PROBLEM:
If your phone is rebooting 3 or 4 (or more) times per day, then that is not normal behavior. Constant rebooting seems to be a common problem with some LG Motion 4G users. There are a variety of solutions to this problem, and currently, these appear to be the causes:

  • Phone is over clocked, or over heating.
  • Deleted a necessary system app.
  • You used the Automated All Bloatware Removal script.
  • Possibly messed up system settings???

STEP 1
:
You may want to backup your contacts and MMS/SMS history with an app like Go Backup Pro (any suggestions for other backup apps are very welcome).

If your phone is rooted, you should unroot your LG Motion 4G phone.

Factory reset your phone. Press the Menu button from the Home screen > System Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset
(Power on your phone holding: Power + Vol Down)

STEP 2:
Now that you have your phone back to a factory fresh state, play with it a little and see if you can get it to spontaneously reboot. If everything seems okay, go to STEP 3.

Otherwise you very likely have a defective phone. Your options:

  • If your phone is still under warranty (1 year manufacturer warranty for MetroPCS), then take it back and they should replace it for free, or a minimal fee.
  • Your CPU may be over heating/misbehaving. Go to the UNDER CLOCKING section of this guide.

STEP 3:
Reinstall your backup app. Restore your contacts, restore your SMS/MMS, and edit all your desired system settings. Test your phone out for a few hours or days. If everything seems okay, go to STEP 4.

Otherwise you likely have a defective phone, but there is a small possibility that there may be a weird settings glitch causing the problem. Your options:

  • Leave us comment saying what Settings you think might be causing the problem, and try going back to STEP 1.
  • If your phone is still under warranty (1 year manufacturer warranty for MetroPCS), then take it back and they should replace it for free, or a minimal fee.
  • Your CPU may be over heating/misbehaving. Go to the UNDER CLOCKING section of this guide.

STEP 4:
Reinstall your favorite apps. Disable any system apps you don't want. Use your phone for a few more hours or days. If everything seems okay, go to STEP 5.

Otherwise you likely have a defective phone, but there is a small possibility that there may be a weird settings or apps causing the problem. Your options:

  • Leave us comment saying what changes you think might be causing the problem, and try going back to STEP 1.
  • If you can demonstrate that your phone is misbehaving and it is still under warranty (1 year manufacturer warranty for MetroPCS), then take it back and they should replace it for free, or a minimal fee.
  • Your CPU may be over heating/misbehaving. Go to the UNDER CLOCKING section of this guide.

STEP 5:
If you reached this point, then your phone should be behaving properly. If your phone was previously rooted, then your problem was likely caused by some modifications you performed while using root.

If you do not wish to root your phone, then you are finished with this guide. End. Cheers.

UNDER CLOCKING:
This section is for people whose phones are randomly rebooting, and you have not yet rooted your phone.

To underclock your phone, you will now need to root your phone. Root your phone following the ROOT YOUR PHONE section. Then, install an app like No-Frills CPU Control. Set your Maximum clock frequency to always run at the lowest setting (check "Apply on boot"). Press the "Apply" button.

If your underclocked phone works well for several hours or days, then your random rebooting was likely a result of over heating CPU. (You should try to have your phone replaced by the manufacturer if you can.) Your phone will probably be able to operate safely around 1.026Ghz. Try to gradually increase the frequency speed on your phone until you find the frequency you are comfortable with.

ROOTING YOUR PHONE:
Click the following link to find the LG Motion 4G root guide.

Be careful about removing any system apps, as they can be known to cause continuous rebooting. A safer solution is to simply disable undesired system apps. If you discover a system app that you believe causes system reboots, please let us know.

Any suggestions for improvements to this guide are welcome, please leave a post. Cheers

Ever since I got this phone, it reboots about once every day or two. Before and after rooting, bloatware removal, no matter what clock settings or anything else, factory reset (through the unbricking guide) done twice for other reasons, no help. I would take it back, but knowing Metro and their ******ed staff it would have to happen in front of them, which it never will because it doesnt happen very often. It doesnt really affect anything so Im not too worried about it, if it gets worse then I can always take it in. It also might be because the power button gets pressed down for a second or two, and then the reset button gets pressed. It also never happens when Im using the phone, Its always I just go to use my phone, and its either in the process of rebooting or I know it has rebooted because some of my apps have reset.

Who knows, maybe a future software update will fix it, or maybe its Im just pressing the buttons. I have noticed that my belly will press the unlock/power button when I bend over or sit down.

I haven't had a problem with the Motion self rebooting.
I'm rooted ,debloated myself, use holo launcher, and do not under clock,
and the os version is still C. I am curious if the different os versions has any adverse affects thou.

@slipkn0t2012
That is great news to hear. I like the script and I hope that it continues to prove to work out well. Perhaps eventually a future version of the script can be developed for use directly on the phone, so that everyone can run it no matter if they run Linux or Windows on their pc.

This guide was mainly made in response to these multiple posts of people with rebooting problems:

Some of them have been solved. If more people have rebooting problems and this thread helps them, then I'm glad I wrote this guide. If I was wrong in writing this guide and no one else has rebooting problems, then that's good news too. :o

So I see it as a potential win either way. Cheers

My wife says that her phone reboots at least once a day from using Facebook.

She is rooted. System apps that she doesn't use are frozen, not removed.

Its not a good idea to have your CPU clocked at 1.5Ghz all the time. ARM processors are not x86 processors. They can maintain that speed for moderate periods of time but were not meant to be kept like that for the entirety of its life. And when it is on full load, you have to watch your temperatures. If your phone is hot to the point where you place it on your cheek and can't keep it there, then you need to stop what you're doing.

I seriously haven't heard of this rebooting issue until I opened this thread up. Nor have I experienced it. Maybe it hasn't been such a widespread problem to have a complaint about. I have:
  1. Rooted my phone
  2. removed most of the Metro Apps, not frozen them
  3. removed alot of other bloatware following the list in this subforum

What do you clock your phone at?
My wife and I haven't changed the CPU settings, it came clocked at 1.5 from the factory.
Do you underclock? Or was this simply a blanket statement to those who are trying to overclock?

My phone also came preloaded with 1.5Ghz clock speed. This appears to be a mistake on behalf of LG, and has caused at least one forum user to experience frequent reboots. (His problem was solved by underclocking)

If your phone is rebooting only once every day or two, I wouldn't say that is too abnormal. All phones seem to occasionally reboot. This guide was mainly meant for those who suffer from excessive rebooting (multiple times per day, or hour). I have edited the OP a bit to help clear that up.

@DrHangman
If your wife were to temporarily unfreeze the stock apps on her phone, we'd be really interested to find out if her phone rebooted less frequently.

Cheers
