Root [guide] unlock with htcdev

I've been looking for it for a week, and it's been down ...

So, maybe I'll ask ... I found these stock ROMs here:

It <<seems>> I have this one:
RUU_Vivo_W_VERIZON_WWE_1.34.605.4_Radio_0.99.01.0225_2_NV_VZW1.92_release_182876_signed.exe

and I'm guessing that this one will get me to 2.3.3, which I don't want to get beyond since if I ever want s-off I think that's what I need:
RUU_Vivo_W_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.18.605.4_Radio_1.09.01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_200325_signed.exe

I'm not 100% on whether that's 2.3.3. Do you know how I can find out? Also, is this the right way to flash a stock ROM: http://www.teamandroid.com/2012/09/02/how-to-update-htc-devices-install-ruu/

I'm assuming that might get me an hboot that'll work at htcdev, without interfering with future attempts at s-off.
 
Also, maybe you can clue me in. Unlocking with htcdev allows me to flash any ROM I want, right? I know I can't flash the radio (which is fine with me); but otherwise, is there any other difference?
 
I'm OK with the Team Android RUU instructions.

I'm impressed that you correctly chose the Vivo_W versions to match your Incredible 2 - you've obviously done your homework, way to go! :)

I can't figure out if that RUU is above 2.3 or not, and you can't open the RUU to see (at least, if you can, it's NOT easy).

No.

So long as the rom is compatible with the bootloader and radios, and doesn't try for some change in your partition layout (VERY rare) then you'll be fine with an HTCdev.com unlock and s-on.
 
I'm glad I got something out of staring at the screen all night. My eyes'r buggin! :)

Weird tho - the three 2.18.605.4 firmwares are all different sizes. The one on that last pdadb.net link is less than half the size of the other two ... :-?

I'll look around some more. I think I want to go with htcdev for now, unless there's no other way. It's all a matter of not knowing the community yet. Until I do, I'm a little nervous about mystery-ware, if you know what I mean!

Thanks man - I'll post back here when I find out more. Maybe you'll let me know if you find out more about revolution.io - just so when I get my bearings and if/when I need it, I know what's up.
 
Androidruu.com has a good reputation. I'd trust them.

Android Police linked to a zip version that you flash from the sd card using the phone's built-in capability.

The exe RUU is bigger because it has the tools and instructions on the pc to ship the zip file (it's actually embedded in the exe) over the usb line.

That last link I posted just for the text, if it's smaller than the other two, the server is corrupted.
 
Got it.

It seems ver. 2.18.605.4 is definitely 2.3.3, as I found here. HBOOT is 0.97 at that ROM version and doesn't reach 0.98 until version 5.10.605.9. So, I should probably be good! Got 4 devices to root, so I better get to it! :)

One thing's not clear at the TeamAndroid link on flashing the RUU: I take it the phone is in hboot (vol dn/power) >> fastboot mode, and then plugged into the computer, correct? Other than the RUU*.exe, do I run anything on the computer end? One place is saying to run `fastboot oem lock`, but I don't have those oem commands.
 
Most people run an RUU to recover a rooted phone gone terribly wrong, or to temporarily leave root behind to get a bootloader/radio firmware update. Those folks are already unlocked, so they have to start out with fastboot oem lock to relock the bootloader first - and then after the RUU completes, they unlock again with the original Unlock_code.bin they got from HTC, restore TWRP, etc etc etc.

That's not your case so you don't care about that.

It's been a while since I've been near this one - is there a reason to not go with the latest firmware?

Only that I was trying to hedge my bets by using htcdev, but keeping the door open for s-off.

The flash went as expected, with your help. Unfortunately, the phone still doesn't recognize "fastboot oem XXX" commands. So I think I'm going to leave it there and take your advice: s-off with revolutionary. (I see the domain is now redirecting to blog.pat.io. Hopefully that'll resolve.)

I tried rumrunner.us & moonshine.io. Neither worked. Docs say they both need htcdev unlock before trying. No word on whether revolutionary is coming back.
 
I did. Chatted with "zanzibar". He said "Thanks", but didn't seem to know if it'd come back. I'm not clear who's actually taking care of the site, but it didn't seem to be him. I've got a couple of questions on XDA up, asking about alternative approaches, but there's not much activity.

Well it looks like I had perfect timing in trying to upgrade my Incredible 2 after it was gathering dust (bad timing with revolutionary being gone). I'd like to use it for wifi, etc, but need to upgrade to ICS to get latest apps. I'm stuck and need guidance on how to get 'free'....

As best as I can remember here was my sequence of events:
1 - I went through the HTCDev process as it looked the most straightforward and easiest. All worked just fine.
2 - After reading more I decided to get to S-OFF, which I found how to get to on xda after having gone through HTDDev process. I downgraded and flashed radio, etc, and all appeared fine.
3 - At this point is where I had problems because revolutionary was done. Not quite knowing what to do I've since figured it might be best to get back to HTCDev process - but I can't now get that to work to get the unlock code because the fastboot oem command doesn't work, etc. I've also had issues with not being able to fully boot (1 out of 10 tries will it actually boot fully) and so I did a factory reset at one point. Not much has changed - still not able to boot fully. When I go in to bootloader - I see:

I've tried flashing recoveries (including ClockworkMod) and pretty much all of those commands fail....

@gobuckiii - The only thing I can suggest is to flash the following firmware from here:

RUU_Vivo_W_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_5.10.605.9_Radio_1.09.01.1111_NV_VZW1.92_release_225831_signed.exe

I think that will get you to HBOOT 0.98.0000. That's still Gingerbread (3.3.4), but it may be updated enough to get htcdev to work (fastboot oem ...). If you do it, let me know if it works, huh? For the moment, I'm holding out in the hope that revolutionary might come back (which need HBOOT 0.97.0000).

If you can update to a rooted ics,you have a good chance of the one v rumrunner working. The Inc 2 is the old partition layout,like the one v.

Hboot .98 is an htcdev compatible hboot. Flash ruu,unlock,install recovery and a stock ics Rom,then run one v rum runner :)

Thanks for the response and help - I'm a little confused as to how to flash that though because mostly I've only seem zip files and not exe files? Do I simply fastboot flash that exe from my hard drive? Or do I have to copy to the sd card (which when I can't get it to boot very often I also can't get to the sd card to copy - but I guess I can use shell commands? - sorry for the rambling, I'm learning along the way here)....I probably won't be able to get to this for a couple of days - but if you can help with these questions too I'll try and keep you posted.
 
Exe files are official HTC RUUs.

Zip files are typically not, they're extracted from an exe or assembled separately and referred to as an RUU.

Volume down + power while powering on, go to FASTBOOT if it doesn't come there - plug in to pc - double click the exe on your Windows PC.

Make sure that you have a good 50% charge before starting.

Follow the on screen instructions.
 
Ok - that worked great so the phone is back working just fine and its showing hboot 0.98....My next step will be to try htcdev unlock and load a recovery and go from there....Hopefully I can try that soon in the next couple of days.

Just wanted to give an update....Was able to get recovery loaded and flash a rom - phone is up and running and so far looks great! Now I have an issue with one app that appears to have problems with 4.2.2 so I'm actually going to try and find a rom greater than that, but I don't anticipate any rom flashing issues anymore. Again - thanks for the help!!
