Guys! Try out GDE homescreen cube! AMAZING!!!

1. Drag to the edge of the screen. Just like the normal home screen.

2. Haven't seen anything for this.

3. Tap the home button.

4. I think this is the way it is designed for now. You can give him a suggestion on changing it in his thread on XDA-Developers.
GDE - Version 0.1 in the market! - xda-developers

Thanks...on moving to another screen, I tried doing that and it didn't work. I'll give it another go.

Found an issue - I have five screens enabled...three had various icons on them, as well as the following widgets:

Counting screens from left to right...

S1: -nothing
S2: 10 icons and Battery Widget
S3: 8 icons and Beautiful Home widget
S4: three icons & Laiks Calendar widget 4x2
S5: nothing

When I added either the Pandora or Slacker widget to screen five, I would get this problem where the home screens would blank temporarily when I moved back and forth between them - all the contents of the screens would disappear and then reappear. Remove the widgets from screen 5 and all would be fine again.

So I must be bumping up against some limit here...but I only have three widgets installed (oh, I also have an app doc on screen 4 w/three icons in it) and then at four widgets it starts messing up. Anyone else seen this?

I see the same with Slacker. Perhaps the widget is using a lot of resources. Not sure. I don't see the issue the MixZing widget though.

Decided to give this a try based on the positive reviews...looks nice, but I'm missing it on a few things:

- How to move an icon/widget from one screen to another (aside from deleting it on one and then adding it to another
As mentioned, drag it to the extreme edge and hold it there, in about 2 seconds it will go to the next screen.

- How to tell which of the five screens I've enabled that I'm on
When you hit your home button on the bottom of the phone, it will take you back to the true home screen of GDE.
Otherwise, its hard to tell unless your wallpaper gives you a clue based on it looking different on the other screens.

I hit my home button and put all the shortcuts and widjets I wanted on that screen.. from there it was easy... as I started building the other pages, I could always hit that home bu
tton and it would take me back to the first "home" page I had built.

- How to get back to the center home screen quickly
Hit the home button on your phone "the one that looks like a little house or up arrow"

Also...when I select a wallpaper w/the cube style, the center of the picture is split down the middle and I can only see 1/2 of it on any screen...any way to get the center of the pic on the center screen (3 of 5) and the edges on the outer two screens on each side?
Havent played with that yet.
One very nice thing - w/5 screens this is smoother in normal mode than the native home screen is with 3 screens!
I find that even cube is smooth now and it takes the most graphic power from the processor since it resizes everything and moves it back as it moves from page to page.

I'm loving this. But, I am getting force closes every couple days. No big deal. it fires right up. usually associated with placing and removing from the multimedia dock and when turning the phone on.

I was getting the same thing "every time" I turned the phone back on.. yet the app seemed to work normal.

After the last update yesterday "22nd" I no longer get that.

OK, looks like it is time to check out my first app that is paid for. I suppose I have a lot of time on my hand as it is the holidays here, but I am getting sick and tired of apps fore closing (and I suspect that some of it has to do with the numerous apps I have installed and uninstalled.

I remember seeing the clear cache setting / option somewhere in the settings - will this help with FCs? I usually get one from SportsTap (odd, since it came installed with the OS) and one or two others, but it is not nearly as bad as when I had a previous version of Panda installed.

Also, thanks for all the folks that mentioned that there is a 24 hour return policy - I did not know about it (and hence showed my ignorance in another thread).

I am off to try this out.

A couple of things I have gleaned from this thread:

  1. Remove widgets from the old home screen if you plan on using them in GDE
  2. Application tab is for shortcuts
  3. The newer updates allow use of the cube without hindering performance
  4. Reboot

Anything else?

(The above is supposed to be an ordered list, but it is not placing the numbers in front of each listing....)

I LOVE this app, but I do get a force close any time I change the wallpaper, and when it comes out of the multimedia dock. I hope they update it soon to correct these issues.

I have wallswitch running (auto change wallpaper every x minutes - you set the interval) and haven't had any force closes w/it running.

I have had the duplicate icon issue - icons in my app list were duplicated/triplicated en masse..rebooted and it was OK again.

Are you running 960X480 pics with it or some other resoulution?

Alas, I cannot try GDE. Since the price is in Euros, and I have an Amex, Google Checkout won't let me buy it.

Not that I'm aware of - I'll check and confirm, but most were created specifically for the Droid.

OK - yes I am. :)

Looks like all of them are 960x854, except one that is 1024x768...the 960x854 ones were downloaded from a Droid wallpaper thread, I assumed they were properly sized for the Droid.

Edit: I replaced the 1024x768 wallpaper w/a 960x854 version of the same image, so I'm all "clean" now in terms of wp resolution. I'll see if that affects anything...

Seems there is an app that allows you to buy anyway... I can't remember the name but its something like "marketplace" or something.... see what you can find.

Has anyone noticed apps continuously running in the background with this home screen app?

Maybe it's just me, but every so often when I use my task manager to see whats running my alarm clock, twidroid, facebook etc. Are all running. Even without me having opened them in the past little bit.

It's odd.

Facebook never runs for me unless I purposely activate it. I don't have twitter and the only thing I find running on their on are corporate calendar, messaging, and settings....seems corporate calendar restarts even after tuning off its service.

I have it set to ignore Gmail. alarmclock handcent sms and voice dialer.

But none of this changed after installing GDE.

I'll look for it in a minute. I almost fscked my phone by trying the EVRC vs EVRC-B settings....took me a long time to get back into the programming mode to change it back.

It's rebooting now....

I'd love them to add a application dock widget that showed your 10 most used applications. Maybe he'll add it as an option later on. Anyone know if the developer has a website?

Is there a way to make GDE automatically rotate to landscape mode when you turn the phone sideways without opening the keyboard the way pandahome and dxtop do? That is my favorite feature and really the only reason I want a different home application other than default. I couldn't find a way to do this with GDE, so I uninstalled it. I am using DXtop right now because it automatically rotates, but it seems pretty slow compared to what GDE was. Pandahome seemed to unstable.

Any answer to this yet? Can GDE automatically rotate?

Yes, go into Desktop Setting in GDE, click Enable sensor-based rotation.

Works just fine.

Wow!.. too trippy!.. I didn't catch that setting.. it even moves all your icons around so I guess you have to decide with format you want then to be in "unless it remembers"...opps.. just tested it.. it doesn't remember.. but I'm sure thats an easy fix for the future.

so for now.. decide which format you want to use your phone "landscape or upright" and adjust your icons accordingly.

I plan on using mine upright.. the other apps still can go to landscape when they want.. like the browser, google sky etc.

Searched for Market Maker, market maker, Marketmaker - no go.

I doubt it will be in Googles Marketplace on your phone... I'm guessing it will be off the internet.
Try another search engine besides Google too.

Too bad I can't remember where I read that.

If you are an international purchaser (outside of the United States) look at the help button at the bottom of the Android Market home page and then click on 'Paid App Availability' for a list of countries that can purchase the applications with currency conversion. More countries are added all the time.

I'm absolutely loving this home app as well. Just wanted to throw my two cents in:

One big annoying issue for me:

On the menu button, I have it most of the time set to applications since thats what I'm using most of the time, however, in the times I want to go back to settings, the back button at the top right of the screen is absolutely horrible, I hit it correctly maybe 1/10 times. And i really focus and try to. It's with any theme I've used, so I assume its GDE itself. Not a big deal, right now i have a shortcut to system settings, but going into the GDE settings are a little annoying (though AnyCut might be able to make a shortcut for this, I'll check later)

Edit: As I was going in to open something I stumbled on the fact that the back dedicated key goes back in menus as well, oops!

Two tips:

Ive heard of other people getting the transitions turning into just black screens (like cube being just black transitions, instead of a rotating cube) I feel like the updates have fixed this a lot. However, if something like this (or other glitchy things) are happening. Instead of rebooting the phone, you can go into Desktop settings in the GDE main menu, and at the bottom under all the preferences, there is restart GDE so that the changes take effect. That always gets it running for me.

Also, on that page, there is a Choose main screen. I set my home up before i realized it wasn't the true home (i hit the home twice and it brings me to a widget page) so I changed my home to screen 2, and now when i hit home while i'm on any screen. it brings me to my home!

Have fun!

Dxtop works perfectly in landscape and portrait auto with no adjustment by the user
