Help h.264?

Does anyone know what's up with shoddy h.264 playback on the xoom? I have some movies that I converted using Freemake using the android preset with h.264. They won't play. I've even converted some youtube lectures for my college classes that are 360p, and they don't work either. If I use the mpeg4 codec with the android preset it works fine.

What player are you using to watch them? Have you tried MoboPlayer? Also, DVDCatalyst is a well regarded video converter with tested output settings for the Xoom.

I'm just trying to use the default gallery player. I can sometimes get them to play in Rockplayer, but I really want to use the default gallery player using the advertised supported codecs. As for high profile versus low profile, Freemake doesn't allow that fine of control.

Call me crazy, but I just feel like the codec support should work as advertised. I'm going to be returning my Xoom as soon as Costco gets either the Eee Pad Transformer or the Acer Iconia A500, whichever comes first. It'll be interesting to see if the codec issue is Xoom related, or if Google needs to fix glitches in Honeycomb. Either way, the Xoom, Iconia, and Eee Pad are only interim solutions until the Galaxy Tab 8.9 comes out. That's my final tablet destination. Hopefully Samsung adds divx and xvid support like they did for the original Tab.

Check out this thread from page 59. talks about the limitations that are also being found on the Asus transformer regarding video playback. Looks like it might be a Tegra2/Honeycomb problem not just Xoom.

Well here's hoping it can be fixed with a software update. I've converted lectures for school using freemake and they're only 240p or 360p most of the time. They won't even play but they play on my evo just fine.

So you still haven't tried Moboplayer? Isn't that sort of the point of Android? Not being locked into what Apple thinks SHOULD be adequate. I probably sound rude, but I would definitely try Mobo. I can't guarantee it'll work, but its enhanced controls alone make it definitely worth a shot.

Take it or leave it, just my opinion.

Some of the videos that won't play in the gallery app will play with rockplayer. So I have a solution, but I want to use the gallery app. I like its thumbnail view and I think it looks slick. Is it so much to ask that the Xoom work "as advertised"?

BTW, tried Moboplayer. Same problem. Seems nicer than rockplayer though so thanks for the suggestion. But still not a total solution.
