In settings - apps, take a look at the apps that you have and see what size the apps are and what how much data they have.
Moving to sd should be pointless as the bit that moves to sd (fat32 partition) would have been on the ext partition anyway. Shouldn't make any difference.
If you want me to I can talk you through how to reduce your system partition from 250mb to 140mb and your cache from 40mb to 5mb gaining you another 145mb. This will allow most aspects ROMs to run but not sense ROMs.

I was going to use my initiative (always dangerous), & having googled this, the recommendation (as in http://ichristaylor.com/how-to-flash-the-hboot-on-your-htc-desire/)was to flash a new HBOOT; the bravo_alphaspl-oxygenr2.img one for the alpharev site seemed right. I did a nandroid backup, hooked the phone up to fastboot commander again, but it now says 'failed' for all the tests, & that the phone does not have S-OFF or eng-hboot. There are command-line instructions elsewhere, but fastboot commander worked so well before it seemed a shame not to use it.
I've no desire (except I have) to run a sense ROM - the whole point of Oxygen was to cut out all the frilly bits - so changing the partition size seems the way to go.
As far as apps are concerned, there's the stock Google stuff that's there by default, & I've installed Whatsapp and Oruxmaps. That's all. That's why I didn't think I should be running out of room just yet!

Strange. Not sure what to recommend other than trying again. Does the bootloader still have the pink alpharev on it? Boot into fastboot, then connect to pc, then open fastboot commander.
Personally I would recommend the cyanogenmod hboot from alpharev as it will give you more options with other ROMs while giving you considerably more internal space (although not as much as the oxygen r2).
Oxygen, Redux and Redux2 will fit on the oxygen r2 hboot but Mildwild's excellent ROMS require the slightly larger system partition (140mb) of the cyanogenmod hboot.

Use the command line instructions from alpharev.nl to flash the hboot (and do a "fastboot devices" before typing any command which does anything, just to make sure it's communicating properly with the phone). Flashing hboot is not something you want to get wrong, so if fastboot commander is having problems my feeling would be to just type the commands directly rather than use a piece of intermediary software that seems to be struggling with the task.

).Thanks for the advice; apart from anything else, I now know how to check the md5 sum. Success with the flashing, though; humble apologies, I wasn't in fastboot - it was highlighted in the hboot menu, but I hadn't selected it. Once I did, fastboot commander worked fine, & after restoring the backup I've now got 121Mb used in internal storage . . . and 215Mb free. Stuck with the oxygen r2 in the end, but if I do catch the playing with ROMs disease, I'll follow your recommendation of cyanogenmod.

OK, supposing - just supposing, mind - that I wanted to try a different ROM . . . a) which is the Redux2 you referred to, nicka3200? Redux2-based ROMs are mentioned in a number of threads. & b) can I just use Titanium to backup any apps I want to keep, then install from Recovery? I'm never sure what to clear in the way of caches etc.

You generally restore Titanium backups using Titanium Backup, not from recovery, though if you look down the "batch actions" menu there is an option to make a flashable zip from your backups (at least on the paid version, don't know about free).
The original Redux2 was from this XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229003. However the download links there are dead (unsurprising as they are nearly 4 years old). The links for MildWild's ROM based on it still seem to be live (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031467).

Always make a nandroid backup too before changing roms.
OK, thanks both, advice appeciated. Sorry I didn't make myself clearer re Titanium - what I meant was to backup up apps using that, then install the new ROM from 4ext recovery, then restore the apps with Titanium. But yes, a nandroid backup would be a good idea as well.

Well my edited version fits into 70MB /system, but I did that by stripping out stuff that I didn't think I need, which may not be the same things you'd remove. I was using a custom HBOOT to maximise /data space, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't include an apps to SD script (can't remember whether the standard version does, but most ROMs did for the Desire).

Thanks Hadron, & got the PM. Made a start last night just by re-installing Oxygen, which went swimmingly except Google Play is coming up with the 'Invalid download uri' error; managed to download an apk for Titanium, but I ned to get that error sorted. Need to do some proper work first, though . . .
Back up & running properly now. Formatted everything in sight, including sd card, & re-installed. Now about to display my ignorance again. Am I right in thinking that there is no apps to SD script included (I'm still with Oxyegn here, haven't tried the Redux2 ROM in any of its flavours yet) if there's nothing to set in apps/development? Must admit, I assumed it would do it by default. Does that mean that I need an extra app, or is there some command that I've overlooked to set it up?

Have a look in /system/etc/init.d. If there's a script called "10apps2sd" (or similar - I've not used such things for a few years) then it should just work, as long as you have a second (ext3 or ext4) partition on your sd card.
How are you checking that the apps are there? A root-capable file browser would tell you, but the system menus don't: the apps just appear to be "on the phone", and the only real clue is that your internal storage goes down slower (it doesn't appear to be larger).
The statistics on Titanium Backup's front page (down at the bottom) should tell you about your A2SD storage use though, so that's probably the simplest way to tell. I can't remember whether you need to scroll down on the Desire to see this.

OK, thanks. I was wondering whether I was getting a true picture from the system menu; ES file Explorer may come in handy, or maybe I'll just look at Titanium.
I've just reformatted the sd card with a 2Gb first sd-ext (ext-4, rather than ext-3, assuming Oxygen (&Redux2) can cope with ext-4), & skipped the second & swap partitions; the sd contents are on their way back on to the card from a backup.
