T provided an update to 2.3.5, but it makes rooting the phone more difficult.

The Almighty Google led me to this great thread and I thought my problems were over. Turns out that Odin would not recognize my Captivate. I tried everything. Turning off antivirus, rebooting the PC, using different USB cables and ports, etc.

Then there was a poster in here who said he had the same problem. He tried it on three different computers, no luck for him, Odin would not recognize the connected Captivate, in the correct download mode showing on the device.

His statement got me to thinking, I wonder if it could be that I was using a 64 bit machine! I copied Odin, the Odin ini file, and that tar app. I put those files on a 2009 Lenovo netbook that was running Windows 7 too, but it was a 32 bit machine.

Voil

Hello guys,

I was following the instructions and did it all, but after putting the KK4_stock_kernel.tar i start having problems with my wifi connection. I tried 2 different routers and had the same results. The phone gets stuck on Obtaining IP address. Can anyone please help me?

Well this is 11 months later, but since people are still rooting the Captivate (it is an awesome phone, and this is coming from someone who has had the SGS II Skyrocket), I'll tell what happened to me.

I too had the problem with no WiFi after doing this rooting process. But I'll admit my acting the fool: it was a bonehead error!

In my other post I said that I discovered the reason my open Odin console would not recognize my Captivate (in download mode) was because I was using a 64 bit machine to perform the rooting process. So I went into the bedroom where I have an old Lenovo netbook running Win 7. It is a 32 bit machine. That recognized the Captivate.

Anyway, so I performed the rooting procedure and my Captivate was indeed rooted (yay!), but I could not get WiFi working, no matter what I tried to do.

So before giving up for the day I went into my About screen to see what all I had installed (kernel). That's when I discovered, on double checking this page's install procedure, I FRIGGIN INSTALLED ONLY ONE PACKAGE, NOT BOTH! DOH!. In my defense, I did not have the instructions on the netbook, so I was doing it from memory.

The first time I had installed the I897UCK-...DesignGears tar file. (Apparently that does root the Captivate, but it does not install stock components, such as WiFi?)

On discovering my mistake I performed the entire procedure as if I had not did the first root.

The second time, however, I followed directions and installed KK_stock tar file when I was supposed to.

Fired up the Captivate, I now had WiFi (which as the author noted too, I had to turn it back on.)

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope this helps.

Bonus Comment: Aren't directions a beech.

i usedthis method and my phone did nothing but freeze every time i plugged in the charger or go online ....i was constantly pulling the battery
did i do something wrong?..... i did have to unroot

Damn! You are such a genius!!! I got this S.R.A.I.G.H.T. on first try and everything went smoothly like hot knife through butter. I need to buy you a couple of beers man!

I can't seem to get my phone into download mode... any help?

EDIT: Nevermid, i got it, but now the tar files don't show up on odin... wtf?

EDIT OF EDIT: Got that sorted out too, but just wondering, I'm with rogers, will this still work? I also have the captivate glide, if it makes a difference.

EDIT OF EDIT OF EDIT: **** this is getting annoying. So a post somewhere above me said to run as Admin, so i did, and i get the same problem as he did, where it sticks on <ID:0/003> SetupConnection.. and nothing happens. My download screen isn't the same as in the instructions, mine has the android guy just standing there with a bunch of text at the top. Could my phone not be right for this?

I'd like to thank you GREATLY for this.
I was on 2.2 the did the update and of course lost my old root.
Your guide was very clear and to the point and was extremely simple to follow.

Thank you kindly,

Pikeypete.

what gives?
when i try to load the .tar files my pc will not find them (the folders are empty) why am i getting zIMAGE instead of .tar files?????

The root doesn't work for me.

It flashes fine and displays OK/green in ODIN, but upon rebooting it just keeps showing a bunch of multi-colored static lines and reboots (showing the ATT logo).

Why does it do this and how do I go about fixing it?

My version said "eclair" in the about page, should I be on the latest update (the ATT update failed). I was coming from an ICS rom and had to go back to some odin-flashed version after a botched 4.1.2 upgrade.

After I plugged in the USB cable and the download mode screen appeared on my phone (method 3), Odin fails to recognize my phone. I have checked that my (ATT) Captivate's firmware is 2.3.5.

If it helps, I am using Odin from the top post, and my OS is Win 7.

Any help?

I do hate for my first post to seem like a complaint, but could someone help me? I rooted this following the instructions perfectly and haven't found any problems other than when I hit the market app I get a 404 (it's trying to access the TOS, I think). Phone was stock (freshly upgraded from eclair to gingerbread through mini kies) and factory reset before that. If anyone has a solution to my problem I'd love some help :)
(If I find a fix before someone posts I'll edit...)

Edit: Installed corn kernel and it amazingly let me get google play...
Found cyanogenmod and am gonna flash that, though (Ice cream sammich is <3)

Sorry for being a bother!

Perfectly loaded CM 9 (stable...) <333 Works flawlessly

Hey everyone, first post here :)

First of all, thanks to everyone that collaborate with this awesome guide, great work!

I'm having a little issue and being the noob I am, I'm scare to make any move so I thought about asking for a little help...

I followed the guide here and was able to root my AT&T captive 2.3.5 without any issues. Everything was working fine... for a while.

After rooting, superuser was working fine. As the guide recommended I updated the SU app from the store, and also installed busybox using the smart install thingy it has (didn't mess with the settings it recommended). Lastly, I updated the SU binary to 3.1.1 through the app as it started asking for that.

I believe that either after installing BB or updating the SU binary, something went terribly wrong. What happens now is that any app that requests root permissions either fails to get the SU prompt up or hangs the phone completely. Busybox reports that it couldn't open a shell with root, rootchecker just hang checking and never ends, link2sd and a couple other apps I tried just hang everything completely requiring a battery pull. The superuser app itself hangs if trying to update the su binary again or any other root operation...

Is it possible that either the BB install or SU binary update messed with my root? I was thinking about applying the root process again, but I'm afraid that it might cause issues or even brick the thing, being in its current unstable status... in theory it should just overwrite with the version of su that's inside the patch and be happy, but that's just my theory :)

Anyone experienced this before? Any insights? I was also thinking about applying a CM ROM, in which case it might be better to directly apply corn kernel to also get CWM for recovery mode? Would that be safe to apply on top of this?

Thanks a lot in advance!
